Worm sucked in a big breath of hope, here goes nothing! Worm walked towards the rubble where her future leader and his mate were helping their fellow clanmates dig through the rubble to find, hopefully, injured but alive cats or at least the bodies. Worm walked up towards him and cleared her throat, "Blackstar, remember the proposal of joining your clan you gave me? Well, I thought really really hard and I've realized you might be short on apprentices and warriors. With that said, I'd like to accept your offer of giving me my new apprentice name, Larkpaw."

she/her - Bisexual/Bi - Tags: ---

She had managed to chase down the rabbit and finish it off. It was, up close, quite the skinny little thing but it was better than nothing, she had to help her clan anyway she could. She soon found a tree with large roots and tucked the rabbit under them for safekeeping until she comes back for it later. Rowanfeather then proceeded to sniff out any more prey. She didn't have much luck where she was so she continued moving southwest, Maybe, if I'm lucky, I can stumble across a mouse or two! She had thought hopefully. Finally, as she was about to call it quits and go back to the others she scented some finches. She got closer, quietly and heard the quiet chirping noise they made, she lowered into a hunting crouch praying to starclan that she'd be able to catch this little creature. She pounced and nearly missed but just before it noticed her she managed to catch it. She retrieved her rabbit and headed home quietly.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€As silence settled over the two for a few moments, Bumblebrookโ€™s mind began to wander to recent events. His eyes narrowed slightly, claws itching to be unsheathed and sink into the earth before tearing it apart. While misery lurked in the tomโ€™s heart, so did anger. Anger that threatened to tear him apart at any given moment. Why must they suffer? They had done no wrong. He had to keep himself from crying out in pain, sorrow and anger twined together. It felt like thorns latching onto his very soul, refusing to relieve him of such pain. A feeling heโ€™d known once before, but had never imagined to feel again, least to say so strongly.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€His thoughts shattered and revealed to him reality once more. The voice of Frostpaw caught his attention, causing his ears to twitch in acknowledgement. It was only due to him knowing the land so well, that he had managed to avoid stumbling while lost in his thoughts. Sorrow cried out once more as the apprentice continued. Obviously, there had been no other choice but to leave...the question was, could they? With so many injured, could they really manage to move to a new location? Their hearts were heavy enough already. The older warrior knew everyone was exhausted, from both their duties and emotions. Some were clearer to read than others, though they were all struggling. Frostpaw was a perfect example, while his stride was strong, his voice betrayed him otherwise. Hollow it was, something that wasnโ€™t fitting for an apprentice so close to earning his warrior name.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€Bumblebrookโ€™s whiskers quivered as the tom continued, though was quiet otherwise. โ€œPerhaps. Though I wouldnโ€™t doubt the thoughts of a cat such as Tigersiege.โ€ He replied after a while. It was about as much as any sympathy he could muster, as he wasnโ€™t quite familiar in expressing such emotion. He said nothing about the tomโ€™s mother, believing it would be best to leave the subject alone for the time being. He hadnโ€™t seemed to want to talk about it, thus he wouldnโ€™t force him to do so. They shared the same experience of losing one close...or rather, oneโ€™s relative. He couldnโ€™t honestly say heโ€™d been close to Owlskip, unfortunately..

