Sonja bolted straight at the brawny hangman, who had now spread his arms wide to both side. She picked up speed at the last second and dodged to the left, ducking into a roll and hitting the ground underneath his arm. She was up in a flash, having dived through the gap, and it didn't take much to vault the low wooden fence around the yard. She was gone, then, vanished through her hidden trapdoor into the underground lair she had inhabited for so many years.
In the crowd, Indigo watched as Sonja made her daring escape, noting the excellent duck-and-roll maneuver. I'd never be able to do that, she thought. Not agile enough. But the legendary Sabre certainly can.
It took all of Melody's will not to cheer and clap for Sonja's escape, but she did turn to Rodney and hug him around the neck, giving him a kiss on the cheek as she did so.
[The image of this is my head is so freaking adorable, because they're both, what, ten years old or so?]
Liam watched from the back of the crowd, not coming forwards when Sonja began to run. He was the blacksmith in town, and respected, so he didn't have to wear a disguise.
Sonja closed the trapdoor behind her and leaned against the wall, breathing hard. She was alive! Alive. It was a glorious word, a glorious feeling. She laughed, but the laugh turned into a hacking cough as she doubled over in pain, hand pressed to the bandages over her ribs. It came away bloody, and the bandages were soaked through. She gasped, head spinning, feeling dizzy. She dropped to one knee, then toppled, bleeding heavily.
