The orange tabby tom, Creekpatch, felt his fur prickle along his spine. Just a moment before, Fernstar had abruptly halted their patrol. The leader and her two warriors were nearing the western border of Dewclan's territory, having left the fern-layered bracken of the forest they were accustomed to. The forest thinned slightly in this area, the pines' trunks skinny and the ground only spotted with vegetation here and there. Larger prey usually lingered here, but so did their predators; hawks and coyotes being among only some of them. On this occasion, the patrol had just caught the foul stench of dogs lingering on the cool breeze.

Beside him, Birchwind said little. Though he was a stoic tom, his demeanor revealed his stiffening posture and steady eyes, scanning the area ahead. Minksnap, on the other hand, wasn't one to stay quiet much. "What is that awful smell?" She nearly hissed, nose wrinkling in disgust. Fernstar paused a few more moments to stare ahead in alert until calmly turning toward the she-cat. "Dogs. Hunter's hounds, most likely." She began. "They come to the forest for deer."

Despite their alarm, Fernstar ordered the patrol to continue alone. They would keep at high alert as they continued toward the border, and their eyes peeled. Birchwind would bring up the rear, while the Leader continued at the front. Creekpatch and Minksnap fanned out at their sides. They continued on like this for some time, and luckily, they didn't encounter the dogs they feared. But Creekpatch, while padding through the pine needles, stopped at the sudden feeling of something unusual underpaw. It was wet. The tom stepped back, curious, and lifted his paw to discover the crimson substance of blood. It was more than what would be left of a casual meal from a passerby. "Fernstar, I've found something!" He called out ahead.

The Leader and his fellow warrior came trotting over, their tails raised tall behind them. The molly lowered her nose to the ground and sniffed the blood. She lifted her head once more, seeming unnerved by something. "Someone's been wounded, badly." Turning from the tom, she directed the others. "They might still be somewhere around here. Quick, all of you, spread out." The patrol spent well into the day searching through the woods. Fernstar herself was determined, adamant on finding the victim of the dog's attacks - or so that was the situation they had assumed. But against their will and determination, the warriors were unable to locate whomever it was. They convened at a sparse pine with its bark diseased and reluctantly made their way back to camp.

As the patrol entered the bracken, the thick vegetation cloaking them from the open view, Creekpatch trotted past the others to make his way beside the Leader. He brushed his shoulder lightly against the molly's. He could sense her defeat in their inability to find the source of the blood. "We should search again, next sunrise. Whoever it was should be out there." Fernstar glanced to her side, dipping her head in agreement. "We will, I've already decided." She seemed troubled, her eyes filled with concern. "I can't help but feel that whoever is out there needs us to help them, and quickly."

Creekpatch lifted his head. "We'll find them." He said with certainty, though he himself wasn't sure whether they really would or not.

Florasong trotted back into camp, after having joined the healers in Foxspots' burial. No one in the clan really knew much about him, considering he had joined not too long ago. She enjoyed his company, and he shared a very important secret with her not too long before he died. They were unsure what to do with the information until now. She had to tell Jasminestar about Marinewalker's kin. She rushed towards the leader, noticing that Blizzardhowl and Marinewalker were close by.
"Jasminestar! I need to tell you something." She urged, glancing over towards the two little love birds with disdain.
Jasminestar nodded, sitting down slowly. "Go ahead then, what's wrong?" He questioned, his tone serious.
Florasong shook her head. "I need to talk to you privately. It's about those rogues."
Blizzardhowl sat up, taking a step away from the blue tom. She dipped her head respectfully to her father, looking towards Florasong. "Anything you have to say to him about that, you can say to me as well. I need to know about the safety of the clan as well."
The she-cat scowled. "It's actually about your little mate." She glared back at the tom. She could see the worried look in his eyes, seeing that he already knew what she was talking about. Florasong looked at Jasminestar. "He's one of the rogues. Foxspots says he's their leader's son and that he used to run with them." She hissed.
Blizzardhowl laughed. "What is your problem? There is now way that it's true."
Florasong's anger rose, her shouting now loud enough for the whole beach to hear. "How dare you! You will believe the dangerous outsider over your own kin? He could be a spy, feeding them information about our patrols." She hissed, "He's a monster's son! Those rogues have orphaned kits, they almost killed your cousin, and have ruthlessly murdered many of our great guardians!" She added.
Blizzardhowl took a second, then looked towards Marinewalker. "Is it true...? Are you with those rogues?" She questioned, her guard high. Jasminestar was eyeing the tom expectantly, trying to read him.
Marinewalker could feel his heartbeat in his throat. He had been caught in his lies about his past. Would they kick him out if he admitted to being related to the rogues in any way? He took a breath, looking towards the ground. "Razor is their leader and... Yes. He's my father." He could hear gasps and whispering from the cats around him.
Lynxpaw growled, whispering to Featherstream. "I told you I didn't trust him... Sad I let him around my own sister!"
The blue tom continued, looking towards Blizzardhowl. She didn't meet his eyes, refusing to look in his direction. "I left once Razor started to go mad! He grew up with the rogues, but I knew what they stood for was wrong... I didn't even mean to run into one of your border patrols, but once I did I knew that the cats here were honorable and righteous. I just wanted somewhere to call home that I could be proud off."
Lynxpaw hissed. "You've probably brought your father's wraith to this clan!" He called out, taking a step closer.
"We would of been safe and left alone if you didn't show up!" Florasong added.
"I've heard enough!" Jasminestar stated, his voice firm leaving no arguing from the surrounding cats. He looked towards Marinewalker. "If what you say is true, then perhaps you are redeemable in your decision to leave the rogues. However, only the stars know the whole truth to this. I want you in camp at all times. You are only to leave on border patrols, which you are permanently assigned to my patrol. If anyone has a problem with this, bring it up with me." He ordered. "I want to believe what you say, boy, but I also have my clan's safety to think about." He added.
The gathered cats dispersed, Blizzardhowl lingering for a moment. Marinewalker took a step towards her. "Princess, I know I made a mistake, but I lo-"
"I don't want to hear your crap!" She hissed, pausing for a moment with the crashing waves of the beach filling the silence. "I told you everything, I shared my feelings and fears. What did you do? Hide everything." She turned to face him, tears flooding her eyes. "Don't call me your Princess, I want to be nothing to you." She walked away, heading towards the royal den.
Marinewalker, despite finally getting the truth off his chest, felt as if he had been crushed the second he saw his first love cry.