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€As the two continued onward, the tom kept his senses sharp. They didnโ€™t need to run into any trouble unnecessarily. When Frostpaw spoke again, the tomโ€™s ears pricked. He wasnโ€™t sure why the apprentice seemed to hesitate for a moment. He presumed he was wondering whether it was time to head their separate ways, though Bumblebrook decided it would be best to stick together for the time being. He approached the younger tom, nudging him on the shoulder. โ€œAny idea sounds good to me. I believe it would be best to hurry then, you have a clan counting on you after all.โ€ He replied quietly, before stepping away. He then resumed following the young tom, since he had little idea of what Frostpaw had in mind.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€Unfortunately for them, their trek wouldnโ€™t be eventless. In the skies above, an eagle lurked. It drifted slowly, no more than a small figure among the trees, before it turned sharply. The warriorโ€™s ears twitched as dread began to overwhelm him, though due to so many other emotions that rested in his soul, he nearly missed the eagle as it began to dive toward them. Swooping down with impressive speed, the bird extended its talons as it aimed for the cats. โ€œFrostpaw, watch yourself!โ€ The tom called out, with little thought about keeping his voice low. Perhaps the noise would scare the eagle off, but such was wishful thinking. Itโ€™d take more than a yell to scare the bird away. Thus, the tom bared his fangs and unsheathed his claws, preparing himself in case thereโ€™d be a little scuffle.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€Wrenshineโ€™s words might as well have fallen upon deaf ears, as the older molly ignored them. If she wasnโ€™t in such an odd place, she mightโ€™ve taken a swipe at the two. Though, she did have a point - the clan needed her and the longer she was trapped among the rubble, the longer the clan would have to do without her. The going was particularly slow, but there was progress nonetheless. The ginger molly did all she could from where she was, though her paws were beyond exhausted. Everything seemed to ache and her throbbing leg wasnโ€™t helping her one bit with keeping a strong face. As the rubble that had rested upon her leg was moved, it was clear that it had swollen quite a bit. Must you really swell at a time like this? Of course, a swollen leg was nothing compared to what the clan had just gone through the previous night, but it certainly didnโ€™t help her pride. Wrenshine seemed worried for a mere moment, but her expression quickly changed to one of determination as she darted off to find Cinderpaw, the clanโ€™s medicine cat apprentice. Or perhaps, one should say medicine cat, since theyโ€™d lost their former one due to the rockslide, though perhaps he was a tad too inexperienced for the title. There was quite a bit of responsibility resting upon the young felineโ€™s shoulders, nonetheless.

โ”€โ”€โ”€โ”€Reddawn watched as Wrenshine left her and Dusttail to finish the rest of the job. Letting out a huff, the molly wasted no time in continuing. โ€œWell, letโ€™s keep going then.โ€ Dusttail seemed to be a tad quieter than Wrenshine, which was just fine in the mollyโ€™s opinion. As the last of the rubble was being cleared, she couldnโ€™t help but let out a sigh of relief. Of course, her leg still throbbed with pain, but that was at the least of her concerns. It was something that had lingered with her for moons, itโ€™d only been irritated again most likely. There was a slight possibility that there actually could be something more serious, but it was doubtful. At least, in Reddawnโ€™s mind, though she was no medicine cat. Neither is Cinderpaw. Though, that was who sheโ€™d be seeing if this didnโ€™t turn out right. Hawkscreech was dead, so Cinderpaw was all the clan had. Starclan really had shown them no mercy, hadnโ€™t they?

The striped molly's ears pricked when soft pawsteps approached her. She lifted her head off of the cool stone, a steeled look settling in her eyes as Brindletuft approached her. Was her appearance so concerning that it was drawing attention? Tigersiege looked around, but none of the other cats seemed aware of her state -- a good thing, of course; the last thing she wanted was to be fawned over like a frightened kit when there was work to be done, cats to be saved.

Her pelt bristled at the whisper of touch from Brindletuft, though it was more of an unconscious reaction than a show of aggression. Most cats tended to keep their distance around her -- for good reason -- but she found there was no warranting any kind of malice towards a she-cat who clearly meant to comfort her. The deputy sighed at her clanmate's purr, allowing herself to close her eyes and hang her head. "I'm sure you heard the stories of what happened on mine and Stagfell's assessment day," she said after a few moments. "These days it's always remembered as some feat of herosim: the day I fought off three rouges single-pawed." Opening her eyes, she flexed her claws on the stone beneath her, her expression blank and distant. "But no other cat was there. No one had to see the blood. No one had to see what I became in that moment. When our mentors finally found us, Stagfell's condition took prominence, and in the days that followed nobody cared to ask if I was alright. I was showered with praise and given my warrior name as a testament to the strength I'd had." Tigersiege shook her head softly. "I suppose I feel the need to tell you a bit of truth after what you just saw. I'm under the impression most cats see me as the cat they want me to be. The cat they've been told I am."

