Username: bmkmb
Clan: CascadeClan
Cat being bred (please include their genotype): Guavascorch
pheno: shorthaired tortoiseshell she-cat with copper eyes
geno: LL / BB / XOXo / DD / aa / Mcmc / ww
What is your cat's favorite part about the warm seasons? Guavascorch has lived in two places: the first where the temperature always stayed cool, and the second where the temperature always stayed warm. The molly's favorite part of the dry season is the humidity. The Cascade lives right beside a pond, so even on the hottest days, mist clouds the camp during morning.

Accepted! ^_^ quite a Dandy tom, he would intrigue Edith greatly.

HOW WOULD THEY INTRODUCE THEMSELF TO EDITH? infernodream likely wouldn't be able to introduce himself on his own like that, he's much too shy and nervous. it's only with the help from a few of his friends that he'd be able to go over to clear his throat. "hey there," he'd say. "lovely weather for a gathering, isn't it?" but, after some further encouragement from the distance, he would ask her to go for a walk, where he might feel more comfortable to loosen up and talk about anything besides the weather.

Accepted! :D Edith would enjoy the calm presence of Infernodream.

What is your cat's favorite part about the warm seasons? Shellfreckle enjoys the nice weather, where she's able to get out and be down by the clan's stream. It is here where she'll occasionally either fish or wade through the water.

Hitze nods eagerly. "Warm weather makes it perfect to lounge by the water. Who would want to have to stay inside and huddle up when you could be relaxing like that?"

Hitze clucks his tongue in sympathy. "I'm glad you were able to move. It would be unbearable to live somewhere it was cold all the time. Also, your name has 'scorch' and that's awesome."

Username: x Griffingirl4everx3 x
Clan intended for: x Cliffclan x
Name Ram will take: x Ramblaze x
Why did Ram leave his home to join your clan?
Ram stood at the border of Cliffclan territory with a frown. Since when have cats lived here? He thinks, sniffing the air. He’d never really had a place to call home, instead of settling he’d been wandering across the land, going wherever his feet took him. The longest he’s stayed in one place had been when he was first born, and he had left as soon as he was big enough to take care of himself. He did occasionally return to places he had been before, places he had greatly enjoyed, and the cliffs near Cliffclans camp was one of these places. He greatly enjoyed both swimming, and climbing and this was a perfect spot for both. Between the calm waters, large rocks and multitude of ledges, this location was perfect. And now it was taken.
Ram glanced around before stepping over the border, not one to give up easily. He makes his way through the territory, managing to avoid any patrols. He wasn’t too surprised, he’d always been rather lucky. He reaches the beach and continues walking, soon reaching the stretch of rocky cliffs. He waded out into the water to a rock surrounded by water, but sticking out enough for him to sit an sunbath. It was his favorite spot to lay in whenever he stayed.
He’s only laying there for a few minutes when he hears an angry shout from a nearby. He jumps to his feet, looking around with wide eyes before spotting several cats swimming out of a cave not far from him. Ram quickly leaps from rock to rock until he reaches the cliff, climbing up as the other cats follow him. He stops on a ledge, looking back to see three cats following him, each having difficulty reaching him quickly. With a laugh, Ram climbs to another spot. He then waits for at least one cat to nearly reach him before moving to another spot, gracefully moving across the steep surfaces.
Soon, the three gather on a ledge far below him, talking to each other in hushed voices. With a nod, one of them makes their way down and re-enter the cave. Ram is left to settle down on his ledge, too far up for any of them to reach. Waiting to see what would happen next.
Several minutes pass before a black and white shape emerges from the water, a greying tom making his way up. He makes his way up the cliff, going as far as he could before calling up to Ram. “Greetings, my name is Eelstar and I am the leader of Cliffclan. Would you please come down so we can have a talk?” He says.
After some consideration, Ram nods and moves down the cliff until he’s standing in front of the leader. Eelstar offers him a smile before sitting down, looking off to the side towards the ocean where the sun was beginning to set.
“So, what brings you here, traveler?” Eelstar asks curiously, continuing to look out at the scenery.
“I’ve been here before.” Ram says, following the others gaze, observing the sky that was beginning to darken. “One of the best places I’ve been. Nice cliffs, nice water.” He fixes a small glare onto the leader “didn’t really expect to find anyone settled here, though I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised.”
Eelstar tilts his head, looking away from the view to stare at Ram. “So you’re here because the location is nice?” He asks, causing Ram to shrug before nodding in confirmation. “Yeah, I guess. Not a lot of places this nice.”
“Then what if we made a deal? Obviously you don’t want to leave.” Eelstar says. “I’m listening. What did you have in mind?”
