━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ( beg me for forgiveness )
indentthe sound of paws whispered through the coarse grass that covered the empty field. the group of cats moved as one, low to the ground, through the cover of shadows. only the moon overhead sent silvered light to pepper the ground, dappling the patrol's fur. the lead cat paused when the wind stirred, carrying their scent across to the other side of the clearing. the rest of the patrol stopped in their tracks, and they waited in complete silence as the leader stood, their eyes scanning the tree-line for even the slightest movement. the wind combed through their fur, ruffling their whiskers. the youngest cat in the patrol dug his claws into the soft ground, and a pair of cats in the middle of the group leaned against one another, as if for solace.
indentwhen the a long moment had passed without the leader's signal, a massive, scarred molly dared to step forward to the leader's side. the rest of the patrol held their breath and waited.
indent"i have a feeling," the leader said to the scarred molly, who didn't take her eyes from the trees. "it's not a good feeling."
indent"we shouldn't stay here," she whispered back. her age showed in her scars and the rasp of her voice, but her strength remained in her wide-set shoulders and unblinking amber eyes. "we shouldn't stay in the open like this."
indenther thoughts went to the camp they left behind. the omen their healer received was terrifying, to say the least. the healer told their leader that they had to advance on daybreak if they had any chance of ensuring their own survival. and duskstar - they had always believed all that was promised by the spirits and their healer. duskstar was a good leader, they always had been, but they were also suspicious and too willing to follow each and every word that came from their healer's mouth. eventide's deputy, the scarred molly, belladonnascar, had always been more critical. still, there was no questioning when duskstar decided the time had come according to the spirits. with that, eventide gathered every battle-ready cat, from the most seasoned warrior to the youngest apprentice fresh out of the nursery, and they made their way to the border.
indent"the spirits want us here. they will guide us safe passage, and we will win this war," duskstar said, though belladonnascar couldn't be sure if they were telling her, or pacifying their own doubts. but belladonnascar knew better than the question duskstar, and she followed when they led forward.
indentlater, the queens and elders would do their best to protect the camp from daybreak invaders. by morning, the sky bled red, as the legend went. day claimed the night, and eventide fell into distant memory for moons, along with the war that had claimed the land for so many moons.
indentwhat few knew, however, was that duskstar's pregnant daughter lived that day, ushered away from the fighting by the elders and other queens. she ran and ran until her paws bled, and she ran further until, at last, she gave birth to a single kit while finding refuge near an abandoned twoleg den. duskstar's daughter would tell her kit all that had taken place. she told her kit about how brave belladonnascar and duskstar led eventide in the middle of the night, and how the daybreak warriors clawed through the camp's boundaries.
indentall of the stories festered in the kit's mind, and the kit had visions of a long future ahead. they dreamed of reclaiming their ancestral homeland in the thick forest. with each day, the kit trained under their mother's guidance, learning the ways of eventide. then, over their mother's grave, the kit, then, a full-grown cat, promised that eventide would rise again. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
indenteventide is a clan born out of war, as they find themselves constantly at odds with a clan called daybreak. seasons earlier, eventide was almost entirely wiped away by daybreak in what signaled the end of the generations-long war. as such, eventide cats constantly struggle for survival and want nothing more than to protect their own.
indentthe cats of eventide live in a dense forest, and they train from a very young age to move swiftly through the trees, using shade and landscape to their advantage. unlike their daybreak counterparts, who live on an expansive moorland, eventide cats prefer to hunt and fight at night, where they are able to move swiftly and quietly through the shadows. young apprentices are taught a wide array of signals and gestures that allow for silent communication, and they must learn to sharpen their eyes and wits. when the clan as constantly fighting with daybreak, eventide cats must be able to act quickly.
indenteventide cats believe that they must put their clan first, above all else. a cat who is found to be disloyal is at extreme risk of exile. rules are treated as law in eventide, and any step out of place is considered a threat towards the safety of the entire clan. they are also very superstitious cats, and the healer doubles as the main source of communication with the spirits. some may argue that the healer has more power in the clan than the leader.
indenteventide subscribes to traditional naming and clan ranks, with the exception of medicine cats (med cats - healers).
indentpredators include foxes and badgers, and eventide prey consists primarily of mice, squirrels, fish, and songbirds. however, the biggest threat to eventide is daybreak, as patrols are often attacked along the border. the day and night are constantly at war with one another.

