welcome @jewishcore + @oakhearted, it's always nice to see some new faces around this thread :D /LH /NM

i've started to fall out with my special interest of furbys, which is a bummer because i absolutely loved learning about furby-related stuff, but in it's place i've taken an interest in webcore ( an old-timey internet-based aesthetic ) + goblicore ( an aesthetic based around woodsy / forest-y kinda vibes ). /POS

Hi everyone! Suspected autistic here. I've suspected for a while and my friends' mom works in special ed (I feel like that's offensive but I don't know an alternative word?) and says I have a lot of autistic traits. The biggest thing that is holding me back is... I don't really understand stimming? A lot of people say their stims are hand flapping, body rocking, etc but I don't think I do any of that...

That being said I LOVE tiny and repetitive tasks with my hands. Puzzles? absolutely. crochet? wish I knew more but loved making a scarf. painting hundreds of tiny squares in watercolor? great. A few days ago I planted hundreds of seeds in individual little cells for three hours straight and loved every minute of it.

I'm also super sensitive to sensory input and hyperfixate on it if it's bothering me to the point I have to leave the room if possible. Sounds are often too loud, many smells are overwhelming, and forget trying a new food if it's got one of the many ingredients I don't like because of the smell or texture. When I get overwhelmed by sensory inputs and can't leave the room, I often end up shutting down and going nonverbal.

so yeah. I am definitely more sensitive about my environment than the typical person I'm around, and suspect that I'm autistic, but don't understand stimming. Are tiny repetitive tasks with my hands like doing puzzles and planting seeds my stim? I'd love some input

hi everyone! i'm not autistic but id like to discuss something.

i noticed this on the "read before posting" section:
∞ "Autistic person" instead "person with Autism", just like you wouldn't say "person with gay"

i find it weird that this is a rule. i know quite a few people that would prefer person with [autism, depression, etc] rather than an [autistic, depressed, etc] person. they reason that saying things like "autistic person" can make it seem as though the person's only point of importance and defining feature is their disorder and reducing them down to just that. it can seem demeaning. however, i also see people arguing for the other side ("autistic person"), as they can see this as reclaiming the term and being proud of who they are. this description is highly stigmatized though and can bring about a lot of discrimination.

so my question is: which do you guys prefer? autistic person or person with autism? i know it is different for everyone!

personally, i have bipolar II, and i much prefer person with bipolar rather than bipolar person as the latter carries a lot of stigma and negative connotations. bipolar disorder is highly misunderstood and saying a "bipolar person" makes a lot of society automatically label that person as "crazy", etc, unfortunately. if someone described me as a "bipolar person", i'd be very upset and it would make me feel like i'm nothing more than mentally ill. person with bipolar, however, sounds a lot better to me as it shows that i am still a person; i'm just afflicted with a mental illness. that mental illness does not define me.

side note - in regards to:
just like you wouldn't say "person with gay"

the difference between person with autism, person with bipolar, etc and "person with gay" is that gay is not a mental illness or disability. sexuality is not something someone can "have", like how you can have mental illness

finally someone said it
(Note I'm autistic and I fully understand and recognize autism as a neurological disorder, not comparable to being gay.)