“You will be able to stay on our land until the beginning of leaf-bare. You will be allowed to hunt on our land, but for every piece of prey you catch, you must catch an additional piece to give to the clan.” Eelstar offers. Ram only considers it for a moment before nodding in agreement “yeah, sure. Besides I’ll probably be gone by the next full moon.”
With a nod Eelstar turns away, climbing back down and leading his warriors back into the cave, leaving Ram to set up a temporary den in a small shallow cave open on one end to the sea.

~~~~~~
Ram was laying on top of a rock rising above the water, the same one he had been on a quarter moon ago when he had first arrived. He was laying there, enjoying the sun's warmth and the sounds of the ocean. He lets out a content sigh, his eyes slipping shut as he just enjoys the moment. Opening his eyes a moment later to gaze at the landscape around him. He pauses, noticing a strange color in the water near Cliffclans camp. Ram soon realizes the shape to be that of a kit, struggling in the water.
Ram immediately leaps down into the water, eyes wide in alarm as the tom quickly swims over to the kit, grasping their scruff and lifting them above the water. He hurries to swim into the cave, climbing up at the closest point that he could before setting down the kit.
“Hey, this kit nearly drowned!” Ram calls out as said kit starts to cough up water. The cats in the main cave had leapt to their feet upon discovering the visitor inside of the cave, instantly becoming aggressive once they say he had one of the kits.
“How do we know you didn’t take him?!” One cat accuses as another runs forward to scoop up the kit. Ram steps back with a small hiss “I saved him! It’s not my fault you all couldn’t watch him.” He huffs as a few share a guilty look. Before anything else can be said, a ginger and white she cat runs forward out of a tunnel, hurrying over to Beekit.
“Oh Starclan, what happened?” She gasps, wrapping herself around the kit. Beekit groans, blinking his eyes open “mama?” He calls out weakly “I fell into the water. But then a the strange cat saved me” at these words the clan seems to relax, now sure that Ram had actually saved the kit.
“Thank you so much for saving him!” Cherryberry says with a relieved smile. “He was asleep when I went to visit Waspthistle, and by the time I got back he was gone.” She leans forward to nuzzle Beekit “I thought he just wandered off to find me, so I started looking near our cave and I was about to start asking around when I came in and found you all.”
Ram turns away awkwardly with a shrug “it was nothing, any decent cat would’ve done the same.” He mumbles, turning and slipping back into the water before another word could be said, returning back to his temporary den.
~~~~~~

A day had passed since Ram had saved the kit, and he was now back outside the cave entrance, returning to his favorite rock. He sat there, looking around him at everything from the cliffs to the water, once again just enjoying the view. However, he kept subconsciously glancing at the water coming out of Cliffclans camp, on alert in case another kit happened to be drowning.
“Hey! Hey! Over here!” He hears a voice call from said camp. With a frown he turns to face the camp, seeing Beekit who had somehow managed to make his way to a rock just outside the camp entrance without slipping, the small tom grinning across the water to him. “Thanks for saving me yesterday!”
Ram huffs, rising to his feet in case he had to jump in after the kit again. “Don’t mention it kit, it’s not a big deal.”
“Death seems like a pretty big deal to me.” Beekit responds, causing Ram to let out a small laugh at the unexpected response. “Anyways,” Beekit continues “what are you doing here? Are you joining the clan? What other places have you been? Where-“ “woah woah, slow down.” Ram interrupts “also where are your moms? And shouldn’t you be recovering or something?”
“I’m fine now, and I just snuck out of the den again.” Beekit grins “ will you answer my questions now?” He asks again, moving to sit down on top of his rock. Ram rolls his eyes before settling down himself “fine, whatever. What was your question?”
Beekit thinks for a moment “hmm, actually I have a different question!” He says proudly “what’s the most interesting place you’ve been?”
Ram tilts his head, thinking for several moments. “Well, this place is pretty nice I suppose. I’ve also been to large forests full of trees that all blossom at the same time and turn pretty colors, only to turn different colors later on in the year.”
“Sounds boring!” Beekit says before Ram can talk about other places. “What about monsters? My ma told me she’s seen those big creatures travel faster than any cat could ever dream to run!” Ram just shakes his head, amused “yeah, I’ve seen them. They’re pretty common once you get closer to twoleg dens.”
“Oh yeah! Are twolegs-“ “Beekit!” Beekit freezes, his eyes wide as he turns to look inside “oh, ugh, hi ma! I thought you went hunting?” A black and orange face pops out of the cave “why are you out here already? You nearly drowned yesterday. Shouldn’t you be scared or something?”