xindenttwilightfur had never been so terrified in her life as she ran. her paw pads were rubbed raw, cut from the ground rushing up to meet her, and she stumbled, her shoulder colliding with one of the elders' flanks, but no one said anything. the silence was what terrified twilightfur, pushing her to the near brink of hysteria. perhaps if they had been able to offer even a single word of comfort to one another, the queen might have been able to forget the terror that seized her. but they had to be quiet, they couldn't allow themselves to be caught.
indentthough the elders were old and twilightfur was heavily pregnant, they had the advantage of training as eventide warriors. they had been trained their entire lives to know how to move through the shadows of nightfall and walk without making a noise. they knew how to live and survive in total darkness, and there was a deep satisfaction that, through all else, daybreak warriors were clumsy and foolish at night. as long as they moved quickly and quietly, then they would be able to escape. it wasn't much, and the odds were stacked high against twilightfur and her companions, but it would have to be enough. it was a chance, and twilightfur would take it.
indentshe couldn't make out the familiar shapes of her clanmates, nor could she hear their pawsteps, but she knew that they were close. there was the slightest ripple in the shadows as the group moved, and they fell completely still when a twig cracked. daybreak warriors were close, closer than twilightfur had initially hoped, and they brought with them the sickly smell of blood.
indentit was too much to hope that duskstar had survived their ambush on daybreak. duskstar had been so sure, so certain that this battle would be the final, decisive blow that they needed to push daybreak away. finally, duskstar had told their daughter, the border would be secure and the war would be over. finally, they told twilightfur, no one would have to worry anymore. twilightfur took their word with hope, grasping onto the dream that her future kits would have a safe home to grow up, free from bloodshed once and for all. duskstar was growing older, as was their deputy, belladonascar. they wanted to be the ones to see it through and to begin repairs for the generations of damage that left eventide living in fear of sunshine and open skies. duskstar said that eventide had been through too much bloodshed, even beyond living memory, and it was time for the clan to know what it was like to live. twilightfur hoped that, for the sake of her kits, that it would be true. it would have to be true.
indentthe warriors and apprentices had gathered togther, rallied with confidence that eventide was stronger and more well-fed than it had been in moons. they believed daybreak was weak from a harsh season on the moorland and the tell-tale scent of illness that wafted across the border and into eventide's dense trees. this was their chance, the clan believed, as they went out, wishing good-bye to twilightfur and the elders. even though it was certain to be a bloody battle, in which not everyone would return, they were expected to win. it was a gamble, but duskstar believed that it would pay off, and eventide's future would be secure.
indentbut hours passed, and twilightfur stayed up. in the distance, through the trees and the thick canopy of the nursery, she thought she could hear the howls of warriors fighting. when the night went still, a coldness gripped her chest and squeezed until she thought she might burst. in the camp's clearing, the elders had gathered together, whispering quietly to one another as twilightfur weaved among them. they murmured that the warriors should have returned already, that there should have been some sign of victory. one elder believed that duskstar and belladonascar had been killed, another wondered if the leaders might be creating a treaty, or that daybreak had surrendered and was being chased away from the forest and moorland. time continued to pass as the night deepened, and there was nothing. and then the forest exploded around the remaining eventide cats.
indentthey ran and ran through the darkness, using the night's cover to their last advantage. the daybreak warriors chased them through brambles and ferns, tripping over branches while the eventide cats stuck to the shadows and glided over and through the thick forest. and then they broke through the tree line, stumbling and ambling in their sprint to get far away, beyond daybreak's reach. their ran as far as their paws carried them, and they lost several of their own along the way, several of the elders had been injured in the attack, others too old or simply unable to run and keep up with twilightfur and her companions. they tried - but daybreak was faster and stronger, and it was a miracle that twilightfur and several of the other elders managed to make it to safety. perhaps the daybreak warriors thought they had captured all of the survivors, or maybe they decided that a single queen and elders were no threat to their numbers and strength.
