Auggie’s fist made contact with the boys face just as he’d ducked his head away, and kept going straight into the trunk of the tree behind him. She’d seen him do something, seen the arc of electricity he’d sent crackling up into the tree, but it had all happened so quickly. She hadn’t had time to react. Auggie had punched trees before, mostly when she was younger and her mom had made her mad and there’d been nothing else that she could do about it. The impact of her knuckles on bark didn’t bother her, she barely even felt it. But she felt the surge of electricity that went through her hand and into her arm as soon as her fist made contact with the charged tree. She staggered backwards, clutching her fist and gritting her teeth in pain. She looked up and locked eyes with Orin. “You—“ She bit off the rest of her sentence, holding back the flurry of curses and insults that welled up inside her throat.
The rushing in her ears was getting louder and her heart was still beating too fast. On top of that it was getting harder to breath and Auggie had a suspicion that had nothing to do with the exertion of the fight. Every time the boy spoke he only made her more infuriated, no matter how calm or peaceful his words may have been. She wanted to spit out that she wasn’t afraid of him, that nothing he could do could scare her. She wasn’t afraid of his strength or his powers. She had her own that could easily match his, and nothing could really hurt her anymore anyways. She’d grown out of fearing pain. She wasn’t concerned about any of that. But his threats were not to hurt her or to use his powers on her. He was threatening to forgive her, and whether he intended it or not that made her so much angrier.
“If you forgive anything of anyone then you’re even denser than I thought.” She glared at him, still clutching her shocked hand. “You’re really just going to see me as one of your fellow campmates? I don’t care if I’m on your bad side or not, I don’t care if you’re so senseless that nothing make you angry.” Her voice got gradually louder as she spoke, and at this point, she didn’t know where she was going with her statement. She could barely hear herself speaking over the buzzing in her ears. She stepped back and observed Orin for a moment, blinking slowly before lifting one of her frost covered hands. The frost was spreading up her arms now, and starting to crackle across the ground around her feet, though it would’ve been difficult to tell in the snow. She was moving more from reflex now than anything, she didn’t know what she was doing but suddenly a blast of harsh, icy air flew from the palm of her hand towards Orin. The blast was strong enough to make a forceful hit if it reached it’s target, and the force of it sent Auggie stumbling backwards. She landed on the grounded, gasping for breath as her vision began to blur.
