it wasn't that terntongue didn't like his clanmates, because he did. everyone was good to him and to each other, and it's wasn't like any of them were slacking off and letting their clanmates do all the work. that, he knew, would make him angry.

they were just...a lot.

they kept talking to him, and wanting to know what he was thinking about, and it was weird, because terntongue liked hard facts and things that he could prove, things to which he could confidently say "yes this is right im right," and here are these cats, who said "i like you" and when he asked them "why" they didn't have an answer.

here are these cats who run on emotion, and not necessarily logic. not that that's bad. apparently, terntongue strikes a balance. you were our missing link, and now you're here and you arent missing anymore, or at least, that was how mushroomstar put it when he pushed her for an answer as to why she liked him.

yes, terntongue liked his clanmates, and he liked breezeclan—certainly more than he liked his old clan. his clanmates were just a lot, and he needed to clear his head.

"clearing his head," of course, meant letting mushroomstar know that he was heading out (don't worry, im fine, just headed for a walk, don't freak out and send a search party please. you can send a search party if im not back by sundown though because then something is probably wrong except probably nothing will happen don't worry about it)

a peace settled over him practically the moment terntongue passed out of earshot of his chattering clanmates. this, of course, made a pang of guilt shoot through his chest like a lightning bolt across a stormlit sky.

he did relax, though, and that was the important thing—he let himself uncoil, let his legs just be legs, and entrusted his feet with no responsibility other than to not drop him.

it was a peaceful walk, just along the winding riverbank through their territory. spiders crawled up trees and over the leafy detritus littering the ground, but he paid them no mind. the spiders were minding their own business, just like him, although they were off to spin webs and snack on wayward flies, and terntongue was out to, very explicitly, do absolutely nothing.

there was a moment where he did wish he'd brought one of his more lowkey clanmates along (lemonfoot, maybe? although she wasn't so much introverted and relaxed as she was...sad,) but that quickly fled his mind, because within moments, he was very glad that nobody had been around to hear him jump and screech at the soft splash of a branch splitoff hitting the water with a soft splash as a squirrel misjudged its sturdiness.

a gentle breeze had kicked up, chilling (but not stinging) his flesh as the wind tugged his fur back.

in the peace and quiet of the day, he had time to think, time to take in his surroundings. surroundings like the algae gathered in clumps at the river's edge, dirt and grass turning into dry cracked mud turning into sand and muck as the cool water dipped.

he didn't have much time to take it all in, though, because his next step was an ill-fated one, the ground crumbling away beneath his paws. down, down, down into the dirt he went, spilling topside through the hole. a sinkhole, he realised, the realisation hitting him just as hard and just as suddenly as the ground itself.

it was not a long fall, thank the divine, but it was disorienting, and made enough of an impact that a bat squeaked from its place somewhere above him and fluttered away.

standing and looking upwards, terntongue could see the small hole above him, see the sunlight coming down through it, but it was too high to jump to.

with a huff of indignation, terntongue looked away from the hole above him and out around him, surveying his surroundings. there wasn't much to look at, not really. whenever he thought of caves, he thought of places like the one he was in right now. he could hear water running somewhere further along and spotted broken spiderwebs hanging from up above like some macabre decor, but other than that? there wasn't much to look at.

terntongue turned in a circle to see if he could spot any other tunnels, aside from the one that lead, presumably, to that sound of running water, snd so, with his choice made for him, terntongue trotted along the uneven, crumbling rock towards the steady sound.

the tunnel narrowed as terntongue made his way through it, and he was relieved when it widened into another chamber before it could get too uncomfortable. there was no light here, not like there had been in the last chamber, with the gaping entrance just out of reach. the sound was much louder now, though, so he assumed he was close.

his assumption proved true, as terntongue walked further and found that the rock below his feet quickly smoothed out, made slippery by the water that had eroded it over the centuries.

terntongue stumbled some, righting himself before he could crack his jaw on the rock, and moved much, much more carefully until his nose was pressed against a rock wall, slimy and wet with condensation, and pleasantly cold in the otherwise cloying heat of the otherwise cramped space.

a little to the left and—oh! there it was, the rush of water flattening terntongue's fur against his face. yes, yes, the water had to be coming from somewhere. perhaps it was groundwater? or maybe not, given the way it fell and pooled around terntongue's feet, or the way the hole from which it came went about halfway up the wall and stopped.

terntongue's suspicions were confirmed, when, after pulling away to catch his breath, the gap from which the water came was more of a hole—one that let water trickle in steadily from the river outside.