indentthe world beyond eventide's borders was a mystery to twilightfur, who had never ventured beyond their land before. high above, the open sky was expansive, shining with cold, distant stars. if starclan had any qualms of the night's events, their warrior ancestors didn't choose to show it. around the lone queen, the clan's elders wheezed with the effort of their escape and they huddled in silence until dawn began to paint the horizon. in the distance, twilightfur thought that she could still see the dark shape of eventide's trees that made their home, but she knew that they were too far, and their home was no longer welcoming.
indent"it's gone," one of the elders murmured beside her. one of the other elders was lying on his side, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps while another tried to tend to a long scratch on his flank, his fur matted with dried blood. in daylight, their haggard faces were drawn and gruesome, and their defeat was placed into sharp focus. "we're all that's left," the elder said when no one answered. twilightfur looked for any signs of dismay or horror on their faces, but there was only dejection, regret and, perhaps, grim acceptance. when the warriors left to attack daybreak, they knew that not everyone would return. they had grown numb to the war and the price that the clan had to pay for their own survival. these elderly cats knew that their own kits might not survive the night, though, surely, no one could have thought that the rest of the clan would have been wiped away. their defeat was too quick, too assured, and there was nothing they could do but try to stop their bleeding, lick their wounds, and wait for their own deaths. many of the elders were nearing the end as it was, twilightfur knew, and she felt cold with her own realizations that she would be the last and only survivor of this attack.
indenteven if daybreak hadn't killed every cat, the elders were sure to pass away without their medicine cats, without the warriors to keep them fed and safe from predators.only twilightfur, and twilightfur alone, had the chance to carry on, if she survived her kitting without the clan's medicine cats and safety. she had never wandered beyond the thick pine forest, and her heart ached to return, but there was nothing to return to. duskstar was dead, as were her friends, her mate, anyone who had ever meant anything to her was dead. all she had was her own instinct and training, her weary paws, and the kits in her belly. her kits would be the last descendents of eventide, and she would have to survive for them, to be able to teach her kits about the great clan that had risked everything and lost all they had. she would be the last thread to the clan, and she would have to survive so that, maybe, one of her kits would have the strength to return to the forest. she hoped, by the grace of the dying stars, that this was not the end.
indentand it wasn't the end, not even close.
indentthunder's ginger and white fur stirred in the breeze as he stood on the edge of something great as he stared down into the dense treeline of a pine forest he had only ever dreamed of. twilightfur had been true to her promise of seasons earlier, telling her only kit every story that she could think of, recalling each and every memory of eventide's greatness, from the quiet nights in the forest, with only the deep shadows and the distant hoot of an owl to show that there was any life left in the still nights, to the feeling of waking up after a midday nap to the sounds of duskstar's - thunder's grand-parent - giving orders to the warriors while kits tumbled out from the nursery, caught up in their play as their mothers watched. the stoies had been ingrained so deeply in thunder's thoughts from the moment he was born, so crucial, especially in the wake of twilightfur's death, that the moment felt like a boulder resting upon his shoulders.
indentas thunder stood over his mother, watching as she braced her shoulders with the last of her strength, she made him promise that he would follow her words. she told him to follow the horizon until he found eventide's home. even after so many seasons, it was still their rightful home, and thunder was the last living cat with eventide blood running through his veins. eventide was his burden to carry, his alone to return to greatness, as twilightfur had always said. even with her final breaths, as she finally gave into the illness that wracked her body and left her unable to stand without support, let alone hunt or take the journey alongside her son, twilightfur's burned with a fury that had settled deep in her bones from the day she lost her former life. she and thunder had lived many, many moons scavenging for food, barely able to survive on their own many times over. food was scarce outside of eventide's former territory, and twilightfur had never learned how to hunt under open skies, without the undergrowth and trees to offer any cover. for all that his mother was, twilightfur was a stubborn cat, spitting at the thought of learning to hunt like daybreak warriors, and, as a result, she and thunder often had to settled for crowfood and the smallest scraps.
