the chill of fall is beginning to set in the mountains, duskstar can tell the first snow of the season is already approaching. she slips silently from her den into the empty clan clearing, pausing to mull over her clan's future. she imagines the clearing during a bright solstice week, free of snow, grass sprouting from the cracks between the rocks. kits tumble over each other, their mothers watching them from the shade. warrior in assorted patrols come in and out of the camp, abundant with food, moss for the healer, and gifts for their kin. their borders are safe - duskstar takes a deep breath in and expects a rush of clean, summer air, but is met with the cold, sharpness of the fall. there is no one around, for now. for now, it is time to stockpile, hunt, and secure her territory. others would be here soon - seeking refuge from the cold of fall and shelter from the old way of life. from her old clan. this past summer, the way it ended, bathed in flame. she saw many of her old clanmates scatter through the forest, some towards the mountains - the way she went - others towards the river, in search of a crossing. in search of a better life. as the summer fades, they'll be looking for leadership - guaranteed safety. the leader knew she had to be ready to offer that.

she pads silently, determinedly, from the camp, set on securing the area, and well, finding dinner.

{sunstar's patrol encounters a rather hungry-looking mountain lion. it's eyes are filled with ruthless predation, and it wastes no time snatching up bumblespot in its jaws. sunstar tries to save his clanmate, but the mountain lion is not alone. a younger lion, presumably the cub of the larger, swipes sunstar away. he loses one life and the two lions sprint away, crunching at bumblespot as they flee. the poor cat is never seen again}

The unexpected death of Bumblespot sends Arroyoclan into a state of shock. Heronpaw is especially distraught at the death of his parent, and refuses to train as he mourns. Rookstorm forbids patrols to enter that part of the territory for several moons until the clan can be sure the threat has passed.

Sunstar elects not to tell most of the clan that he also lost a life, neglecting to inform even Rookstorm or Cougarclaw. In the end, only he, Creekleap, and Sagewhisker know he lost a life during the attack. Cougarclaw, ever insightful, knows he isn't telling her something, but refrains from pressing him on it.

Poppypounce is grieving over the death of her clanmate and concerned by Heronpaw's distressed. To her relief, however, Garterheart gives birth to three healthy kits and everything goes smoothly. The couple, as well as the rest of the clan, finally have something positive to focus on despite the stress and tragedy.

Mariposastep is realizing that she's caught feelings for Rookstorm and wants to be more than friends, but has no idea how to tell him, or even if she feels the same. She busies herself with helping Garterheart and Poppypounce care for their kits, and finds that she enjoys the company of the two mollies. After moons, she's finally truly fitting in.

--A violent storm shakes ChaosClan territory, but through The Fallen's warnings, the clan makes it out alright and shelters everyone in the warehouse.
--Pikaleaf is distraught about the loss of both Haretuft and Rabbitfuzz, gone too soon. Sunflicker takes it upon himself to comfort the younger cat, taking his own load off of his chest regarding the loss of his own family. Skatetooth is eavesdropping, almost accidentally, and seeks out Sunflicker afterwards, a strange feeling of wanting to comfort the other tom crossing over him.
--Skuafeather goes to find Licoricetooth and Lotuskit, hoping to rekindle a sisterly relationship with Licoricetooth. The prickly she-cat needs someone in her life, after all... At first, Licoricetooth is resistant to Skuafeather's attempts, but softens up after Lotuskit reflects on how much she enjoys being around Skuafeather.
--Ivyshine and Charclaw spend a lot of time together, their bond growing stronger every day. The same cannot be said for Blackbirdshriek and Mockingbirdcry, who are still hostile towards each other, making Mockingbirdcry's position feel very stressful for the young tom.
