I was wondering if that was just because it's medicated and she knows, or if it's it the meat - does anyone know if there's anything else that classes as a bland diet?

You could try boiled turkey or baby food with chicken or turkey in it. As long as it's not seasoned it should be fine.

My beloved 14 year old cat passed away in early January from a rare and aggressive nasal cancer that had no reasonable and effective treatment option. It was heartbreaking to watch her struggle, and even harder to make the decision to put her down, but I do believe it was the most humane and quietest way it could have gone. I love and miss her, as I alway will, and have so much to thank her for. She was my first cat and blazed a cat-loving path through my family. She was found hanging around outside our house and refused to leave so we eventually took her in about 13 years ago. She turned a family of people who had never had a pet before into cat lovers. She even managed to sway my dad in the end, which was no easy task and took years and years of hard work, patience, and persistence. Two of my brothers, once they moved out, adopted cats of their own.

She taught my family a lot of things. She taught us how to care for her when she was young, and to pay attention and to make accommodations for her as she aged. Before her, I didn't know that cats occasionally lost whiskers. Before her, I didn't know that claws grow in layers, and sometimes an outer layer will flake off as she sharpened them. She taught me how to read a cats body language, and the importance of respecting her space with a well aimed swat after she had told me she was done being pet but I didn't listen. She taught me how to play with a cat, and that you shouldn't try to pick up a cat threatening to have a fight with another cat (one of the few times I ever got hissed at). She taught me the joys of having a little furry creature in bed at night, listening as her purrs turned into tiny snores. I loved her so much, and I know she loved me. She would follow me around all over the house and in general, just wanted to be near me. It didn't matter what I was doing, she wanted to be right next to me. Some people might debate over if our pets love us, or if animals can even feel love. I know for certain that my cat loved me, or at least the closest thing that a cat can feel to love, if she actively chose to spend so much time near me and often asked to be pet.

I miss her, and always will.
But that's okay, because it meant that I loved her
To the best teacher,

My cat Misty turned 19 years old yesterday. She's got arthritis and doesn't hear or see like she used to. Though every night like clockwork she'll lay at my feet while I watch some tv. :D

Since cats are the sort of animals that typically (when providing for themselves) will have many small meals during the day, their brain is wired to basically eat whenever they get food. It's simply a survival thing which they can't turn off, even though they have a human getting them as much food as they could ever need.
That is simply to say that if you want to let your cat decide their own portions, they will more than likely end up on the overweight side of things, and as cute as that may be, it isn't good for their health.

In terms of what you should do:
1. Put her foods in safe places where she can't get to them. Smelling it will only encourage her to try and get to it, so airtight containers in spots she can't reach would be ideal.
2. Do not give her human food, aside from the very occasional snack. Do not leave your plates out where she can get to them and lick them, as the stuff you were eating might be bad for her and she wouldn't realize it.
3. Check the packaging of her foods to see if there's any portion advice, or look for portion advice online. It can help to measure/weigh out dry food at first, but eventually you learn to eyeball how much looks like the right amount. Same with wet food, the packages often have recommendations like 1 packet per day, plus X grams of dry food, which you can then divide up into several meals throughout the day.
4. Set up a feeding schedule and stick to it. For example, I feed my cats twice a day, at noon and at midnight, so the "recommended amount per day" of food gets divided into two for each meal. Which for my cats means that each of them gets a half packet of wet food and about a handful of dry food at noon, and another half packet and another handful at midnight. Having a set schedule has really helped my cats understand that begging won't get them extra food, so they usually are only annoying for about an hour or two leading up to their next meal. If you have the time/patience for it, you can divide it into even more meals through the day, and I've known people who only do one meal a day also. The important part is just to stick with the schedule that you choose, as changing it too often will just be confusing for your cat.
5. Weigh them and keep track of their weight! You don't need to do it every day, or even every week, but occasional weigh ins can help you notice if the amount you are giving her is too little or too much. Slight weight fluctuations are fine, of course, but it's much easier to solve a weight problem early on (by just slightly decreasing their portions) than it would be if you let your cat get very fat, or maybe even sick. Cat weights can also vary quite a bit depending on their build - some will be naturally smaller than others, so there's other ways to check, such as feeling their ribs and backbone. You should be able to feel them, but not to the point where they feel like only skin and bones. And it's normal for cats to have a hanging belly/loose skin around their stomach, as long as it doesn't appear to be bulging to a point where you can barely feel their ribs, or if the ribs are basically sticking out. You can google "cat weight guides" to see some examples. ^^

I have two cats and they are both quite- er chubby. We feed thrm a fourth cup of food each. I have my susspitions that the bigger of our cat is eating most of the food. Whenever we go to the vet they tell us she's overweight bit don't offer options for weight loss. Our other cat is losing weight not very fast but noticabbly-) and both of the cats can get to most of the house. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to feed them the same amount or any reasons this might be happening?

Note (the vets in our area are terrible and not well trained) note no. 2 ( im not trying to ask for medical help just suggestions)

The easiest way to help your cat lose weight is to give them smaller portions to eat. You don't have to halve them or anything crazy like that, just weigh/measure the amount you usually give them, and give them a little less than that. And measure their weight before the change, and then every week or so to see if it has any impact or not. What you want to see is a very slow and a very gradual decrease, as losing a lot of weight suddenly can be bad for their health as well.

When it comes to multiple cats, it can be more challenging, so I recommend trying to feed them separately, or watching them as they eat to make sure that one of them doesn't chase away the other. My cats used to do that, as I had a very shy/passive adult cat, and a very "I do what I want" kitten, so the kitten ended up just shoving the older cat aside and taking his food. But eventually they learned to just.. switch bowls half way lmao.
If you're the kind of person who leaves their full bowls out all day, so they can eat whenevery they feel like it, I would recommend investing in bowls like these (just the first search result that came up, I'm sure you could find other brands/cheaper options as well if you did some research). They can be a bit more expensive, but it's the only option if you can't manually keep track of who eats from whose bowl all day.
Another option is playing with your cats more, or taking them on walks, to make sure they get more exercise, but that isn't always a safe option for older cats, especially if you suspect they might have health issues.

Re: Cat Chat 2

I would love some cat advice!

My 6 month old kitten is so attached to me that she cries incessantly every time I close a door (bathroom, bedroom, etc.) I read you're supposed to ignore the attention-seeking behavior, and to NEVER open a door when she's crying, but it hasn't helped at all. I'm home with her all day (except errands) so she gets all the love, attention, playtime, and exercise a cat could possibly want. I do make her sleep in a separate room at night with her sister so I can get some sleep (otherwise she cries outside my bedroom door all night long OR if she's in the room, she's very disruptive).

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you.
