Hu was rather impatient during the next part of Chiron’s speech, though it was brief. Respect Laika? Sure, she would. She didn’t need anyone to tell her that. But then Will headed towards Chiron, and Ling knew exactly what to do. The silver kitsune snuck behind him, living up to her name, “Zero”. Though he was dismissed, Ling kept her post, crouching behind the unsuspecting camper. Wilhelm had been away long enough to forget the danger of not checking for a silver fox when telling secrets.

But then Chiron mentioned the other camp, and the magicians. Camp Jupiter was just.. gone. And the magicians were facing ‘their own problems.’ Seems like this crisis is not just a petty snowstorm. This time, it’s unlike any other. They, whoever they are, are attacking us within our own borders, not on some equal battleground. The stakes have been raised, the game changed. A Chinese proverb had said that “a crisis is an opportunity riding the dangerous wind”, yet was this crisis really and opportunity? For what, more deaths?

But perhaps there was one. Chiron had mentioned a quest, hadn’t he? Hu turned to Juliet, and whispered, away from the ears of the other campers, “There might be an opportunity in this crisis,” she said, excitement flooding through her, dulling the pain of their losses. “We should go on a quest. Then, we can really prove ourselves! What do you think? Maybe not the one leaving tomorrow; seems too crowded. But maybe we can try to contact the magicians, or camp Jupiter! Shakespeare, this could be the time of our life.” granted, they could die painfully, but that was just a minor issue.

“I don’t think we need to stay and eavesdrop, Ling’s got it covered. Come on, let’s go to the Poseidon cabin and camp out, maybe watch Hamilton or something. And eat prawn chips. Yes, let’s do that.” Hu them promptly started to drag Juliet towards her cabin.

When Chiron announced that they couldn’t contact Camp Jupiter, Laika was surprised. She’d depended on Camp Half Blood’s Iris message system to contact her old camp, and the comms had always been flawless. She refused to believe something went wrong with the messages. It was Camp Jupiter that was unable to receive, or perhaps pick up, the messages.

Anyhow, Laika leapt over some of the lagging crowd and landed at the head of her hunters. “Let’s get to cabin 8, and camp for the night. Audrey, get the horses settled inside the stable. Everyone else, you can crash in the cabin. I’ve got a query for Chiron, then I’ll be with you.”

Laika watched her hunters perform their duties, and headed towards Chiron. “ Sir, correct me if I wrong, but I assume the meeting tomorrow will be in the mess hall, as, ah, our previous meeting location is a bit incapacitated as of the moment.”

Ling tags Sunny

Ling was approaching her eavesdropping target when another fox started yipping behind her. She turned and saw Sunny, another fox resident of Camp Half Blood. Ling swished her nine tails, and said to Sunny in the fox language “shhh, I’m trying not to get caught. If you give us away, I won’t give you the fish I’m after,” she said, fabricating a small white lie as she was speaking.

Ling tags Sunny

The silver kitsune would’ve rolled her eyes, but it was impolite in Chinese culture. And as a manifestation of Chinese culture, she wasn’t allowed to. “Sunny, this is a very important mission for experienced foxes only. I’ve been trained for this. Just go back to your owner and I’ll get you that fish, deal? You don’t need to do anything for it, just go back to your cabin. Please, or else neither of us will get anything” she hissed, weaving more innocent lies. Of course, most of these were truths. This was a very important mission, and Ling had been trained for this. Made, rather, but there wasn’t much of a difference.

Ling tags Will

Thankfully, the young fox padded away. Ling could eavesdrop in peace, and without getting caught. As the kitsune of a daughter of Poseidon, she would have no trouble snagging a fish from the beach and sending it to Sunny. Ling crouched, ears perked to listen to what Wilhelm was about to say.

the announcements, the introductions, all seemed to fly past. it wasn't soon until chiron was reminding them all of the quest, the mere thought of which sent a fitting shiver down the length of his neck.
he wasn't sure if he was ready. he wasn't sure if he ever would be.

still, the events of the day had shown him, if anything, that the pressure was nothing to be afraid of. he had fought a venti, he had died and met his father, he had seen people perish, he'd pulled a stranger out of a freezing lake, used a ghost to find an incapacitated camper -
was it always going to be this eventful? gods, he certainly hoped not.

so with the mentions of winding down on the cards, he didn't waste time saying his goodnights to the new faces before he was slipping away into his new cabin.
it was empty, quiet. it was nice. there was an air in there that felt different to everywhere else - somewhat similar to the dark in his unconscious mind. but there were, of course, things to be getting on with on the sidelines.

after showering, teilo unpacked his bag only to pack it again with what he assumed he would need for the quest. clothes, toiletries, etcetera lined the insides. it seemed the best idea to keep emrys within arm's reach, so he put it on his bedside table.
when he was finished, he found that in the hubbub of managing what he would need, a photo had fallen from one of the side pockets. funny, how one forgot about those kinds of things, only to be hit by a truck with them later down the line. like fate had waited for him to forget.
he held it between his thumb and forefinger. studied it for the umpteenth time. a photo in the brechfa forest, two faces - one of them his - smiling like there was no tomorrow. shorts that betrayed scuffed knees. life, joy, captured.

a bittersweet smile graced his face. he put the photo next to the fob watch. a reminder of why he was in the cabin in the first place. a reminder of who he was, who he could have been, who he inevitably became.
and then, lying in the mattress that seemed form-fit to ease the ache of his muscles, he fell asleep.

