"You saw him—?" He was wildly surprised. Then, he heard Rowanscar whispering. Her works hurt more than any battle injury could. Sharply, he turned to her, furious. "I have a clan to lead," he said bitterly, "this clan here in the dark forest. I'm defending our numbers, not our emotions. Maybe I loved you too," he added, eyes hot. "But you have to choose where your loyalties lie, because Wolfstar can't save you anymore." He instantly regretted his words, knowing how cruel it was. "Thornpaw, if you want to keep training, I'll see you tomorrow night. If not, goodbye." He forced himself to wake up. He saw the sleeping cats around him and ran to his tree, climbing up to his nest.