Beekit shakes his head “nope! Besides I’ve been talking to Ram, he’s the one who saved me yesterday!” Beekits ma tilts her head, turning to Ram “oh? Well I’m Foxfire. Thanks for saving my son, but he really should not be out right now.” She turns to look at Beekit. “He’s given his mom another heart attack. Now come on, back in the cave.”
With a groan, Beekit hops back to the cave, saying a quick goodbye to Ram. Foxfire watches him go before looking back at Ram “he’s a little too curious, so if he was being annoying then sorry” she says. Ram just shrugs and looks away “kits will be curious” he says as Foxfire disappears back into the cave.

~~~~~~
“Are you leaving soon?” Ram pauses, the question from Beekit coming out of nowhere. He looks down at the kit laying next to him with a small frown. A moon had passed since he had first talked to the kit, and the young one had continued to question and talk to him every day without fail. Beekit had been taught to swim very soon after his accident, his mother’s wanting to prevent a repeat, especially after he kept sneaking out to talk to Ram. At this point they decided to just let Beekit do whatever, trusting Ram to keep him safe. So now Ram sat on his rock with Beekit curled against his side, with Ram telling stories of his travels up until the question was asked.
Ram lets out a sigh, looking away to stare out at the far horizon, responding with a simple shrug. Beekit frowns, following his gaze to stare out for several moments. “Well, do you think you could maybe stay until I become an apprentice?” He asks hopefully, looking back up at Ram.
Ram inwardly lets out a sigh of relief, glad to have another excuse to stay. “Yeah, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to stay a bit longer. Besides, the weather has been pretty good lately.” Beekit immediately lights up “great! I can’t wait to be an apprentice, then I’ll be able to hunt, and fight off big dogs like the ones you fought off!” He grins “can you tell me the story again? Please?”
“Again? I’ve already told you so many times!” Ram huffs. “I know, but it’s my favorite!” Beekit whines “please, please, please!”
“Fine, but I’m not gonna tell it again after this” Ram lies, knowing full well that he wouldn’t be able to say no to the kit if he asked again.
Ram ends up telling several more stories before Cherryberry appears from the cave, calling Beekit back in for the night and exchanging a friendly hello with Ram, before the two disappear into the cave, leaving Ram to return to his own den in the cliffs.
~~~~~~

Ram sat to the edge of the main cave, near the water that led outside staring down at the liquid. He didn’t feel too out of place as he had gotten used to staying for a while after dropping off prey, usually just chatting with Beekit or a couple other warriors he had gotten to know. He was currently sitting alone, Beekit and his siblings currently getting ready for their apprentice ceremony. He looks up after hearing someone approach, spotting Eelstar walking up.
“Hello, Ram.” Eelstar says with a smile. “How are you today?”
“Eh, good enough.” Ram shrugs “you?”
“Pretty good, this is the second litter born to Cliffclan that are becoming apprenticed. It’s quite exciting, don’t you think?” Eelstar moves to sit near him.
“Yeah, I suppose it is.” Ram glances towards the tunnel, starting to hear the excited talking coming from Beekit and his siblings. “Sounds like the kits are ready.” Ram huffs, amused as Foxfire and Cherryberry herd the kits into the main cave, trying to keep them from running ahead.
Eelstar stands with a small laugh, watching the family fondly. “Well, that’s my cue. Have a great day, Ram” Eelstar says, rising to his feet and making his way to the meeting ledge.

~~~~~~
Ram jolts awake, hearing something from next to his head. He blinks the sleep out of his eyes, frowning slightly in confusion “huh?” He looks down to see a shrew. Looking back up he spots Beekit- no, Beepaw standing in front of him.
“Look what I caught! Jaycloud was going to just show me the territory” Beepaw moves to sit next to Ram “but I asked if I could try to catch something, and Jaycloud said I could go ahead and try. So I tried, and caught a shrew!” Beepaw grins widely, looking extremely proud of himself.
“Good job, kit.” Ram smiles “I’m sure whoever picks it will enjoy it.”
“Oh, it’s actually for you, Ram!” Beepaw says, moving a paw forward to scoot the shrew closer to Ram. Ram just freezes, confused “oh. For me?” He questions, confused, earning himself a happy nod from Beepaw.
“In that case thank you” Ram leans forward to take a bite. “So, anything else eventful happen?” He asks after swallowing the bite, leaning down to take another as he listens to Beepaw ramble on about his first day as an apprentice.