indentthe grass under thunder's paws felt soft, untrodden and flattened only by the wind that brushed over his spine. the trees yawned before him, but, to his keen eyes, they were unwelcoming. there was no telling what had happened in the forest since twlightfur's escape. the trees had seen death and the downfall of an entire clan, and thunder had no choice but to wonder if he would be welcome under the leafy canopy. for all her knew, daybreak warriors had settled into the abandoned camp, or a group of rogues had made the forest into a home on their own.
indent"i'm back," thunder told the trees as he approached, drawing himself up to his full height. twilightfur said that he had inheritied his father's size. with his long legs and broad shoulders, thunder made an impressive sight, though he lowered himself to the ground as he was swallowed by the forest's shadows, aware that danger could lurk beyond any corner when there was no telling what might be contained in the unknown. the scent of mud and mouse flooded his senses, making his mouth water, but he carried on, stopping only when he found a large clearing.
indentthe exterior wall was made of dried brambles and overgrown bushes, but thunder could still imagine the holes where daybreak warriors had descended, crashing through the barrier with the sole purpose of killing the cats living inside. the cat scent had long-since faded, washed away from seasons of rain and snow, and only bleached bones and faint traces gave any indication that a fox might have settled among one of the dens long ago, but it had been gone for several moons, at least. it was only there, standing in the middle of the empty eventide camp, that thunder allowed his fur to lie flat and his shoulders to relax, releasing the tension that made him rigid.
indent"i'm here," thunder said, announcing his arrival to the phantoms that had once lived in the clearing. he imagined the clan cats moving about him, as if starclan cats were watching him in that moment. he puffed out his chest and cleared his throat. "i'm here now, i'm home." but the words felt strange on his tongue. thunder had never had a home before, only the stories of his mother's former clan. the clearing had never been his home before, but he supposed that, in time, it would become his own. he would know every inch, every blade of grass, and it would become his.
indentas the days passed, thunder felt the feeling of melancholy descend. he had found eventide's forest and their camp. he began to rearrange the brambles and ferns into a recognizable barrier that could, with more time and effort, become a camp wall. he caught prey and slept in the old dens, but nothing else happened. he wasn't sure what he might have expected, perhaps for starclan to welcome him to his ancestors' home, or for a sign to be written in the stars of where he might find clanmates to help him drive away the daybreak cats from the moorland, but nothing happened. the days continued to pass, with night bleeding into morning, turning to evening and then to night. he slept fitfully, waiting for a starry cat to prod him from his dreams, or for a cat to announce themself to him while he patrolled the forest, learning the land.
indentit was only several days later when thunder encountered another cat, hearing a hiss and a curse as a cat struggled through the undergrowth. no starclan cat would be tangled in brambles, and thunder feared that it might be a daybreak warrior, that is, until the breeze carried the milky scent of a medicine cat. thunder padded out of the shadows to confront the stranger.
indentthe kittypet's long, silky fur had been caught among the brambles, and he hissed again as he struggled to free himself, either choosing to ignore thunder or not having the sense to scent for another cat or predator. when thunder finally cleared his throat, the kittypet looked up with rounded eyes before he beamed at thunder. "hey there, friend. mind helping me out?"
indentthunder eyed the stranger warily. everything that twilightfur had ever told thunder aout daybreak warned that they were conniving and manipulative cats, more likely to strike from behind. the cautionary tales gave thunder pause as he stared at the stranger for a long heartbeat, reassessing the moment. he supposed that daybreak didn't know of his arrival, let alone his parentage if they had found out that he was living in the forest. besides, the kittypet wore such an open and earnest expression, their fur so glossy and stomach plump, that thunder doubted the possibility of the cat before him training as a warrior. so, when the kittypet spoke up again, thunder finally relented.
