Mercurysnare has finally come to realise the power he holds over a number of the Moonclan cats, turning once trusted families into enemies fighting on different sides of a brewing war. The last piece of the plan he has mulled over for so long is finally set in motion as his darkened gaze closely trails the retreating form of the clan's hulking leader as the tom returns to his cave during the early morning. Mercurysnare's continuous whisperings of the leader's illness has begun spreading between various clan members, each remembering the terrible seizures that would have surely claimed another life for the past few moons. Mercury's most loyal warriors sprinkling in doubt of Starclan's trust and capabilities of their founding leader, edging the forming cracks further & further as they divided long time friends. Now the tom watches from the shadows as another violent seizure befalls the once strong leader, the poison of the stolen foxglove seed working its way to his heart - only a few more moments Mercury needed. The tom had been keeping a careful count of the leader's sparse number of lives, he knew all too well he only needed to steal just one more before everything finally fell into place. Once Mountainstar's heart stopped beating, the tom slipped from the shadows of the quiet cave and stood before the once powerful leader, another poison played carefully between his paws.

When Mountainstar awoke, another life slipped away from him, his eyes widened in shock as he came nose to nose with Mercurysnare, and a hauntingly devilish smile. The essence of the poison did not fade from Mountainstar's body as it used to, instead another violent spasm took over and the tom's green eyes finally took in the sight of the fresh poison crushed beneath the younger tom's paw. He couldn't believe what was happening. The ramblings of his paranoid mate suddenly made him want to rush out and find her, tell her she'd been right all along; the twistedness that found itself woven between their once peaceful clan indeed came from the rage burning within Mercurysnare, and it seemed it would be what kills him. There wasn't any time for the leader to call out, to ask 'why?' or to simply stand and see his family one final time. No, all he heard in his last dying moments was the plan Mercurysnare laid out for the helpless leader to hear, the pain & loss he would bring to his family.

Mountainstar knew it was over.

His long 50 moons of leading and shaping his clan were over, he knew not if everything he tried to teach them would help now in the grips of a new darkness; one festering from within their own family. The once great leader held on to hope as his final life slipped away with the sounds of Mercurysnare's fading triumph.

⥽ overview
the undergrowth is thick enough to cloak a cat's form completely. though entangled as it may appear, beneath the canopy the ferns create lies another
whole world. filled with creatures of all kinds, the bracken provides plenty of shelter. gaps in the stalks create useful pathways to navigate the growth.
some have been patted-down by generations of creatures shuffling along. shielded from the sun, the dirt is damp and moist, crawling with insects. the
largest of the predators burrows beneath the bracken just the same. hollowed logs and cracks between sandstone boulders act as suitable dens. there
is never a lack of prey with the abundance of tiny creatures scattered throughout the bracken. frequent rain leaves puddles of freshwater. herbs grow
abundantly beneath and beyond the bracken. hidden in the ferns, the cats can live an entire existence without being seen.

⥽ prey
dewclan cats hunt a variety of the prey you'd find beneath the fern canopy. toads, shrews, rabbits, squirrels, thrush, and robins are the most common.
where there is prey, there are predators. though the cats are the most abundant, other predators lurk. hawks can easily take their chances at snagging
a kit, and foxes can prove to be a difficult foe to keep away. sheltering among the bracken is an easy defense to avoid their lurking gaze.

⥽ beliefs & temperament
though their loyaltys have never strayed, the clan has never had a strong connection to starclan or their ancestors. rather, they often focus on the now,
and how to survive in the moment. they only hold their respect for them in the back of their minds, and hope it's enough to keep the spirits at bay. the
cats of dewclan are strong hunters, stealth being one of their strongest characteristics. kits learn from a young age to keep hidden to survive. thus, the
clan often appears as elusive to outsiders. its not often they even attend gatherings, or interact with other clans. they'd rather stick to themselves, to
worry on their own issues rather than others.

newleaf -- the territories are in full bloom and prey is running rampant, making them an easy catch. queens and kits will be much more likely to survive during birth and new cats are still likely to be found. however, the chance for drought and dehydration is higher and predators, while unlikely, are more dangerous than ever due to the abundant resources.