Now that the patrol was underway, Stagfell forced himself to remain alert and aware of his surroundings; cats being carried off by hawks and eagles had happened before, and he certainly wouldn't allow it under his watch. The golden-furred tomcat prowled through the open grassland, ears pricked and jaws parted to sense for both predator and prey. After moments of searching, he picked up on the fresh scent of a hare and began following it earnestly, only slowing down when the trail led him to the dark mouth of a burrow.

"Hmmm. Jaguarpaw," the warrior said quietly, beckoning the apprentice forward. "I want you to go down and flush out the hare; the rest of you, fan out so we can catch it." Once he was sure the patrol understood their orders, Stagfell positioned himself behind the burrow in case their prey decided to double back and try to retreat into its den again. He crouched down and flexed his claws, casting a cautionary glance up at the skies to make sure nothing was hunting them; not only that, but he wouldn't put it past a particularly ballsy bird to try and steal their catch. When all of the cats were in their places, Stagfell nodded to Jaguarpaw to signal it was time to flush out the hare.

"I suppose you're right," Buckspar murmured. Maybe it was better to leave the matter of StarClan's involvement -- or lack thereof -- in the accident to his leader and medicine cat. Something about that decision sent a chill down his spine, and he soon realized that it was because his mother was now dead and amongst the ranks of his ancestors. Which meant Buckspar wouldn't have anymore contact with her, not unless StarClan suddenly decided to start speaking to ordinary warriors. The realization made his chest ache, and if Dipperflight weren't beeside him, he might've let out a melancholic wail.

Instead, he slowed his pace as SageClan's border came into view. The bicolored tabby renewed the markers and checked for signs of anything unusual, but all was well in this part of the territory. With a nod to Dipperflight, he continued onward, keeping the border to one side of them. "How are you holding up?" he asked his clanmate. Normally, Buckspar would be content with silence, but rarely was he put on a patrol with just one other cat.

The apprentice nodded solemnly as Batflight spoke of Hawkscreech and Cinderpaw. She likened the situation to having to become Clan leader when you weren't even a warrior yet -- not exactly possible, but an apprehensive thought nonetheless. She didn't say anything, instead opting to follow the older cat's lead as he listed what they'd be gathering. When he was finished, she nodded and stepped forward to begin her gathering. First, she wound any cobwebs on her paw, then carefully nipped off herb stalks once they were clear of the fine filaments. "Do you think you might want to become a medicine cat? It'll be awhile before any of Waspstrike's kits are old enough. I guess it would just be a temporary thing, but I know Cinderpaw will need all the help he can get."

Lavenderpaw paused in her herb gathering to gather up some of the long grasses around them. Moss could be a bit of a luxury at times, what with the sparse trees in their territory, so most nests were usually woven from dried grass. I can't bring enough for every cat, but it'll do good for one of the queens or elders for tonight. Hopefully this would be the last day SageClan had to spend in their ravaged camp. The molly was excited to see what Frostpaw found for them, albeit a little daunted by how much work would have to be put in to make the location comfortable and protected.

When she was satisfied with her bundle, she took the cobwebs she'd gathered and used them to make a separate bundle for the herbs, minimizing the chance she'd lose any of the precious plants. "I reckon that will be enough for now, don't you think? We can always make another run." Lavenderpaw sniffed at the herbs she'd collected, unable to recognize anything but hoping they'd bring back something useful.

Larkpaw
she/her - Bisexual/Bi - Location: Rubble & Territory - Tags: ---

Larkpaw quickly bounced around and thanked him. "I really really appreciate it!" She mewed happily. Larkpaw started to attempt to help dig through the rubble hoping to start to gain her clanmates trust, as Larkpaw. It had been about an hour after she got her name and she was exhausted. She pardoned herself and left the rubble to take a short walk hoping to chat with someone. She found a flower-covered clearing and sat. Despite her being an official apprentice she'd wish she had someone to share her joy with. Besides Blackstar, no one else knew or probably, cared. Loneliness was one of the hardest battles for Larkpaw to fight.

