I’ll be breaking this first part into two steps.
One for people who want to try out the game and two, people who want to get back into WoW but just find it overwhelming.
Just as a fair warning I’ll not be covering anything about WoW Classic.
Also please note that World of Warcraft is a pay to play game, you'll need your parents or guardians permission if you're underage. Please make sure to read the rules and guidelines by Blizzard as well.
So, you want to get into WoW but you have no idea how or where to begin?
Blizzard has made it fairly easy for people to try out WoW and since the levels got pushed down to 60 and with the new level revamp, you’re in for a treat.
You’ll want to start with getting Blizzard’s game launcher, Battlenet downloaded.
It can be found here.Once it’s downloaded and installed, then you should be greeted with their new launcher.
From here you can pick which games you’d like to play/buy. But a thing you need to figure out first is what region you’ll be playing in. You see Blizzard’s games are separated into different regions, EU, US and ASIA.
This will be important for you to pick the “right one” for you to begin with since you will be unlocking things for that said account. You can change from EU to US if you want later on, but I’d advise you to pick the one you want to stay with and stay there. That way you won’t lose progress like achievements and mounts among other things.
When you have picked your region, you can pick your game, which in this case is World of Warcraft. You should be presented with a free trial up to level 20. I’d advise you to pick this option at first, to try out the game and see if it’s really something for you. Blizzard has made a completely new levelling experience for new players like you! If this is your first character you will only have the option to pick the new starter zone. It should help, guide and teach you the basics of the game - don’t forget to explore and have fun!
Once you get to level 20 you will have to buy the game to get the full experience. It is a lot of money but keep your eyes open for sales and add it to your wishlist for your birthday or Christmas if you celebrate those things.
A thing you should also note with World of Warcraft is that it is a subscription-based game experience - that means you will have to pay to play it. There are a few different ways to do this, I personally just pay for it each month, but you can choose other plans. A thing you also can do is to pay with something called WoW tokens. They can be bought in-game for in-game gold, and with the token, you can then buy game time or other things from the shop.
I wouldn’t advise a new player to go for the WoW token method though, it can be really stressful and it can be a hard learning curve to get to where you really pull in the gold you need.
Once you are done and ready to take on the full game, there are a few things you’ll have to keep in mind:
Which expansion do you want to play through, when you get out of the starting zone? For completely new players you’ll only be able to pick “Battle for Azeroth” as your levelling experience - but should you be a returning player, that has had characters at higher levels before, there is a new levelling system in place.
First, you need to locate Chromie in either Stormwind or Orgrimmar. She’ll be sitting on a big hourglass. If you’re having trouble finding her, it can be helpful to go to the mission board and pick the quest up there. That should lead you right to her with the new quest marker system if you have it enabled.
Once you have found Chromie, you can pick the different expansions to level in. You can pick between The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, Legion and lastly Battle for Azeroth.
As a new player, I think it’s wise to go with something you think you’d enjoy more, either the story, landscapes or even NPC characters. You can also go after which one you give you the fastest levelling time, but I wouldn’t say it’s worth it. If you’re new, chances are you will get lost not knowing where to go or do, so take it easy, you’ll get to the end-game at some point. A part of the adventure is also the journey - remember that.
The game is about having fun and exploring the World of Warcraft universe.
I hope this guide helped you a little bit, maybe even got you interested in trying out WoW yourself.
