The collapsing space-time continuum took Amanda "Mandy" Olson from the
year 1978 to the 21st century. Mandy grew up in a rather ordinary suburb
in the outskirts of London until the age of fourteen, when both of her par-
ents were affected by the rampant unemployment. A few years later, her
mother died soon after the sudden diagnosis of a brain tumour, and while
Mandy's father had been luckier than most in finding work again, he lost
the job when his grief took a serious toll on him. Mandy's older sister may
have found comfort and purpose in her studies and student activism, but
Mandy pushed away what remained of her family, dropped out at seventeen
and started drifting, for lack of a better term. She went to rallies just for
the rioting, vandalized more buildings than she could count with vaguely
anarchic, nonsense slogans, and lied her way out of trouble (or by telling
cops that Mandy was short for Manfred — it's a family name). Mandy's

that one hot mess teenage delinquent who never grew up and smokes
way more than anyone ever should. She plays the role of an easy-going
punk well, when in reality, she is just a kid running away from her prob-
lems, and this time she may have done it too well, because she has land-
ed in the 21st century with no hopes of ever confronting her past. A leap
of forty, fifty years may seem like very little compared to the journeys
others have taken, but it feels like centuries when the first thing you do
in the 21st century is try to look up your sister and end up finding an
obituary in the newspaper that tells you you've missed her by a few
months. But really, what might be the most disturbing thing is that ap-
parently everyone's still kind of into Star Wars. Oh, and you have no-
where to go and technology has taken, like, frightening leaps, and you
have no idea how anything works anymore. I need a smoke.