Larkpaw searched and searched for something or someone to share life with but so far, she had absolutely no luck at all, life was great but so lonely at times. Maybe I should practice my battle moves and hunting skills so I can be advanced! She thought. She sat up and turned to the nearest tree, unsheathing her claws, climbing up it and flipping of it repeatedly, half-hoping someone would see how cool she looked. "Sometimes loneliness is good." She murmured out loud knowing most likely no one would ever hear her. "I know this'll impress them!" She said, sort of confidently. Soon she got tired of practicing that and switched to practicing hunting crouches and pouncing. The truth is, she was awefully quiet and she liked to use that to her advantage most of the time.

Beartuft stepped out of the warrior den, head lifted high as he took in a deep breath. Another beautiful morning. Beartuft spotted Duskpaw chatting it with one of his friends. Beartuft grinned as he gazed on his apprentice. Maybe He'd let his apprentice relax a bit this morning before taking him out for training. Duskpaw had been working his tail off lately. He should get a break. Beartuft's world suddenly seemed to black out for a moment, a jarring feeling swept over him, making him frown. As quickly as the feeling had came though, it left. The large tom shook himself. This morning started to feel familiar. As that thought grew, Beartuft's heart started to beat faster. A sense of fear started to wash over him. The camp around faded out, replaced by debris and destruction, before turning back into the home he'd grown up in. Beartuft staggered forward, eyes widening in fear. A loud crack echoed in his mind. The mountain! Duskpaw! The memory of yesterday's events flooded his mind. Beartuft tried letting out a yowl, but no sound came from his muzzle. He started to race towards his apprentice, but no matter what he did, Duskpaw only seemed to get further, and further away. The camp started to crumble around him, yowls and screams of his clanmates filled his ears before he was swallowed whole by the ground.

Beartuft jerked awake gasping for air. His head was pounding. The only thing that he seemed to feel was pain. He felt dried blood on his pelt, but couldn't move his paw to feel his head. He could hardly move anything. Beartuft coughed, wincing as he did due to his sore throat. He was still pinned down. The tom let out a groan as he lifted his head slightly. Thank Starclan he hadn't been completely crushed under all this rubble. One of the only things he could see was some sunlight peaking through from cracks in the rubble above him. Probably the only reason the tom was still alive. He had no idea how long he had been passed out for, and without any air... well he'd be in Starclan now. Beartuft felt his stomach twist. His clanmates. Were they all okay? "h-" Beartuft had to cough again, his voice sounded so rough and weak to his own ears. He started to worry if anyone might hear him at all. Starclan please... let someone be around. "Hey!"

Tornstream's ears perked up as he pawed the rubble. He heard a bleak cough from the rockfall, a heavy one. โ€œHello?โ€ He spoke, hoping he'd found another survivor. The same voice spoke, the tom hearing a weak, โ€œHey!โ€ Tornstream's eyes glanced at the area where the sound came from. His paws felt strong, and spirit beamed from the cat. The tomcat approached the rubble and started prodding the rocks. He called out, โ€œI think I found someone!โ€, asking for assistance.

No more panicked wails or sobs of worry for the clan mates they had lost and the ones that were still trapped under tonnes of rubble that had fallen from the great mountain that had been so imposing yet magnificent in his eyes. Sunswallow could recall the numerous tales he had been told as a kit and young apprentice of the mighty peak of rock and the few warriors who had actually dared to attempt and scale it's height. His ambition had always driven him to believe he could and would one day be one of those renowned cats who would revel in the success of climbing the behemoth mountain, though now he was sure that it was less likely he would ever be able to achieve the feat he'd always dreamed about. There had only been one cat he had spoke of this ambitious goal he'd had and now they were no longer there. His beloved mother had always been an advocate for him even when he wished that she hadn't been. He wanted to become more independent, yearned to achieve his own success and his own legacy on his own without the help of anyone else, and yet when it came to his mother and her gentle soul and kind heart he found it to be a losing battle to ask her to let him be. No, she was the only one he couldn't say that to. Be it his father or his brother, he was certain they would understand where he was coming from to a certain degree and wouldn't question his need for independence.