~~~~~~

Ram found himself standing towards the top of the cliff, staring out sadly as the sky was painted with colors from the setting sun. Tomorrow was the first day of leaf-bare, and today was his last day in Cliffclan. He had been up on the cliffs all day, ducking out of sight when Beepaw had come to try to talk with him. Ram couldn’t bare the thought of leaving the clan, he had gotten so close to so many members, not just Beepaw. Call him selfish, but he didn’t want to be faced with Beepaw again knowing that he’d have to be gone by morning. He didn’t want to say goodbye, choosing to instead ignore everyone else instead of saying the words that felt so final. He didn’t want to admit how close he had gotten to the others, especially Beepaw. Beepaw had wormed his way into Rams heart, and he thought of the apprentice like a younger brother. He sighed, closing his eyes and leaning against the rock wall next to him.
“Ram? Do you think you could come down for a bit?” Rams eyes shoot open, looking down to see Eelstar standing on the ledge where he had made the deal several moons ago.
With a sigh, Ram nods and makes his way slowly down the cliff side to stand in front of the leader. “I know, I know. Be gone by sunrise.” He says, turning his head to stare out across the water again.
“Actually, I wanted to say that you don’t have to leave.” Eelstar says, watching as Ram turns to him with a confused look. “You’d be welcomed into the clan, I’m sure no one would disagree with you joining permanently.”
Ram lets his gaze wander to the rocks below as Eelstar continues. “And if you’d rather leave now, that’s ok. We’ll welcome you back if your travels bring you back towards Cliffclan. If you do choose to stay, but wish to leave later on that’s fine as well. You’ll always have a home here.”
Eelstar start to climb down the cliff “just let me know what you decide in the morning, ok? And… say goodbye to Beepaw if you do leave. He’ll be sad if you don’t.” He says, plunging into the water before disappearing into the cave.

~~~~~~
Ram walked into Cliffclans camp, being more at ease and happy than he’d felt in nearly half a moon, relieved that he would be able to stay. He makes his way through the tunnels, entering the main cave. He’s almost immediately knocked over as another cat rushes forward to press against his side.
“I’m going to miss you, Ram…” Beepaw says sadly before Ram pushes him away. Beepaw looks up at him with a confused and almost hurt expression as Ram stares down at him with a smirk.
“What? Miss me?” Ram tilts his head slightly. “You didn’t think you could get rid of me that easily, did you?” Beepaw just stares at him, still a bit confused.
“Nah, I’m not leaving. This place is too cool, I’m gonna be staying for a while.” Ram moves to sit down, looking across the cave before fixing Beepaw with a fake glare “Don’t get any ideas though, I’m only staying here because the views are nice.”
Beepaw smiles brightly, letting out a laugh “of course, of course!” He says, sitting down next to Ram and looking around at the cave as well.
Ram would later be given the name of Ramblaze, the clan warmly welcoming him into the clan. As he fell asleep that night, he felt more at home than he’d ever felt, leaving him to wonder why he hadn’t chosen to stay sooner. He slipped into sleep, vowing to do whatever he could for his new clan. He had always been lucky, after all.
End note: had to make up some events and cats, mainly Beekit since the clan currently has no kits. Had a lot of fun writing this, and it ended up being a lot longer than I intended it to be.
I feel like now is a time to ask a completely random and definitely not motivated by anything question....
Are there any borders that any of you have that are not updated in a recent post OR archive.
If you have an archive linked in your most recent posts, I will find it, I will hunt it down, and I will do absolutely nothing suspicious with what I find.
I just want to know about if there's any borders that are not recorded in one of:
a) your post coding
b) your linked archive.
If you do, please DM me either here or on discord, stating your borders, and which clan they're for, with the title clearly labelled cataramenes catethynseis, which has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm doing, definitely.
I'm not going to ignore it if you spell it wrong, I just want to see the typos for my own amusement, you have my full permission to spell that as purrposefully wrong as you want
I suggest using a format like the following:
Code: Select all
Clan Name:
Site/CS clan?
Mod:
Borders
North: (In the format: "clan name - username" or some variation that includes both of those if you want to be fancy)
North west:
West:
South west:
South:
South east:
East:
South west:
Any additional weird TARDIS shenanigans your clan does: (eg bordering two clans to the south with neither clearly being more east or west of the other, having more directions, connecting underground, having a literal TARDIS)
I am absolutely not using the power of the knowledge of the chaos of the directions of each of your clans as a basis for a ritual summoning portal so I can become a warlock, please ignore all rumours of that nature. I am also not trying to find a hole into your realm by using the naturally generated ruptures in the time-space continuum to seep through an eldritch portal; the fact this is a rumour I have to quash is slanderous.
Just fill out the form and there will absolutely definitely be no diagrams of the weaknesses in your mortal reality that cats freely exploit to get to and from gatherings recorded. Definitely.
