Click-through story functional notes:
- In some parts, you may need to click on the screen to continue to the next part. It's not always super obvious ^^'
- the story cycles through different types of interactive sections. There are some static image parts to read, animated text/image parts, game-like point-and-click functioning parts, etc. For the most part, it should be easy to get through~
- there's a "search and click" part where, to progress, you need to find the right thing to click on. There's a hint provided as to what you're looking for shortly before the part; "Find the guiding eye".
- if you have any trouble with the file, please let me know.
Click-through story details: [SPOILERS]
There are some details that might help make certain aspects of the story more understandable, but I suggest giving it a playthrough before reading this as this is definitely spoiler territory. I'll organize it as a Q&A.
Q: Why are most of the NPCs faceless/blank, and what are "Nons"?
A: I've lovingly nicknamed the blank NPCs "Non"s because of their particular role. They're meant to be lost figures; characters that lost their shape and physical identity as the main character (Dani) explores her world and follows a path put in place for her. In the beginning of the story, there's a static image titled "SitAndPonder.png" which basically says something along the lines of, "What if something abnormal in this world suddenly became normal?" This is meant to hint at the fact that Nons are not normal or natural (as anyone could easily see), but Dani doesn't notice this herself as she interacts with them. To her, they're complete as they are.
Q: Why are some scenes distorted?
A: As revealed in the end, Dani is manipulated throughout the story - made to complete different actions and led closer and closer to the end. The distortions are meant to be a side-affect of this, and meant to highlight the power that distorts fate.
Q: Why does the lab look the same during the flashback to decades before, when Dani finally gets to it?
A: The entity that entraps Foram Vencic makes a comment along the lines of, "no one will come in here unless I allow it" at one point in conversation with Foram. They also reveal that they have a unique sense of time and the cycle of rebirth. These both hint at the idea that the space is being preserved throughout time - kept the same until the day "Tasha" returns.
Q: Are "Tasha" and "Dani" the same kalon?
A: Short answer, no. Long answer, Dani has a similar personality to Tasha and a mark on her soul from her previous life as Tasha, but she lives a different life, has had different experiences and expresses different emotions... differently. When she sees the history she previously had with Foram as Tasha, she becomes aware that her soul was one from rebirth. However, she doesn't remember the entirety of Tasha's life, nor does she take on new characteristics - it's Foram's delusion that Dani wants anything to do with him, or that she retained any feelings toward him from her previous life.
Q: In the journal, some notes contradict one another. How can you tell Foram's real motive?
A: The journal is meant to show Foram's overwhelming, conflicting feelings about the man he worked for and the project Eternity. He flip flops between resentment and determination. Tasha's certainty and calm demeanor in the flashback sets him on track, and gives him new hope in Eternity... only to end with a failure yet again.
Q: What kind of creature is the blue stuffed animal supposed to be?
A: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Q: Why is there only one answer you can give to Foram at the end?
A: Throughout the story, Dani has less and less control over her situation. The entity's interference tore apart her memories of others, compelled her to act in ways unlike herself to find answers and eventually led her to a place she didn't even know existed previously. By the end, she's locked into the grip of said entity, and can't find the strength to respond with anything other than "yes"... and so, she becomes entrapped just like Foram...
...that's not to say that the story can only end there, however.
Q: There's a "To be continued...?" at the end. How exactly do things change for Dani at that point?
A: Despite a grim closing to the story, there's hope for the MC. As is revealed in the flashback, there are creatures who go to the beyond after death, and there are those who enter the cycle of rebirth. Dani is revealed to be a creature that follows the cycle of rebirth, with Tasha's life being a past life of Dani's. Her unique place in the world is something that may come into play, as a disappearance of a cycling vessel could cause a rift in the spiritual essence or base of the world. The story may continue, but it's currently unwritten.
Hidden stuff: [SPOILERS]
There are some "Easter-eggs" or otherwise hidden extra things / funnies.
1. In the internet route, the URL bar at the top of the web interface changes to say different things in distorted lettering. If you look closely, they are readable: "https : / / turnbackturnbackturnback . net / please", "I didn't do it", "It was a terrible mistake", "I will repent until the day I die"
2. Also in the internet route, there's a symbol for the browser company ("Ghostly Rat") that's just a small rat's face, but if you look at that symbol after reaching the end of the glitching articles, it turns into an eye.
3. In the "Meet [blank]" route, the picture on the wall has a hidden eye.
4. In the library route, there's a poster in the back of the scene with a kalon that made a book fort. It says "No book forts" and has a little arrow towards the mischievous kalon that says "don't do this"
5. There are 2 hallway scenes that auto-show / fade in the town hall. The second one has a portrait where the face of the character is blacked out.
6. The mysterious note that's in "Dani's handwriting" is actually my handwriting.... with a mouse / slowed pen speed. It's still hard to read. Sorry.