As Morningbird's kind eyes flashed behind his own, Sunswallow faltered a step and nearly snagged his foot on a raised tree root. Catching himself at the last moment the bicoloured tomcat straightened up and his face took on a solemn, distant display as those eyes that he would never be able to forget were imprinted in his mind. When he had discovered that his mother had been among the many cats who had been killed in the rockslide his heart had broken. Right at that moment there was a void that blossomed in the recess of where part of his heart had once been. Sunswallow could imagine the grief that the news brought to Stagfell and Buckspar, he imagined it probably had an effect on his mighty aunt as well but hadn't spoken to any of them to confirm those thoughts. His way of coping with his grief was putting as much distance between himself and others as he possible could right now while still serving his clan, especially in such a difficult time. It was uncertain whether Sunswallow didn't want to face his family because he didn't want to see their pain that reflected so closely to his own or because he didn't want them to see his own.

So he did what he was best at and hunted. He spent hours of the day out in the forest hunting for the clan, anything to keep him out of camp without being questioned about it. He'd buried numerous furry bodies under bushes and at the base of trees for his retrieval whenever he planned to return to camp because that was the bitter reminder that he would have to return. The young warrior glanced skyward, his eyes flitting through the tree branches above in search of any tree-dwelling prey that he could hunt but was quickly relieved of his search when a rustling in the bushes a little off to his left made a slight rustle as if something were stirring within it.

The previous morning had been so normal, as mundane a start the the day as any other and looking back on it Timberfall concluded that it was quite literally the calm before the storm. No one could have predicted the rockslide that tumbled down the mountain at an appalling, heart-stopping speed right onto their camp. It had caught everyone off guard and the ones who had escaped it's smashing clutches were the lucky ones. She she one of the lucky ones. Timberfall had been out on patrol, only just nearing the camp entrance when she heard the rumbled and the whole forest shook. She could remember as vividly as ever the terrifying sight of the slabs of rocks descending the mountain in a storm of dust and the sight of her clan mates streaming from the camp and helping as many others as they could. Though not all were fortunate enough to have escaped and the survivors later discovered just how many clan mates had fallen when they were searching the rubble in hopes of finding their trapped clan mates alive.

With each limp, lifeless body they found Timberfall felt her stomach twist and a sickly feeling grow in the pit of her chest. It only grew when she couldn't find her sister anywhere. Perhaps she had managed to escape the rockslide in time and just hadn't returned to camp yet? Or she could be trapped beneath the rubble... the thought had set up camp in her mind and refused to vacate, on furthering Timberfall to nearly hyperventilate with worry. She couldn't lose Tatteredstem. Not her too. Not after their parent's death, she wasn't sure what she'd do if Starclan took her sister too. So much had happen the following day that she hadn't had much time to let her frantic mind take hold of her actions. Tigersiege had been appointed deputy and cats had been sent out to search for a new camp while others continued to search the rubble for survivors. That was where the tall tabby was located at the moment she heard Tornstream's call that he'd found someone. The warrior's head shot up from the crevice she'd been searching and nearly stumbled over her paws on the rocks to get over to the tomcat. "I'm coming!" her breathy voice called over to her clan mate as she jumped from slabs of rock to reach their location. Timberfall was fighting every urge to ask who it was that Tornstream found but thought it better to bite her tongue. They would find Tatteredstem, she knew they would.

Finally reaching where Tornstream was digging through the rubble, the molly hunkered down and helped the tom lift a large pice of rock up and it was then that she heard the voice of the cat her clan mate had been talking about. "Beartuft! It's okay, we're here, we're gonna get you out!" Timberfall called to her trapped clan mate, hoping to reassure him of his safety. Concentration was etched across her face and even though her paws had grown numb from all the digging she had been doing, the fact that they had found another survivor numbed her from the numbness of her paw pads. She dug along with Tornstream as the missioned to unveil Beartuft from the rocks he was imprisoned under, hoping they really would be able to get him out.

