Kuri kept pace behind Terra for some time until the banks of snow started to raise in level, slowing down their progress. The snow wasn't the worst part, he could just shake that off. It was the slush of it melting and dampening his fur. It'll be drenched by the end of the treck. Great... It wasn't what he was expecting today. He thought it would remain cold enough. Terra spoke, and it diluted his thoughts about the inevitable. "Yeah, just fine. Didn't expect the snow to slush like this so soon though. Hopefully we get an early spring?" He said hopefully. He trudged on a few more bounds into a thick patch of snow. "How was your sleep?" He said then glanced at her, before sneezing after snow smooshed up in his nose.

"Hopefully, yes. I think we could all use a quick thaw." she replied, hopping through the first chest-deep drift. The cloud cover had kept most of the sun away which had kept the icy mix inside more solid than liquid, but the chill still found a way to seep into Terra's legs, bypassing her warm pelt entirely. Though the freezing environment was uncomfortable, the wave of icy chill coursing through her was energizing, if only for the reason she wanted to get somewhere warmer. At Kuri's question, she took a moment before answering, "Well enough. I had a weird urge to get up early this morning, so I could probably use a nap after this... I swear, nothing drains your energy like the cold and wet. Ugh!" She jumped into another drift, sinking up to her neck and grunting, "Real unfortunate this is bad snow for tunneling... This is going to be a rough scout, sorry. I'll do my best to keep breaking trail for you."

"Good to hear. Unfortunate that you couldn't sleep in, though..." He trailed off. He remembered her pacing and was about to ask what she must have been contemplating. Could it have been about the pack? Is something wrong..? Not my place to ask. I think? Right? His mind wandered for a bit, thinking the worst. "It could be worse. And hey, don't do all the work! I'm the one who should be able to suffer the expense. You have to save your energy for who-knows-what." Kuri propelled himself ahead of Terra. Snow collapsing under his chest and forepaws. "After this... I'll probably need a nap too!" He said between plummets, tossing his head back to give a glance. He knew that they would be reaching the river soon, he only hoped he could keep this up long enough. Not too far... Not too far... Not too... He kept thinking to himself each bound to keep himself going. He felt himself starting to enjoy the icy burn in his chest from each breath. He knew the way, he has fared particularly well with the leaps, bounds, dips, and grooves of their territory. He just couldn't wait for spring, the winter was getting very old, very quick.
Kuri was panting and he knew they must be close by now. Sure enough, after passing a few trees that were blocking the view, the icy riverbank could be seen up ahead. "Hey! Up ahead, almost there!" He started to feel shaky. His body was starting to fumble at trying to push himself up above the snow. He didn't want to look useless in the eyes of his Alpha, so he continued to do his best.

"We should both save some energy, but I appreciate the help," she said, falling back to giver herself a rest as Kuri plowed his body through the drifts. They had made decent headway, for the light wind was with them, and after some time they cleared a small stand of trees whose limbs bent beneath the weight of the dense, wet snow piled on them. The edge of the river came into view, stark and still and lightly dusted with a patchy blanket of white. The low gurgling of the waterfall that led off the edge of the island could be heard in the direction of the gentle mist that rose from it, though it was some several hundred feet from her position. The fog itself froze as it drifted inland and the minute crystals dropped to the ground with an imperceptible clinking. "Careful of the ice--the waterfall is still flowing. We might want to follow it some ways inland to avoid the worst of the current. You must be exhausted, though... I'll test the ice once we get there," she woofed to Kuri as she caught back up with him.

The beauty of the morning sunlight refracting off of the waterfall's mist as it manifested into crystal droplets was a grand sight. This was near one of the edges of their territory. Kuri often visited this spot because water can cause scent loss, easy for intruders or potential threats to lurk in and out. Terra mentioned about following the stream more inland. He wondered if the rest of the stream would be flowing that far away. "Alright. Do you think any of the Scouts or Hunters will be catching up to us?" It had been some time and they did make an easy trail to follow. He only hoped there weren't any bears coming out of hibernation. They've been known to come out around this time of year, once the thaw occurs. Soon, big game would return. His mouth salivated at the thought. Either way, he carried on through the snow. There weren't too many deep snowbanks as before, here and there still were some, but the majority were easy enough to manage. He slowed a little to be by her side, "Just tell me where we stop." And he let her take the lead as he trailed behind her at the same pace.

A gentle breeze ruffled Athens' fur as she gazed out upon the expanse of cloudy sea off the edge of the island. She closed her eyes briefly, her shoulders and chest lifting as she inhaled the cool morning air. There, alone at the edge of the world, she was at peace; if only for a little while. Soon, she ought to be back at camp, bidding her pack mates a good morning before allocating tasks and beginning her own.

Eban was likely also awake by now—scratch that, Athens thought, the rest are probably awake too. How long have I been out here? The clouds below, though still prettily coloured in the morning light, were no longer as pink as they were when she had arrived. A while, then, she decided, letting out a quiet sigh as she stood. Her chest pressing to the ground as she stretched, then levelled with the rest of her body as she straightened and yawned.