Oh, also, I'm gonna be checking back in a few days when I think I have everything, please message me if anything changes after that but before you definitely don't see any diagrams indicating any spaghettification of the quantum borders of the homes of your little box-sitting clan-minions.
ram entry
Postby eagle, » Sat Apr 17, 2021 5:48 pm
Username: eagle,
Clan intended for: quickclan
Name Ram will take: ramcoat
Why did Ram leave his home to join your clan? WIP
indentramcoat gazed up at the stars as he sat vigil. from where he sat in quickclan's camp, the sky appeared to stretch endlessly, falling further and further away from him. he had reached for the stars, quite literally, only once in his life, and he wished that it had brought them closer together. he wished quite dearly that it had worked, but there was also a part of him that was thankful he had been unsuccessful. the stars, the gods, the spirits and legends, he decided long ago, wouldn't help him. the camp was quiet and peaceful, serene. he could hear gentle snores from the warriors' den, and a shadow flickered in his peripheral as a shadow emerged from the apprentices' den. at a distance, it was impossible to tell which apprentice was sneaking out of their den for air, but he watched, unmoving, until the silhouette was absorbed back into the darkness of the dens. he sniffed.
indent"you're up late, aren't you?" a familiar voice asked, and ramcoat finally turned his head to where poppybloom was padding over to approach him. he forgot she was on guard for the night.
indent"couldn't sleep," he said quietly, and the lithe warrior flicked her ears.
indent"i have nights where i can't sleep, either," she said. "when i was a kit and still thought that i wanted to be a medicine cat, i would try to talk to starclan. i imagined that my dad would walk down from the stars and talk to me." poppybloom paused and shrugged her shoulders. "i was young and thought that the stars could really, truly talk. but that's ridiculous."
indentramcoat blinked at poppybloom. "is it so ridiculous?" he asked. "i'd like to think that it might be possible, even for warriors."
indentthere was a long moment of silence that stretched between them before poppybloom nudged ram with her shoulder. "everything's possible, don't you think?" when ram smiled, poppybloom seemed to gain further confidence. "who are you trying to talk to, then?" she asked.
indentramcoat turned his attention back to the stars that hung suspended over their heads. "my mom," he answered. "and a few others from my past."
***
indentram was born on a particularly sunny day into a group of loners who traveled a long stretch of farm land. though they never stayed in one place too long and weren't particularly taken by the barns and the cats that lived inside them, the group rested for a time when ram's mother needed to rest and to give ram and his littermates time to open their eyes and grow so they would be fit for traveling.
indenttraveling - it was all ram would know, for a long time. it made for an interesting life, no doubt, and ram was constantly opened to different sights and scents. when the group crossed paths with another group, be it a clan, a family of loners, or a lonely rogue, they would share stories. the storytelling became a tradition in the group, with all members taking the time and effort to craft stories of their own.
indentfor the most part, the stories were tales of great adventures and legend. ram's mother, carrie, told all of the kits the stories of the ancient clans and stories of the group's former members. they were mythologies that could never be verified, but were considered facts. others wove stories of personal adventures, from slaying massive dogs and striking down badgers, to star-crossed loves and ghosts of the past. as the moons past, the kits began to take turns, finding their own sense of enjoyment in creating and imagining.
indent"i had a dream last night," ram told his friends one morning while they walked and walked. the grass was dry and coarse under their paws and there was an intense heatwave that struck the surrounding lands. ram's tongue was dry in his throat, but it was nice to be able to focus on something other than his empty stomach and parched throat. the other kits, sensing a grand story, came closer together. not too far away, ram caught his mother's eye and he knew that she was listening as well. "i was standing on the edge of a cliff," ram began, launching into his story when he had a large, captive audience with pricked ears and eager eyes. "and i was scared for a minute, you know, because i didn't want to fall off the edge. but my paws were dug into the ground and i couldn't have fall even if i wanted to. like, i was rooted in the ground. so i looked down over the edge and saw the stars glowing at the bottom. and then i looked up, and i saw that the grass was over my head, like the entire world was flipped, or like i was floating upside down," ram explained. around him, the other kits murmured to one another. it was a strange story, they decided, very strange, but they were interested, and ram continued:
indent"there was a wind, too, and a distant sound like thunder. and i couldn't do anything because i couldn't move. but i tried to find the sound. and i look back over the cliff, to see if there was something else down there. the sound grew louder, and louder, and louder, and it rumbled as it got louder. like when lightning strikes really close and you can feel the ground shake from it. it was just like that." anxious gazes flicked back and forth as the kits tried to understand the story. they whispered, wondering what the sound could have been, and ram heard one of the kits, lagoon, asking his sister if they were really supposed to believe that ram had this dream. she shushed lagoon, who grumbled in turn. ram allowed only for a brief moment of silence. "then, i realized what the noise was. i was watching as a lion came running across the stars, roaring. it was huge, bigger than any other cat you've met before. it ran right across the stars, but it stopped when it saw me looking at it. the lion stopped for a while and we stared at each other. and then it asked me what i was doing," ram said, only to be interrupted when lagoon stepped closer.