There was only darkness behind her eyelids, a darkness that seemed to expand the harder she willed to see a glimpse of light. She couldn't remember what had happened or what had become of her. Was she dead? Was this what death was, this impenetrable darkness that she was trapped in? A few long minutes passed before she felt a tingle in her eyes and one of her eyelids twitched with movement. She wasn't dead! It seemed like a tremendous feat just to peel back her eyelids and once she did she was greeted once again by a darkness, yet this one was lighter than the previous one that had entrapped her. Tatteredstem moved her eyes to survey her surroundings and as she did so a jolt sent pain like she had never felt before straight through her head. A loud hiss erupted from her maw and she had to dig her teeth in her tongue to stop from screaming in pain. Why was she in so much pain? What had happened to her. A couple heartbeats passed and it wasn't until the pain ebbed down in volume and became bearable that she opened her scrunched orbs again. This time she focused on what she could see in her line of vision and as her eyes adjusted to the dimness around her, deducted that it was rock. Rock surrounded her. That's when fragments of her memory came back to her, flashed across her mind like spots during a migraine. Rockslide. Camp. Darkness. Her heart nearly stilled when she realized she was trapped beneath the rubble of the rockslide.

What about camp, the clan? Dear Starclan...Timberfall! She felt her pulse quicken as the realization that she had no idea where her sister was sunk in real deep. In an attempt to move her body she lifted her head just slightly to test if there was any pain and, while there was initially, it lessened to a throb that she could work with. That she had to work with. There wasn't much room for her to move to begin with but Tatteredstem could just lift her head without hitting the rocks that were overhead. Sliding one paw out from under her crumpled body was a clean, painless movement but as soon as she went to move the other, another jolt of hot, searing pain washed over her that almost rendered her unconscious. The pain was so intense that it made her cry out, so loud that she was afraid it would shake the rocks and have them crush her once and for all.

โŠณ ROOKPAW โŠฒ
She | 10 moons | Apprentice
Tags: Beartuft, Tornstream, Timberfall, Tatteredstem | Mentions: Stonetooth | Location: Camp rubble

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž In a heartbeat, Rookpawโ€™s attention snapped off her mentor and instead to Tornstream as his call cut through the air. She froze for a moment on her paws, eyes darting back and forth, before finally baring her teeth in something between a grin and a snarl and hurrying away. โ€œYou stay with Waspstrike,โ€ she said over her shoulder, with only a fleeting thoughtโ€”soon dismissedโ€”for the repercussions of ordering her own mentor around. โ€œIโ€™ll take care of this!โ€

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž Nearly overbalancing with exuberance, she scurried to join Tornstream, only to find that Timberfall had beaten her to it, the two already busy clawing away at the rubble that trappedโ€”Rookpaw paused for half a heartbeat to recall whose voice she thought sheโ€™d heardโ€”Beartuft. Rookpaw froze in her tracks, claws shooting out before she could trip. She eyed the two cats who already seemed to have it handled with a mix of disappointment and, although she wouldnโ€™t speak of it nor acknowledge it again, intimidation.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž With Rookpawโ€™s personality, it was easyโ€”at least for herselfโ€”to forget her size. Her earliest days hadnโ€™t quite made for easy development of muscle, and as much as Rookpaw poured into her training and meals now, she was still smaller than most of the apprentices around her age. Tornstream stood far taller and sturdier than she, as did Timberfall, the two together enough to dwarf her in strength and size. Beartuft wasnโ€™t particularly small either, so maybe it was for the best that they were already on it. Though Rookpawโ€™s teeth still gnashed as she hung back and watched.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž Another cry rang out, and Rookpawโ€™s attention jerked toward the rubble sheโ€™d heard it coming from, ears shooting upright again just like that. โ€œI think thereโ€™s another one over here!โ€ she called, already rushing over. Indeed, the rocks were shifting as if another cat was moving beneath, positions likely too precarious to be moved by a single catโ€”not that Rookpaw wasnโ€™t going to try.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž Her mouth started to open to call for help, but Rookpaw soon disregarded the notion. Someone had to have heard her yell about the other cat buried in the rubble, right? And besides, it would definitely be more heroic to do this all on her own, wouldnโ€™t it? Rookpaw wouldnโ€™t snap at any assistance (well, probably not), but still, she had to at least try.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž Resolve hardened, Rookpaw dug at the rocks with the best of her might. Her claws scraped against stone, pushing it aside with the reckless ferocity that all but ruled Rookpaw (and some difficulty, given the weight compared to hers). One paw slipped, and she bit back a disgruntled yelp as she steadied her paws again, trying to get a hold on the body crumpled beneath. โ€œWhoโ€™s down there?โ€ she yelled, raising her voice to be heard over her clamoring paws. โ€œItโ€™s Rookpaw! Are you okay? Can you hear me? Iโ€™m going to try to get you out!โ€

