Honestly, for me I feel like it's sort of a forgive and forget?.. Like, it was years ago, they should apologize and move on, it just hurts people to dwell on stuff like this
but I guess I could understand how it could change one's opinion on them,
idk, not trying to invalidate anybody's opinions (especially those who were the victims of the bullying) but that's just my personal take on it

It is definitely far bigger than any other of the bullying scandals especially now :c

Oh wow, I definitely took a break from Twitter at the right time. I already quit hanging around Carats because most of them had bad attitudes so I never really got invested in Mingyu(or most of the members really).

I knew about the bullying stuff because Kihyun of MX, my bias has been accused. You know, bullying people is awful, but when it’s been more than ten years since the supposed incidents... and Kihyun’s reputation is super good aside from this, even recently he made a large donation to a Korean nonprofit. I guess it’s that Korean desire for revenge(there’s a word for it but I don’t remember it). If it were me, I’d probably just get counselling or something. It’s not something I feel so I don’t understand.

Edit: They went through Kihyun’s school records and he’s innocent! Starship is now looking to take legal action. I wish other companies would act fast like this.

the reason that all these things are coming out now might have to do with naver deleting it's 'most searched' tab, which is widely used in korea to get updates on current news. without this tab its easier for things to be ignored and swept under the rug. people are panicking because it's essentially there last chance to "expose" celebrities. very recently there was a bullying scandal with two volleyball players that turned out to be true, so there is a sort of "me too" movement with bullying going on.

it's also important to note that bullying is a much bigger issue in korea than it might be in other places. bullying is universal, of course, but due to culture and the fact that there are no consequences to bullying in korea, it's really bad.

exactly what nila said at the end here. the things (mingyu specifically but in all these cases tbh) idols are being accused of are inexcusable. its not something that can just be swept under the rug. its not something you Just Go To Counseling For like. it ruins your life. as someone whos been bullied its whole life for countless things i can confirm and im sure many of you can as well, so i dont personally see how anyone can think this is a case of forgive and forget, ESPECIALLY with mingyu.

I think this is probably the most important point. It doesn’t feel the same to non-Koreans, so the reaction is different.

I’m sorry if what I said before offended you, but this ties to the above point: this would never be a thing where I live, because it’s just assumed that the mistakes you made in school as a child are things you and others have moved on from. I have said and done things, mostly in elementary school, that definitely hurt others. I made up for it later on, at least to those who were still around me. But my reputation at school wouldn’t matter to an employer, or society in general. That’s not really how we roll here.

I also have very minimal experience with being treated badly by schoolmates, so I can’t understand how victims may feel.

I just think it’s very important to remember how cultural differences play into everything. How international fans see these issues is different from how South Koreans see it, and the cultural background of the fans in question plays in as well.

^ yeah, especially since in western countries like the US, bullying tends to be (i'm generalizing here, but you know) dealt with better. as in there are punishments such as in school or out of school suspensions, detention, calling parents, involving the principal, even potentially being expelled.

a while ago, corporal punishment was banned in korea. which is great, that isn't the problem, the problem is that teachers weren't given alternate ways to truly give consequences to students who misbehave. they can't suspend, expel, or give students detention. the most they can do is "have a talk", which you can imagine, isn't effective. the students have the power, therefore school violence is far more common.

in other news (as if this week couldn't get anymore chaotic) kakao m (owns the streaming service melon in korea) pulled all their music from spotify. hundreds of songs and artists can't be streamed through spotify anymore.