indent"you can speak lion?" he asked, sneering. ram shrugged nonchalantly.
indent"in my dreams i could speak lion, i guess," he said. again, lagoon was shushed. "anyway, i said that i wasn't doing anything, since i was stuck and the world was upside down. the lion looked at me for a little while longer. then it backed up and began to swallow the stars, licking them up into its huge mouth with all of those teeth. when i asked it what it was doing this time, the lion didn't answer because its mouth was full of the stars. but it began to run again until it stood on hte grass over my head. and it spit the stars back into place. since grass is under the stars, it returned to the ground and the sky was right again. i looked down at the cliff and saw -"
indentwhen lagoon scoffed again, ram hesitated and ducked his head. "like i said, it was just a dream. dreams are weird sometimes," he said. lagoon opened his mouth to speak again, but, in that same moment, a shout went out from the front of the group, calling for a halt. one of the group's elderly cats had collapsed from dehydration. the story was over, and it would only be a matter of days until another of the elders passed as well as well, followed by a kit. quickly, the drought took hold over the group, and it was moons before they saw proper rainfall.
***
indentseasons and seasons passed until ram and his friends were grown. for a while, they lost their interest in stories, and ram felt no desire to share his dreams with the rest of the group after lagoon scoffed at him again and again. their friendship had fallen into contention many moons earlier during the drought, and it had never been reconciled. the loner group continued to travel from place to place, but the drought had only been the first strike of bad luck for the group. if it wasn't a drought or lack of shelter for their nights, then it was an illness or shortage of prey. a group that had once boasted impressive numbers for nomads dwindled, and ram wasn't surprised when lagoon became one of the leader's supporters and most trusted cats. by then, the leader was old and nearing the end of his moons. he was weak and sickly, but he urged the group on, even when many of them had been ravaged by greencough that left the group weak and vulnerable to predators. few could hunt or gather water for those who were ill, and even fewer could fight. they needed shelter and a place to rest until they became well again, so when lagoon made the suggestion, it made sense and the leader accepted the proposition.
indentit was never clear if the leader died as a result if the greencough, or because of other circumstances. all ram could clearly recall was the aftermath: lagoon took charge of the group. he led them to an old twoleg den that was damp and cold, even in greenleaf. the sick shivered in the dingy corners of the den, and lagoon sent his trusted members out to hunt. ram, who was neither sick at the time, nor was he in lagoon's favor, had to watch as his mother grew sicker by the day.
indent"are you thirsty?" he asked her. "can i get you some food?" ram knew that she wished he would stay away. he wasn't sick and she didn't want her son to be infected, but she shivered and coughed had no choice but to rely on him. he was a good caretaker and a good son. whatever she needed, he would retrieve for her.
indentram took to telling them stories again. he thought of the great drought and the long days of walking in the heat, with the hopes that they would find water over the next hill. it had been the stories that kept them going, their oral tradition and imagination that, perhaps, things weren't so bad. the stories had made it okay then, and ram hoped that they would help now.
indenthis stories were more grounded from when he was a kit, more recollections and retellings that he had heard from others in the group, many of them gone. he told stories to give comfort, memories of members that had gone on to the stars and those who would have yet to be born. "sometimes," he said one afternoon as cold, drizzling rain seeped through the patched roof. "i remember mitsy and how he used to try to talk to the stars. d'you remember how he did that?" he asked the small group that had gathered around him, pulling their weak and tired bodies close enough to listen. in the half-light, ram could see his mother's gentle smile as she encouraged him, and he turned to the cat nearest him.
indentlagoon's sister was gentle where her brother was harsh. brook, that was her name, and ram watched the way her eyes gleamed with amusement. "i remember," she said, her voice thick with the sickness. his chest thumped with sympathy and sorrow. she wasn't the most gravely ill, but he prayed that she would get better quickly.
indent"right. well, there was one time i asked him. i said 'mitsy, who are you talking to?' and he waved his paw up at one of the brightest stars, just like this. and he said 'that one is my littermate who died from kittencough. i don't remember what she looks like, but she's a star now. she winks at me,'" ram continued. "so i asked him - i asked if it was possible for cats to really turn into stars. it seemed ridiculous at the time, y'know? and i was confused. a cat was a cat, not a star. maybe their spirits walk among the stars, but surely they don't become stars."
indent"and what did mitsy say to that?" ram's mother asked, prompting him further. they exchanged another smile.