indent"thanks for not standing there all day, i thought you might've been daydreaming for a minute there," the kittypet said. when thunder merely grunted, working to help free the long fur from its entanglement, the kittypet grinned. "not much for words, huh? you wild cats - you're all like that, i swear. but i don't think i've ever seen you before. my name's hercules, i live in one of the dens over the rise, there."
indentat that, thunder snorted, unable to help himself. "hercules, that's a name alright." where he was broad-shouldered and strong, he supposed that the kittypet had never had to hunt a day in his life. he was well-fed from the food from his twolegs, but soft and small. up close, thunder was sure that he wasn't a daybreak warrior.
indenthercules huffed, as if unsure whether or not thunder was making fun of him. "well, what's your name then?"
indent"thunder," he said.
indenthercules relaxed at the introduction and nodded, thanking thunder when he was finally freed. he shook himself out and sniffed. "where have you been living? i usually know the cats living around these parts. never seen you before." when thunder gestured over his shoulder in the direction of the clearing, hercules' whiskers twitched with curiosity. "i've heard stories that the ghosts of dead cats live there. have you seen them? i heard they used to be mean clan cats, practically the size of lions. not even clan cats from the moor want to go there, you're brave."
indentit was a lot of information to take in at once, but thunder cleared his throat, not wanting to seem as though he had been caught-off guard. "i haven't seen any ghosts. but i'm a clan cat from far away. i'm going to be a clan leader."
indent"a leader, really?" if it was possible, hercules' eyes widened even further. "does that mean you'll get to talk to the ghosts? is it true that you have nine lives?"
indentthunder ducked his head sheepishly. "i'm not a leader yet. i don't have nine lives." as soon as the words were out of his mouth, thunder felt the air change and hercules shrugged. the interest and intrigue had been sapped away, and thunder felt that he had failed. here was his first chance to meet a cat and recruit a member for eventide. even if the kittypet wasn't a warrior, there was a sharpness to hercules' eyes, and he had a clue about the other wild cats and other clan cats. he would be a useful asset, but he was no longer interested in thunder, a cat with only one life. by all accounts, a fraud, or delusional, believing himself to be a great leader when he hadn't received his lives. during his walk back to camp, thunder knew that he would have to speak to starclan and receive his nine lives, at long last.
indentas night settled, thunder curled up in the middle of the clearing. he closed his eyes tightly, waiting for sleep and dreams to come to him. he thought: starclan, come to me. i'm here. where are you?
indent"we're here, thunder," a familiar voice said, and thunder gasped, breathing in cool night air when his eyes shot open to find his mother standing above him. in death, she held her head higher and she appeared healthier than thunder had ever seen her. her dark fur was soft and silky, not unlike hercules' pelt. another cat sat beside twilightfur, their narrow muzzle and yellow eyes exactly as twilightfur had described, and thunder dipped his head to duskstar.
indent"welcome, thunder," duskstar said. "i've waited a long time to meet you. it's been a long time since any cat has slept in our camp before you arrived. welcome home, welcome to eventide."
indent"it's an honor, duskstar," thunder said, momentarily awestruck. "i was scared that - i don't know, maybe i had gone wrong. you didn't come right away." he waited for some apology or assurance. thunder looked between duskstar and twilightfur, waiting for some indication of what was to come next, but the starclan cats merely shared a knowing glance. silence persisted until thunder flicked his tail. "it's an honor," he repeated. "i'm eager to lead our clan, to be a leader. i've been dreaming of this moment for a long time, to be able to receive my nine lives."
indentagain, neither cat said anything for a long moment before twilightfur stood and padded closer to thunder. "my son, i'm so glad you came here. but you have not proven yourself worthy of nine lives."
indentas the words sunk in, thunder felt his resolve begin to crumble. "w-what?"