As much as she'd love to stay, there were things to be done. Decisions to be made. She wasn't Alpha, but she was nonetheless a leader within her pack—as a Beta should be—and she took her responsibilities seriously. So, deciding that she'd had her time for the day, she turned and began the trek back towards camp.

She thought about it for a moment, remembering camp to be a very still place before they left. "It's possible, but I don't think anyone's in a terrible hurry to get up this morning. Nobody's going to be out in this by choice, and I don't blame them," she told Kuri as she led him along the bank. The pebbly shore was still bare in some places, sheltered by occasional rocky overhangs that prevented the snow from disguising the river's edge. Plump white birds alighted in a small flock on the opposite side, scrounging for whatever long-dried nuts the squirrels had cached in the frozen ground. Tempting... Terra thought, eyeing one as its low coo echoed over the frozen expanse between them. She stifled her hunger with a swallow and kept going at a brisk trot, eventually skirting around the edge of a widened section of the river that formed a large pool. "The water is usually calm here, and there's good surface area for fishing holes," she said, setting one paw on the ice. The snow was relatively thin, revealing a veritable small lake of glassy blue ice stretching wide between the two banks. She edged cautiously a few feet out, giving a small hop to see if it would support her weight, and the ice held with no signs of cracking.

Kuri trotted in line behind her and saw the white ptarmigan birds together on the snowy ground. He looked to them, back to Terra seeing what she would do, back to them again. Without instruction, he held himself together and carried on. They had managed their way to the edge of the river. Kuri was panting as he surveyed the surroundings. He watched as she laid a paw on the ice, unsure. He's never been involved in making holes in the ice. He wasn't a hunter. Curious, he sniffed towards the edge. That's when she hopped onto the ice. Kuri tucked his tail in, scared at her sudden boldness to test the ice. He watched her, looking down at the icy river and up at her. He shuffled his weight on each paw onto the ice himself. He's crossed rivers before, he just never tested his luck by hopping on them. She's so daring... Why can't I be like that? His amber eyes lowered slightly and he carefully padded his way over to Terra.
He looked at the ice below his feet, not sure where to start. He looked at her expectantly, but decided to try without instruction. He sniffed a few paces away, found a spot close enough to the edge and far enough out to fish, and started pawing the river's ice. He noticed his claw marks started to seep deeper where the scratches aligned. Soon, the blue turned to white powder, and he gained momentum by now using both paws. He looked over to see how Terra was faring.

With a quick couple shakes of her pelt, Munae then slipped away, lumbering out of her den for a couple seconds, trying to get over the mound of snow that had seemed to form at the entrance. "Cursed-" The fae complained in nothing less than a small, high pitched whine, before proceeding to stretch out her muscles and jump over it, sending a bit of a flurry of snow out in every direction. I certainly can't have this here. Munae proceeded to move back and forth over the pile, trampling it to lessen its height and make a path for herself, before nudging any solid bits away with her nose. It was icy, of course, so she hurried and hoped no one could witness the sight of her light shivering in the limbs. With that action soon completed, she turned around again to head for the camp exit, eyes sweeping around the clearing to see if anyone else was awake or active in any way.

There were a couple elder wolves to check on for late season ticks and the like, but despite some of their complaints, it was still much easier to treat them when they weren't asleep. So for the moment, a nice little walk could do, as well as perhaps a hunt or rare sighting of herbs that might still be prevalent under insulating the snow cover.

The he-wolf started to move away from camp, tail dragging behind him and getting coated in the white powder that was snow. Interesting, really, given that something so individually small could be so cold and devastating on the land. Baron stopped after a few paces, raising his nose to scent before opening his muzzle and sticking his tongue out. With the light snowfall, it took a few seconds before he was confident that snowflakes had landed on it. There he felt them melt into the flesh, cool and slightly refreshing. It wasn't water, but unless ice was broken in, water could be hard to reach. Sighing, he approached a small pile of snow and took a few bites into it before moving on. He needed something to catch for the pack.

With Baron, ridiculously stupid and unaware of his presence, going off straight ahead, Whisper took a turn to the right and went off on his own. There was no need to engage in his packmates this early unless necessary, given they would all be much too brainless and sleep-envious to be any fun with in a conversation. He didn't need that. The wolf wanted something fun and enjoyable to play with, so he could consult other wolves later.

She walked out onto the ice, remaining on tiptoe in the case of an unexpected crack. It was smooth beneath her paws, forcing her to take small and delicate steps lest she be too bold and slip. At some distance from Kuri but still within sight of the near shore, she took a moment to watch him as he went about making a fishing hole. His fascination and sudden realization made her chuckle, though she stifled her amusement quickly as the sound began to carry through the freezing air. Beginning to dig into the ice herself, her claws initially skidded over the glassy surface but soon found purchase and formed a shallow trench of white scratch marks. She pounced on it once she was satisfied with its initial depth, her paws making hard contact with the weakened spot with a solid thump. It wasn't enough to break through yet, of course, but she felt the slightest give beneath her feet as she began to claw at it again.