indent"he didn't answer for a while. instead, he asked why he caught me staring at the stars so often, too. he knew that he wasn't the only one, though i don't believe that i'd ever start talking to the stars directly. it does seem like they'd be poor conversationalists, no?" ram laughed, and the others joined with a mixture of laughs and coughs. "i told him that, moons ago, i had a dream that i watched a lion swallow the stars, and mitsy looked at me for a while, the way he used to do when his eyes got round and big. he asked me if the lion had a thick vein. i said that he did, and mitsy laughed and told me that talking to the stars made much more sense, and he said that his littermate thought that same. he told me that she said i was being ridiculous." the story brought another round of laughter from ram's audience. he looked from his mother to brook, who grinned broadly. for just a moment, he dared to touch his nose to brook's.
indentat the same time, it was clear that lagoon was trying his hardest to hold fast to his leadership position. the days were dark and dreary, the days short and the nights infinite. he patrolled the group with wide eyes and a bristling tail. most of the others, ram included, kept his head down and side-stepped whenever lagoon came through. their new leader was growing impatient, clearly wanting to move on to a new home, back to the travels that their group knew all too well. when push came to shove and it seemed that lagoon was to give them no other choice, ram stepped up:
indent"we have sick cats," he tried to reason with lagoon. "my own mother can barely walk to get her own water, your sister is having problems breathing." still, lagoon's eyes were hard and cold, two twin pools of serene ice. "please, give them more time to recover. they need food and medicine."
indentlagoon sneered. "and where do you think we'll find food and medicine without leaving and going elsewhere?" he asked ram, who hesitated. in the shadowy corners of the twoleg den, he could see the hunched figures of the sick and elderly. "your stories aren't going to help them, ram. it won't keep them fed," lagoon added harshly.
indent"no, they won't," ram said after a beat. "but let me go out and hunt for medicine for them. the healthy cats can hunt for them here, and i'll be back in a few days. i'll find the herbs they need and i'll be back," ram said.
indenthe thought that lagoon would reject the offer, and he was surprised when lagoon's expression shifted, as if lifted into a moment of lucidity. his whiskers twitched. "you'll leave in the morning, then." and it was agreed. ram turned away and left to tell brook and his mother.
***
indentoutside of the twoleg den, ram was greeted with a warm sun and fresh air that ruffled his fur. the land before him was stretched wide to the horizon, seemingly endless without bounds. for days, he pressed on, checking each tuft of flowers and grass for the desired catmint. each time, he was forced to move on, further and further from his family.
indentas one afternoon gave way to dusk, ram watched in awe as a group of cats appeared to slip up from the moor, as if growing from the ground.
indenthe paused, willing for the cats to not see him, but it was already too late. they were fast, exceptionally quick as they ran across the field in his direction. he heard a shout rise up from their ranks, but the wind carried it away from him. it was only when the leader of the group cam closer and asked the question again that ram could understand him: "you're on quickclan territory. are you alone?" he asked.
indentram looked over his shoulder and couldn't help but laugh. "at the moment, yeah. but i come from a group a short travel away from here. we have elderly and sick, i'm searching for medicine for them," he said.
indentthe quickclan warrior tipped his head to one side. he flicked his tail, and a large spotted to stepped forward and bent his head to speak to the brown tabby. after they exchanged several words, the tabby flicked his tail again and turned his bright blue eyes on ram when his companion spoke up.
indent"what illness is it?" he asked.
indentram shuffled his paws. "greencough. our current home is very cold and wet. as i said, we have elderly and they won't survive much longer without the herbs."
indentat last, the patrol's leader stepped forward. he sniffed at ram before smiling at him. "my name's splashfall. i can take you back to our camp, if you'd like, and you can confer with our medicine cats. our leader isn't fond of leaving cats out to die if we could help."
***
indentram's jaws ached from carrying the bundle through the night. the quickclan cats had, without a doubt, been incredibly generous and helpful, more than ram ever could have expected. the taste of catmint tickled his tongue the entire journey, and ram felt ready to collapse from exhaustion by the time he reached the twoleg den.
indentthe silence that laid over the den was frightening, unsettling, and uneasy when ram approached, ducking through the narrow entrance. he set down the herbs. "mom?" he called. "brook? lagoon? it's me, it's ram. i found the herbs."
indentthere was no hush of quiet conversations, and the corners were empty of the shapes of the sick and elderly. only a single cough split the air a moment before ram spotted brook's familiar pelt. "you came back," she said, and ram stepped forward to meet her, but she shook her head. "don't come closer, please. there's death here."
indent"what do you mean?" ram asked. "who died? where's lagoon?"
indentbrook didn't answer immediately. she coughed. "i'm so sorry, ram."
indentrealization struck him right away. "my mother?" he asked, not needing brook's confirming nod before he collapsed to the ground. "i was gone for too long..."