Beetlepaw was in the healer's den with Mammothpaw. There were a couple of herbs on the stone ground she was batting at, giggling. "So, when are you going to come back to training? I need you to show me some moves, Mammy." She questioned, using her pet name she always called her friend.
Mammothpaw sighed, resting his head on his paws. "Sometime soon, I hope... I don't want Woollypaw to finish her training before me."
Beetlepaw pounced on the pile of herbs she had made, only for Redflame to enter the den.
"Great stars! Do you not have enough guardians to bother that you have to come into here to make more work for me?" He hissed, making Beetlepaw freeze with her ears flat in embarrassment. The cranky healer took a breath, groaning. "Out with you! Grab a couple of trainees that aren't doing anything like you. I need you to bring in more moss, the bedding around camp are starting to dry out."
The black she-cat nodded quickly, dashing out. However, she remembered to give her friend Mammothpaw a quick smile before she left. Soon, she found Otterpaw, Seapaw, Forestpaw, and Rampaw chatting together over their meals. She trotted up to them, explaining the job that Redflame had given her.
Forestpaw groaned, "The healers really can't wait to give us something to do, huh?" He complained.
Seapaw, smiled and giggled lightly. "Oh it's alright, it could be a bit fun."
Forestpaw shuffled his paws a bit, "Okay..."
Rampaw shouldered the black and white tom, frowning. "Don't let Featherstream hear you, no one wants a whining kit as a trainee." Forestpaw rolled his eyes, following the group from the back a little.
Beetlepaw sighed, leading everyone towards the mossy hollow. "It's kind of like we have our own patrol, huh guys?"
Otterpaw grinned. "Yeah, first time I've left the camp without Goldfishmist following me around." She laughed a little, smiling a bit at the thought of the tom.
"Oh, he is sooo in love with you!" Seapaw teased lightly.
Otterpaw felt her face warm up. "Uh! No way, we're best friends. Me and him were toughing it out in the jungle before we came to Shoreclan, he's probably just worried for some reason." She explained away.
Beetlepaw giggled. "She doesn't want to admit that she likes him back yet, Sea." The black she-cat added.
Otterpaw flicked Beetlepaw with her tail. "Yeah? Well, do you like anyone?" She questioned.
Beetlepaw glanced back at Forestpaw, who was casually ignoring Rampaw's teasing. She shook her head quickly. "Nope! No tom catches my eyes." She lied, pushing the conversation to someone else. "What about you, Seapaw? You've got half of the trainees wanting your attention."
Seapaw giggled. "Oh, stop! We're all just friends, we're too young to care about finding love or anything." The three she-cats continued to chat about this and that, plenty of gossip to talk about.
Beetlepaw kept thinking about love, however. Did Forestpaw think about her the same way? Or was she just another friend to him?

- That being said, Langsat takes Ignitionpaw on his final assessment. The majority of it is a verbal question-and-answer session, though, for the sake of identification, they leave camp for a short amount of time. (Langsat doubts that he'll fail the latter part; the seeker has always had a sharper eye than even her.)

[ A bit of mess - that was how these assessments should have been described. Of course, that wasn't the apprentices' fault; rather just a series of unfortunate events that led up to their failing. Mottlepaw received a thorn in her paw early on, calling it quits and resigning herself to trying again later. Her paw will need +1 dock. Crescentpaw got a bit of a scare from a large deer jumping out of a bush, and was unable to calm down enough to continue her assessment. Finally, Fennelpaw fell into a shallow pool of water, and got chilled and later came down with a fever. He will need +1 feverfew and +1 moon of rest. ]