indent"leaders need to be approved by starclan to receive their nine lives. eventide has not had a leader in many seasons and you aren't yet a leader," duskstar said with a flick of their tail. "when you are worthy of the lives, you will receive them, thunder."
indent"how?" thunder asked, feeling as though his legs might give out from under him. but, already, his mother and duskstar were beginning to fade, duskstar's final words echoing in his ears. he wasn't worthy of leading their clan. he would have to prove himself as a leader, but he had no cats yet to lead. eventide was an empty camp, and no cat would follow a leader without starclan's approval. all that he had ever known slipped from his paws so quickly, before his mission had even truly started.
indentthunder didn't sleep any more that night. he lie awake in the middle of the old camp, listening to the distant hoot of owls, pondering all he had learned over several days. eventide was truly gone, he had only one life, and he would need to lead to receive his lives and name from starclan. by the time morning broke, however, thunder had set himself to work, patching the exterior of the largest den, where he suspected the eventide warriors had once slept. if he needed to prove himself to starclan, then he would. and if cats would need a name and nine lives to follow him, then he would tell them that his name was thunderstar, leader of eventide. he would tell them that he had nine lives. he would do whatever he needed to do to make his mother's memories come back to life and to make his destiny come true. he was no longer thunder, but thunderstar, and he'd never give the chance to question him again.

x- flashback to twilightfur telling thunder a story about the war with daybreak. in the flashback, she tells him that he'll defeat daybreak and lead eventide to glory, and he agrees with him. he promises her that he's be stronger and braver than anyone else, and she tells him that he'll have to be so that he can be a good leader
- flash forward to thunderstar taking morningpaw out on a patrol so he can show her the newly marked borders. morningpaw is timid at first, and thunderstar is brooding and quiet, but they run into skytrail. skytrail's nervous energy seems to loosen morningpaw up a bit
- thunderstar and skytrail go hunting for some future bestie bonding (tm) because thunderstar actually isn't sure if skytrail is good enough. he tries to get skytrail to talk and open up, and skytrail actually surprises him during their hunting. he earns +1 respect point
- the three of them go out on a patrol and they have their first sighting of a daybreak patrol. thunderstar is shocked that he's actually kind of frightened by the encounter. twilightfur's message about proving himself echoes in his ears, but so does her stories of their vicious attack and the war. skytrail and morningpaw are curious about the other clan and ask thunderstar about it, but he shuts them down and forces them all to go back to camp.
- later that moon, thunderstar names skytrail as morningpaw's mentor, though skytrail is nervous and morningpaw doesn't think she actually needs a mentor but thunderstar isn't going to hear any of it

x- flashback to morningpaw as a kit wandering in the wild and trying to fend for herself after her mother was killed by a fox
- flash forward to morningpaw training with skytrail. she seems distracted so he tries to get her to open up and talk. bless skytrail's heart he's trying but morningpaw is abrasive and lowkey rejects him
- thunderstar goes back to the daybreak border alone to try to scope it out but he's interrupted when he sees a loner being chased out of daybreak's territory. he considers going out to help them, but he gets nervous that it would alert daybreak that eventide has returned so he stays back and watches as the loner disappears into the woods
- skytrail goes to thunderstar to tell him that he needs help with morningpaw. bless skytrail's heart he's trying so hard. but thunderstar tells skytrail that morningpaw is still settling in and that she'll come around. he makes a joke about how he wasn't easy to manage when he was her age, either. and its the first time anyone has seen thunderstar smile its a miracle
- while the squad is out on patrol, they come across a makeshift camp where quartzsight is hiding out. she almost runs away but thunderstar mentions that he saw her being chased by daybreak and she gets a little antsy but she accepts his offer to stay in eventide, even only temporarily.
-morningpaw sneaks out from camp in the middle of the night to try to find the fox so she can get revenge. but she gets distracted watching a daybreak patrol. she thinks about what thunderstar said about his mission and getting revenge for those who wronged them. she vows that she'll avenge her mother and help thunderstar, but she knows she'll have to train harder and get stronger