โ† BATFLIGHT โ†œ
He | 30 moons | Warrior
Tags: Lavenderpaw | Mentions: Cinderpaw | Location: Territory outskirts

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€ŽA deep-seated sense of nostalgia was knocked loose as Batflight began to gather as much as he could, delicately plucking free webs and dragging up herbs by their roots. The motions were practiced, as simple as breathing. He could recall going on similar excursions when he was perhaps around Lavenderpawโ€™s age, attached to Hawkscreechโ€™s sideโ€”he must have been quite a thorn, he realized now, with his constant questions and clunky movements, but hopefully heโ€™d been able to do at least some good.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž His mentor hadnโ€™t been too happy with him for shirking some of his more important training, either, he recalled. Batflightโ€™s whiskers twitched slightly at the memory, though whether into a frown or a smile he himself wasnโ€™t sure. Those days were long gone now, and so were most of those, Batflight realized with a start, he had known then. Including a good portion of his family.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž Lavenderpawโ€™s question had him blinking, knocked out of his bittersweet reminiscence. There was a pause before he could formulate an answerโ€”it was far from anything heโ€™d been thinking, let alone anything heโ€™d expected her to say. โ€œI suppose I havenโ€™t thought about it too extensively. Everything is still so hectic, and it isnโ€™t like I was properly trained for that sort of a role,โ€ he said, ears twitching a bit awkwardly. โ€œKnowing and gathering herbs is all well and good, but a medicine catโ€™s duties are far beyond that. To be responsible for carrying the messages of StarClan to the rest of our clanโ€ฆ Iโ€™m not certain Iโ€™m fit for something like that. And I would never dream of replacing Hawkscreech, let alone so soon.โ€ They had barely even had time to process his passing, let alone carry out a proper ceremony for him and all the others theyโ€™d lost.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž Wincing when he realized how much heโ€™d laid on an apprentice, Batflight inclined his head in an unspoken apology and quickly moved on, pausing to match what Lavenderpaw had already gathered. โ€œFor now, Iโ€™ll help out where I can. I do intend on returning to my warrior duties before long, but I suspect we all need to step a bit out of our comfort zones to restore SageClan to its former glory. So to speak, of course.โ€

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž He glanced over what heโ€™d already gathered up and redoubled his efforts as best he could. Certainly they wouldnโ€™t be able to uproot the entire area, although that was likely a good thing in the long runโ€”exhausting all of the herb stores around their territory would be a surefire path to disaster in the future. Still, he managed to gather up a good proportion of cobwebs and other herbs, some he recognized and others he couldnโ€™t recall off the top of his head.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž When he saw what Lavenderpaw had gathered, Batflight brightened. โ€œYes, thatโ€™s certainly good for now. Good thinking on the mossโ€”I believe some of the other apprentices were arranging nests, so that should help a considerable amount.โ€ He tipped his head forward with a quick flick of his tail. โ€œThank you for your help; Iโ€™m sure Cinderpaw will appreciate it as much as I have. Shall we head back now?โ€ He was already starting to walk back toward the path, arranging the herbs into a more manageable pile and shifting his jaws around what he could fit in his mouth, but he paused to make sure Lavenderpaw was intending to follow.