if he could fit his head through, the rest of him would fit as well, terntongue knew, and his head did indeed fit (but only just) and so he shimmied up and started to squirm through.

it was rather tight.

there was a face in front of his, and then there was a paw against his nose. it had one too many toes.

don't breathe just move or you are really going to die

and terntongue moved, claws catching and breaking on uneven rocks not yet eroded, and then he was in the river, and then he was on the shore, coughing and sputtering and then vomiting water, but he was alive, and he could breathe, and he wasn't running out of breath.

halfway through his greedy, gulping breaths of air that hadn't been ruminating in a cave for centuries, terntongue looked down to the river.

bobbing in the river was a head. not just a head, there was a body attached to the head, which was good, and it bobbed, up, down, up, down, down the running river. and then it was gone. it didn't slowly fade away, nor did it or bob out of sight, it was just there one moment, and gone the next. it hadn't even displaced the water.

for the first time in his life, terntongue knew that he had just seen something that he could not possibly explain, and it did not feel terrifically good.

Blizzardhowl could feel herself brooding for days. She still thought of Marinewalker often. She understood that he had redeemed himself for Shoreclan, but she couldn't get over how he had hidden his past from her. She felt that the trust between them was just broken and shattered.
"Blizzard, why don't you join my patrol? You could get some practice running patrols with Marinewalker." Jasminestar offered, the blue tom next to him avoiding her eye contact.
She took a breath, shaking her head. "I think I'm going to help the healers out, they told me they're having issues with some cats refusing treatment."
The Chieftian smiled. "I'm proud you're fitting into leadership well." He dipped his head, heading towards the group of cats ready for patrol.
Before Blizzardhowl could slip away to be alone, she heard Marinewalker's voice. "You know you can't avoid me forever, right?" He called to her.
She turned back towards him, grimacing. "I think you're the last person that can tell me what I can and can't do." She spat at him, seeing the hurt in his face from her words only angering her more.'He doesn't get the right to be upset with me. He's the liar.'
"What will it take for you to love me again, Princess?"
The nickname stung right to her heart, forcing her pain back up. "I had love in my heart for you, Marinewalker. You played with my feelings, telling me that you trusted me. That was all a lie. Love needs trust, I need to be able to trust you."
"Well, what would you have done if I told you about my past? It's not like you can go back and change all the scars my father gave me, or even kill him yourself."
She took a breath, holding down her feelings. She refused to let him see how she really feels. "I guess we'll never know what I would or wouldn't of done. It takes courage to be honest and despite what everyone in the clan now thinks about you, I see no courage. I only see a tom holding in his pain, hurting everyone around him." She left Marinewalker to think, going towards the breathing rocks to do some thinking of her own.
'Why does everything just keep getting harder?' She laid by the smooth ocean rocks silently. The sounds of the beach waves lured her into a calm sleep.

'Is this the end?' The tiny tom's eyes shot open, blinking sleep away as quickly as he could. Dreams, no, nightmares, haunted him. Water ate him every night. Though it was starting to fade, just a touch, it was only ever replaced by a drowning in his own tears as he dreamt of his father and sister. Is this the end? What he asked himself when being flung in whorls through the water. He had been saved, thankfully, by his mentor. Petit Tea's eyes pricked with fresh tears. Ghosts, he was tired of crying. He thought at least the tears would be done with.

There was no light here. It had taken everyone a few days to adjust. Many didn't want to stay here, or feared more death, and left. He didn't blame them. He was surprised anyone at all stayed. But, some did. Lord Thorn of the Rose, once named Thorn of Raptors but having abandoned the name for one in honor of the molly who saved his son, had taken up a sort of mantle of leader. It was clear he didn't want to and it was all temporary, however Petit Tea appreciated it. His own new name felt both familiar and foreign on his tongue. He took up his mother's name. A smile crossed his lips as he reminded himself his best friend had taken up a name in the same vein. Petit Sugar. He'd stayed for him.

"Petit Tea! Do you want some help?" Speak of the devil and he shall appear. The curly-furred tom poked his head into the pseudo-den. "You brought a lot of those herbs to sort."
"I would, thank you." He said softly. Maybe things could be good again. Laughter from Veuve Honey's Jewel, once named Rose of Honey, echoed into his den. It was the first joy he'd heard from her. Maybe...

The current season is newleaf! The leaves are adorned with fresh dew and the sun beams gently onto the earth. Because the weather outside is so lovely, lots of cats are going out to enjoy it, and they might just need a new Clan to settle down in. Births are going smoothly and the hunting patrols are bringing back more food for the Clan to enjoy. Go out and catch some butterflies!