indent"it wasn't you," brook soothed. "the night after you left, lagoon took the healthy cats and they left. he left us for dead, and there wasn't any food or water or herbs." her voice cracked, from sickness or from emotion. perhaps from both. ram stared at her.
indent"we should go, there's a clan not far from here. i'm not going to leave you alone." his heart sunk low in his stomach, and he felt ill. not with greencough, but with the knowledge. the guilt weighed heavy on his shoulders. "if i hadn't left, i could've tried to convince him to have stayed," he said aloud. "i shouldn't have left you."
indentbrook tsked. "we both know he's unwell. he would've left you or killed you if you tried to stop him."
indentram nodded slowly before trying again. "there's a clan not far from here," he urged when brook began to shake her head. "please, i brought herbs. we can wait until you're better and we can go."
indentbut he could see the way her shoulders shook. she was weak and more ill than the last time he saw her. they both knew that she wouldn't make it. "you need to leave, ram, or you'll get sick, too."
indent"i won't leave you -"
indent"you aren't," she argued quietly. "i'm with your mother and the others. i've been talking to the stars."
indentit was painful, more painful than anything ram had ever thought he might have to deal with. he felt brook's eyes on his back while he walked away from the twoleg den. he wished sorely that he could turn around, but he knew that he would never leave if he did. perhaps he would never truly leave. he had given brook the herbs and told her the direction to head in, for when she got better.
indentthere was a sadness that weighed his limbs and made it increasingly difficult to put one paw in front of the other. but he had to, so he did.
***
indentthat first night in quickclan, after most of the clan had gone to sleep, ram sat in the middle of the camp, his eyes drawn up to the stars. he thought of his dream as a kit, when the lion swallowed the stars and set them back into the sky. he thought of his mother, of lagoon, of the other elders and kits who hadn't been strong enough. he thought of brook and the ones who she buried behind the twoleg den before her strength failed her as well. stars, he missed them all so dearly.
indent"brook?" he whispered up to the stars that night. "can you hear me? if she's not up there... please, send her back to me," he pleaded.
indentthe stars blinked down at him, blazing on as ever, and ram watched them.
Username: bugbelly
Clan intended for: wheatclan
Name Ram will take: pineram
Why did Ram leave his home to join your clan?
Ram leaving his home to join Wheatclan was his latest (and last) rebellious stunt against his parents. Ever since Ram had stepped foot outside, he wanted to explore the world. Much to his parents' dismay. They tirelessly tried to convince their son that the world was a dangerous place, that he was much safer in the small barn they called home. These attempts to quell their son's appetite for adventure only lead to a rift forming between the family. This rift would lead to Ram acting out by venturing away from home against his parents' wishes, hungry for adventure.
On one of these journeys, Ram would find himself in a bit of a predicament. The young tom would find himself in the middle of nowhere, far from home, in the middle of a raging rainstorm. Desperate to escape the miserable rain, he would seek shelter in the only place he could find; a seemingly abandoned cathedral that stood menacingly in the middle of the forest. Much to Ram's dismay, it would only be after charging into the building would he realized that this cathedral was very much not abandoned. The leader of the group would hesitantly inquire if he had come to join their clan. Ram, interested in what clan life entailed and excited to have found yet another way to rebel against his parents, would verrrry convincingly confirm that yes, he had run in here for that reason, no other reason. Despite being incredibly unconvinced by the young tom, Feralstar would allow him to join the clan regardless.
Ram had decided that he would stay for maybe a moon or two; just to see what all this clan business was about. But as the days went on, his departure date came and went. Sometime during his stay, he finally pinned down why his yearn to explore was so great. All through his life, Ram never felt at home in any of the places he had visited. No matter how hard he tried, he could never quite get close to anyone (besides his parents). But here, it was different. The young tom would find himself quickly falling into Squirrelstripe, Fang, and Daggerglide's friend group, the trio welcoming him with open arms. Although initially hesitant, he would soon find himself growing close to the three. Ram would find he shared a similar personality with those in the group, even sharing similar interests and goals as his newfound companions. He would also find a few friends outside of his friend group, namely Bluesky and Sleetsky. He and Bluesky would bond over being similarly optimistic and friendly. Ram would be one of the few cats that Sleetsky would open up to, the young warrior enjoying Ram's energetic aura; the two toms over time would become the best of friends, hardly seen without the other.
After finding companionship in his new friend group and a few other miscellaneous reasons popped up (one of which being that he had definitely NOT fallen head over heels for his best friend, thank you very much), Ram had realized one thing. After all this time searching, he had finally found his forever home. So after going back to his parents for one last goodbye, he finally requested to receive a warrior name, ready to start his new life as a Wheatclan warrior.