โ‚ SCORCHSTRIKE โ‚
She | 48 moons | Warrior
Tags: Jaguarpaw, Stagfell, Jayspring | Mentions: None | Location: Prairie

โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€ŽScorchstrike waited with curled claws as her apprentice slipped into the burrow. Jayspring and Stagfell had taken their positions, the three breathing and watching in steady synchronization. The air was still, only the slightest of winds running across her fur, and the prairie was quiet, as if all were waiting with as much tension as the hunting party.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž This was always Scorchstrikeโ€™s least favorite part of hunting, particularly if she had to rely on another to this extent. She had faith in her apprentice, of courseโ€”she did like to think sheโ€™d taught him some skills, and the situation was one that left very little chance for errorโ€”but her natural impulsivity made sitting and watching difficult. When the smell of prey still hung around her nose, prompting her tongue to sweep across her upper mouth, it was even more of a struggle. Scorchstrikeโ€™s back claws dug into the grass as she adjusted her position.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž A rustling noise had her ears twitching up, and the scent of hare strengthened just as it burst forth from its den, scurrying up onto the ground before the hunting party. It stiffened at the sight of the three other cats lying in wait. Jaguarpaw emerged hot on its tail, pelt gleaming triumphantly as the sun hit it. Scorchstrike had little time to bask in her flash of pride before the hareโ€™s surprise passed and it rushed forwardโ€”straight toward her.

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž With a twitch of the whiskers, Scorchstrike rose, bringing herself to her full height. The hare fell under her shadow, freezing again. Scorchstrike tensed her hind legs and lowered herself again, preparing to leap and bring her bared fangs down, andโ€”

โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž โ€Žโ€โ€โ€Ž The hare swiveled and bolted in another direction. It only took a quick jump of Scorchstrikeโ€™s gaze to track it, and as she lunged in pursuit, she called, โ€œStagfell! Cut it off!โ€

Wrenshine felt her heart sink deep into her chest as Cinderpaw hardly had the time to acknowledge Reddawn's situation. It was not because Cinderpaw was neglectful, it was because he was just so busy, and busy was a bad thing around here. Wrenshine dipped her head to the apprentice, doing her best to appear confident at his request of relocating the elder somewhere safer.

As Cinderpaw turned away from her and to his swarm of requests, Wrenshine attempted to formulate a plan. Dusttail had managed to help the first half of Reddawn out of the hole she had previously been trapped inside of. Wrenshine breathed a sigh of relief that vibrated through her whiskers. She knew she could count on her friend to take care of the situation, but it was still too much for one cat alone. For a second, Wrenshine wasn't sure if she was standing in camp or in a hornet's nest. The clearing seemed to buzz from the sound of paws churning debris and rushing from one place to the next. Her already hoarse breathing tightened in her chest and gripped her lungs with pain she could only describe as unsheathed claws.
How was Sageclan going to overcome this? What would they really be able to do once this was all over? What comes next? The anxious thoughts flapped in her mind like hornet's wings in the nest she was still standing in.

Flickerblink. Stillness. Her eyes fixated on the tom's slick short fur. His steady stillness reminded her that everything would be okay, like a branch that never waivers under the weight of your body no matter how many moons you've spent resting upon it. As her mind began to clean out the bees, she found her paws nearly unconsciously carrying her over to his side. "Flickerblink!" His name rolled out of her mouth like a swollen tongue. "Cinderpaw needs all injured cats in a safe place. Could you help Dusttail and I with Reddawn? I think she's pretty hurt." Her voice found a steady rhythm the more she faced his icy eyes. Her frail and frazzled appearance reflected in his eyes back at her like the frozen river in leafbare, and so she was able to straighten up and calm down the more she spoke. "Dusttail and I managed to clear a path for her, but we'll need all the help we can get lifting her from the rubble. Her foot is injured and she is very tired." After a moment, she attempted a joke- a hopeful grasp at convincing herself and Flickerblink that she was fine and stable now- "Besides, I don't think she likes me very much. I'm sure she'll appreciate your company way more."
