Toto watched as the Skwovet gave Kani an Oran Berry. She smiled and was about to say something to the wild Pokémon when another appeared from the bushes. "Who's this? Another friend?" She leans forward to take a closer look, when it took the Oran Berry from the Skwovet, and started attacking it! Too shocked to do much, Toto stood there for a second before calling Kani to her side. She couldn't let this injustice pass, she would battle the intruder!

You've been waiting for this moment. You're standing outside the lab, waiting for the doors to unlock. There are some other kids with you, so you assume they're getting their first pokemon as well. Finally, the doors open, the professor standing there welcomingly. "Welcome! You all are up early, haha. Well, anyway, inside, everyone" He beckons with his hand for everyone to come inside and almost everyone immediately rushes to the door, you wait a bit until the crowd's gone and finally, you enter. That's when you spot them, the unassuming Litten minding it's own business, it looked just as ordinary every other litten, but the way it was just sitting alone made you walk over and pick it up.

At first, Litten's fur seems to raise, but after petting it, it calms down and relaxes in your arms. The professor sees you with the Litten and walks over, smiling. "Is this your choice? Ah, great choice! Litten is a strong fire type, a great starter." The Litten seems to be getting a little restless and the professor laughs. "Ah yes, you both probably want to start your adventure already, well, here's infinite pokeballs and a pokedex. Your pokedex should have Litten in it already, how about you take a look?" You look at your pokedex, after reading the moves your Litten knows, you wave goodbye to the professor to let your adventure begin!

You find yourself at the edge of town, staring into the tall grass. Of course, you aren't alone, you're with the professor, a friend of your mother's who wants you to learn how to catch a pokemon. "Alright, Tem, tell me if you see anything." You watch the grass closely, and before you could react, you were bonked on the nose with a stick. You manage to yell out something but the professor seems to be already on the hunt for the stick that hit you. When he finds it, however, you find it's attached to a cheeky Grookey, who seems to love the idea that it was this genius prank that they pulled. "Oh, a Grookey, that's... interesting. You don't see then down here alot." He put the pokemon down and the professor lets out a Farfetch'd and after watching an exciting battle. He faces you and gives you a pokeball. You look at the hyper Grookey. "Just one, strong throw." The professor instructs, you do, and you catch it. The professor grabs the ball off of the ground and smiles warmly. "That was great, Tem! How about I heal this little guy up and they can be your first pokemon?"

After the Grookey was healed, you receive a pokedex and unlimited pokeballs. You let out your new pokemon and they chirp at you, the pokemon has calmed down, what a relief. You wave goodbye to the professor and look out across the patches of tall grass and the sound of overlapping pokemon cries fills your ears. It's time for your adventure to begin.

Tem watched the little grass monkey Pokemon as the professor offered it to them, tilting their head like a confused Growlithe as they accepted the Pokeball. Upon freeing the starter from its captivity, the teenager crouched down to get at eye level with the impish Pokemon. As it were, the Grookey stared directly into Tem's eyes - an act of curiosity that struck Tem as an act of aggression, initially, and the trainer flinched slightly (much to the Grookey's misfortune).

Tem stood, looking at the professor and nodding as he spoke. When asked about a name, Tem glanced back down at the Grookey that now huddled close to their foot. "Hmm... I want to name him Mochi," they said simply, reaching down to gently pat Mochi's head. The Grookey cooed in delight, pawing at Tem's hand, and at that, a smile threatened the corners of Tem's lips. "Yeah... Mochi."

Tem waved goodbye to the professor and started off with their new partner Pokemon, heading down the narrow path as they watched Mochi walk alongside them with such a childlike wonder about the world. It was admirable, to say the least - but now came the decision-making process of having a Pokemon: where would they go next?

The teenager pondered this for a solid four minutes, seemingly ignoring how concerned Mochi looked at their unresponsiveness. Finally, Tem snapped their fingers in realization. Now that they had a Pokemon, they could head to the beach without their mom getting upset that they didn't have anything to protect them! Barely even processing the fact that Mochi couldn't read minds, Tem simply said, "To the beach!" and started that way, their little grass monkey trailing behind them excitedly.

"Great job!" Kailani cheers as the Tackle connects. Oshawott and Caterpie are both so small; the spar is nothing like the league battles she watches on television. Even the trainer battles on the beach are thrice as entertaining!

...but if the butterflies in Kailani's stomach are anything to go by, then this battle is equally exciting in its own way. This is Kailani's first battle with her starter; her first battle ever—maybe Oshawott's first, too. Though they're nowhere near champion level, they'll get there eventually, just likes waves traveling the entire sea before collapsing onto the beach.

Wait—'just like waves'? Now that's a thought.

"Tackle again!" Kailani commands as Oshawott shakes off the second string shot. Her grin couldn't be wider when the otter mutters an affirmative and charges.nalu=wave;koa/ako=warrior/nalu(ako)?
