the kill wrote:greypool and beepaw had been out training late that day. later than anyone else, for a matter of fact. the sun had long started to dip below the horizon, darkening the surroundings yet painting the sky with a multitude of beautiful colours; two opposites going hand in hand, rather on par for the bond that the two shared. the day had been an exceptionally productive one. greypool, eager to impress her higher-ups and teach her apprentice what she knew, had made a competition out of who could demonstrate the most skill throughout the day. this had, of course, drained the both of them, yet resulted in a rewarding outcome as the pair of them slowly trailed back to camp, generous amounts of prey present in both of their mouths.
the forest was decently quiet, the only real sound being the distant chirping of birds as they finally settled down for the night, backed by a choir of crickets surrounding them. it was peaceful, and the mentor and apprentice walked back to camp without a word, exhausted from the day and enjoying the silence between them.
until.
snap.
greypool's ears instantly perked up as she stopped in her tracks, scanning the area around her. beepaw stopped shortly after realising his mentor had stopped, cautiously looking at her. in noticing the agitation in his mentor's eyes he angled his ears backwards. "what's wrong?" the short tom enquired, his voice muffled through the prey in his mouth. greypool sniffed the air, followed by her carefully placing her catches down on the ground and sniffing once again. they were downwind, it was no point. greypool shook her head and went to reach down at the prey at her paws."it's nothing, i just thought i hea-" she stopped herself as she locked eyes with someone else in the darkness, her fur bristling. beepaw noticed this and turned to glance over, cowering slightly in place at the new discovery. greypool flexed her claws. "this is thunderclan territory, you're not welcome here. her voice stammered slightly. while she was trying to act tough, she'd be lying to say she wasn't terrified. they were too far away from camp to gather help, it was just the two of them. she hoped it was just a loner who would pass by.
the eyes blinked, followed by a deep purring sound. out from the shadows emerged a scarred, white cat with dual coloured eyes paced forward, her tail raised slightly in the air. not with aggression, however - she appeared friendly. "i knew clan cats were easily frightened, but you've certainly set a lower bar." she teased, pacing even closer to the pair. greypool hissed and stepped in front of beepaw, protecting him. "don't make me repeat myself, this is thunderclan territory, get out or else-" greypool puffed up her fur again, yet nothing seemed to work. the outsider seemed.. amused with her actions, and instead stood there grinning. she momentarily glanced behind her, flicking her tail and summoning someone to come out from the darkness. there was a quick crinkle in the underbrush, followed by a cat emerging through. they glanced over at greypool, who's expression turned from agitation to confusion, and carefully spoke. "i was just chasing this outsider out of our territory, she's.. being difficult, to say the least. do you mind giving me a hand in escorting her?" they enquired, earning a quick nod from greypool and beepaw, both of which quickly lowered their defences. "i think it would be a good idea if someone walked in front of her, to stop her just in case she decides to make a run for it. the cat continued, earning yet another nod of agreement from their clan mates. "we'll come back for your catches later.
the group set off towards the outskirts of the territory - greypool leading, followed by the mysterious white cat, and finally trailed by beepaw and their other clanmate. as they grew closer towards the edges of the territory, the white cat suddenly stopped in her tracks, almost tripping up beepaw and the other cat, and momentarily coughed, looking up at the other cat. beepaw hissed a little, stepping back away from the white cat. both the clan cat and the white cat exchanged their gazes before she turned back to face greypool, lowering herself into a hunting position. beepaw gasped, desperately looking up at his clan mate next to him. they did nothing, only staring on at the scene. "g-greypool, watch out!" beepaw warned, only a little too late. greypool spun around just as the white cat launched herself forward, biting into the warrior's neck and starting a short fight with her. beepaw froze for a second before shaking his head, he was not going to let is mentor die like this. he was confused to why his clan mate hadn't acted, but put it down to fear. beepaw flexed his claws and went to jump at the white cat, only for him to feel a sudden, sharp force to the back of his neck. beepaw found himself pushed to the ground, the last thing he witnessed was the lifeless body of greypool dropping to the ground in front of him. she had lost the battle too. he tried to struggle free, but it was no use. one final snap and beepaw's limp body lay on the ground next to his mentor.
the white cat turned over to glance at the murderer, wearing a grin on her face. "not too bad." she teased as the murderer shook their head, stepping back from the scene. they exhaled, nodded at their companion in return. the white cat stepped back from the scene, turning her head to look out of the territory. "i guess i'll be seeing you then, clan cat." she purred, vanishing into the shadows, leaving the murderer on their own. after giving one last glance at the scene they slowly exhaled, turning tail to head back the direction they had come from to go clean off, before eventually heading back to camp to join the others.
this is what starclan wanted.
uh oh thunderclan! there's a murderer on the loose - and they killed one of your pairs. better act quickly.
(and for clarification, the white cat is not the murderer)