after laika's introduction, orin clapped, albeit reluctantly, and tried his best to focus on the next words that the centaur had to say.
the quest. camp jupiter. magicians - he didn't make out all of the words, but he got the gist. a prophecy, the mess hall, eighteen precious lives -
and their names. listen with sombre tones, all, in their own right, daggers in the centre of his chest.

did chiron just look at him?
he chose to ignore it.

orin stood, though his legs were essentially gelatinous, and raised a hand in a weak, mock salute to auggie. "until morning, right?" he said. there was nothing else to be done. the day was over. campers were milling around, talking, saying their goodnights, but the bed in cabin one called his name. he would be damned if he wasted any more time hanging around an obsidian flame. "goodnight, auggie."

orin tottered to his cabin, stumbled his way in and through to the bathrooms, where for the first time, he got a proper glimpse of himself.
that -
actually, yeah. that explained a lot.

his hair had somehow lost all of its life. there was a bruise forming in a crescent around his left eye, branching to his cheek. the point where his forehead met his scalp was smeared with dark and dry flakes of blood - he imagined if he could turn to look at the back of his head, he would find the same. his eyes were sunken, his lip somehow split, and he had about seven eyes drifting in circles around his skull.
maybe the latter was explainable by the formers.

he showered off the blood, and though it was painful, the hot water unknotted some of the tightly woven muscles, a thankful respite. then came preparing for bed. a short task - he was claimed by sleep almost immediately after he hit the mattress, a welcome escape.

Cassandra Peters|19|Hermes/Cabin|11|Head Counselor|Loc:Campfire|Tags:Hermes Cabin Edgar|Mentions:Campfire peeps Juliet and Hu
Cass felt her heart clench hearing the names of all of the deceased campers especially Gianna. Cass wasn't particularly close to the girl but she still felt grief and some guilt consume her. After announcements were finished Cass stood up "Come on guys let's get to bed" She called out to her cabinmates giving them a tight smile before she turned and began heading to the cabin her campers following behind her. Looking out of the corner of her eye she saw Hu dragging Juliet towards the Poseidon cabin, although Cass was slightly concerned about the chaos those two would bring she let them be since she didn't want to interrupt their fun at least not tonight. As Cass was walking she suddenly felt a weight on her left shoulder and smiled turning her head to greet her Raven, Edgar "Hey buddy good to see you" She murmured with a small smile giving him a scratch on the neck ruffling his black feathers, Edgar giving her an affectionate nibble on her fingers. Cass turned to her cabinmates "Once we get back to the cabin and y'all are ready for bed you can give him some treats" She said with a grin hoping that would help improve their mood.

Augusta Reynolds|17|she/her|Hades|Head counsellor|Campfire|tags:Orin, campfire

Auggie felt her chest ache as the list of names went on and on, seeming to blur together under the weight of everything pounding inside her head. She hadn’t been very close to any of them—she didn’t tend to be close with many people—but it still hurt. They were still members of camp, they were still lives that had been cut far too short. She didn’t know Chiron was holding it together up there, having to put on a brave face while saying something so unimaginably dark, but judging by his expression it wasn’t an easy task.

She raised an eyebrow as Orin got shakily to his feet, wondering if he would actually make it back to cabin one. She nodded to him, giving a half-hearted salute in return, but not trusting her voice enough to respond verbally. Not wanting to stick around the dismal campfire and heartbroken faces much longer, she got to her feet and made her way to cabin thirteen. She flopped into bed in the clothes she had on, knowing that as exhausted as she was, she probably wouldn’t sleep a wink.

Jamie Wallace|16|he/him|Iris|Campfire|tags:Aggy, campfire

Jamie did his best to listen to Chiron’s announcements, though he found it difficult to focus through the haze of fear and grief inside his head. Then the quest was mentioned and he snapped to attention, feeling like he’d just taken a plunge into the icy lake. The recent events had managed to push any thoughts of dangerous quests or prophetic dreams from his mind, but now it all came flooding back. There was a meeting tomorrow and due to the unfortunate activities of his sleeping brain, he’d be required to attend. He didn’t have to go on the quest though. He’d been told that a couple times now, but something about that still felt wrong, like he’d be letting everyone down more than he usually did.

He pushed the thought away. That wasn’t the biggest concern right now. He could deal with terrifying responsibilities and crippling self-doubt in the morning, after he’d had a good—hopefully dreamless—sleep. Then came the names, each one feeling like a knife to the chest, tearing at his lungs and making it harder to draw a breath. Then it was over. Chiron said a few more things that he barely heard, evidently dismissing them as a few people got up and started to head off to bed.

Before doing the same, he looked over at Aggy, his concern clear on his face. Despite his own anxieties over the quest and everything that had already happened, he was just as worried for the younger girl and the trauma she’d faced on her first day of camp. “Hey, are you alright?” He asked quietly. “You’re not hurt right? Probably best we all just get some sleep now.” He hadn’t realized until then just how exhausted he felt, but he wanted to make sure Aggy was okay before he went to his cabin and passed out.

if only i could keep you in my pocket
to give me some diagnosis of why i'm so hollow
please give me instructions, i promise i'll follow
i tripped on my ankle and fractured my elbow
but doesn't that mean that the tour's gonna sell, though?
i try to explain the good faith that's been wasted
but after an hour, it sounds like complaining
wait, don't go away, can i lie here forever?
you say that i'm better, why don't i feel better?
the universe works in mysterious ways
but i'm starting to think it ain't working for me
doctor, should i be good, should i be good this year?
