Dilutions and modifiers act on the base to change the colour of the coat.
Most dilutions shown on chestnut - click on shade names for other bases.
Dilutions shown on bay similarly affect wild bay and extended agouti.

Markings appear on top of the base coat and any dilutions affecting it.
Somatic acts by turning off a gene in a centralized location.
Brindle is typically a result of chimeric or, less commonly, somatic.

Shades of coats have very subjective names.
These are some more common monikers, but they may vary in real world use.
It's usually safer to avoid shades in a phenotype so there's no confusion.

G R E Ysteel | mulberry | roseSteel typically prefers to grey on black.
Mulberry typically refers to grey on bay.
Rose typically refers to grey on chestnut.
Grey monikers are one of the most interchangeable.
Steel can refer to grey on any dark base.
Rose can refer to an early grey on chestnut/bay, mulberry a more progressed grey.

Some genes can only express is other genes also express.
Horses may carry these genes and pass them to offspring
even if the required gene is not present.
