as he traipsed through the forest, he was shocked to standstill by an arrow, pirhouetting through the air and hitting a trunk behind him with a fizz. someone had seen him. or at least, they had seen some trace of him. on closer inspection, it seemed charged with something - electricity, he supposed, and teilo ventured to walk a little more carefully, dipping behind trees wherever he could.

at sight of the little clearing, the flag, he brought his hand to his mouth - offput by the feeling of warm blood that smeared his chin. it was dark, darkening still, the evening biting. he wondered if it was a result of the canopy of trees above them or simply the awful weather blocking out the sun. another harsh gust of wind. it seemed far too violent to not be concocted. i'm giving the wind characteristics. he thought to himself. stalling.
he was much lighter with his steps, much more careful about how he moved, and when his hand closed around the flagpole, freezing to the touch, he had to cover a grin.

that movement again, in the side of his vision. jamie was here. he knew jamie. he almost felt bad, hiding from him like this. there was someone else, too. someone he didn't know, but recognised regardless. and then -
a girl. she looked haggard. pale. and she was staring right at teilo.
he looked down. invisible, still. but she was looking at him. he checked - there was nothing behind him. her eyes were on him. she was focused, like it wasn't impossible, like it didn't go against everything he knew about how his powers, as mysterious as they were, worked, and his mouth opened in shock.

she looked sad. she was wearing the basic clothes of someone who was at camp half-blood, but they were wrong. she looked wrong. even in the darkness of the forest, she had a shimmer to her, a shimmer he hadn't seen for a very long time. not since he passed the pine.
fear struck. in it, he lost grip of his invisible capabilities, completely visible, staring down this girl that no-one else would be able to see. he wasn't sure why he was so scared, but his vision was blurring with tears, his skin losing its colour, breath catching at every moment. all of a sudden, the flag in his hand didn't matter. the guards who would undoubtedly jump him for his crimes didn't matter. she was staring at him, and he was stuck.

the hunters had always been a source of mystery to orin. they were wonderful. proficient in battle. magnificent - every single one of them seemed to burn like the sun when opportunity struck. they shone, stars in their own right, dedicated to a life that seemed so much more dangerous than that of a 'normal' demigod's. much lonelier, he thought. immortality, though limited to non-violent deaths, was something that frightened orin greatly. he wasn't frightened of a lot, and it seemed a strange thing, to be afraid of not dying, but it was the only constant he had. the only promise that held any weight.

she thanked him, and he floundered for a way to respond. it was like meeting a celebrity, but a celebrity who had powers that he would have never thought to utilise, skills that he would never hone. "sweetheart?" he laughed, repeating the word. "i don't get that a lot. but thank you -" she gave her name. "maria. i'm orin. or lofty. or - i got a new one today. zappy. i don't think it's very creative. it's not gonna catch on." he brushed away the thought, realising that he was garbling his words.

it seemed that maria had the same thought about the strange noise, even though he had brushed it off as the scrape of branches. he supposed that was a good thing. at the order, he did exactly that - stood with his feet shoulder-length apart, dagger clutched firmly in his hand, green, hardened eyes scraping every corner. there was no more cheeriness in his expression, just focus. he was all clenched jaws and stanced postures.
the arrow flew past. he followed it with his head, watched where it landed. he wasn't sure what he was looking for, but he doubted that maria would have shot without reason. he glanced back at her questioningly, but then back to the shadow. "come on, out you come." he called, his voice a strained sing-song. "it's boring, hiding like that. you should be ashamed of yourself. we're defenseless, and the flag's right here. how can you resist, hmm?" something sharp, harsh about his tone, chiding the hidden.

"Sorry." The Athena camper stated, feigning apology. He'd feel more sympathy towards Niji if his condition hadn't been his own doing. Still, he wasn't completely insensitive, and Aiden certainly didn't miss Niji's false smile. Every demigod had that one in common. "Better you hold onto the falafel, you might need some extra energy while you're playing." With Chuck's additional input, the two sent Niji on his way, letting him rejoin the rest of the campers as the war horn sounded, booming eerily in the snowy air. Aiden felt a chill creep up his spine. "Hey Chuck, can I ask you something?" The words slipped out before he could catch them. No turning back now. "You're in and out of the camp pretty often, right? What's it like out there? Nowadays, I mean." His question masked deeper concerns. It wasn't any secret that Aiden stayed at camp year-round because he didn't have any family to visit, but he'd also never been on a quest, even a minor one. His position as both a head counselor and a skilled fighter, son of Athena, made him an ideal candidate, but still, he never left.

"This quest is going to be dangerous, I know, but... do you... do you think anyone will--" he struggled to finish the thought. "I don't want them to die. I found out earlier that Mira's been having dreams, so she's going. But what are we supposed to do if she never comes back?" One of Aiden's greatest traits was one of his biggest flaws. He was loyal, undoingly so, and Mirabelle was one of his greatest friends at Camp Half-Blood. The two of them went back years, and while she liked to poke her nose into his business, she was always so genuine to him. And then there was Teilo, the only other camper Aiden knew had been having prophetic dreams. The unclaimed camper was difficult to read, but Aiden knew a thing or two about faking it. He related to Teilo in some way he'd yet to discover, seeing a bit of himself in the other boy in the way he checked his emotions. "I don't want them to be gone forever..."

Jamie Wallace|16|he/him|Iris|Forest, real flag|tags:CTF group, Ophelia, Teilo|Team 1
Jamie practically jumped out of his skin at every noise as they stood waiting, keeping watch over the real flag. Any crack of a twig or rustle of branches in the wind and his heart started racing harder than it already was. The snow and the wind didn’t help. He was freezing and the harsh breeze whistling through the branches and the dark clouds over head made everything a million times creepier. He jumped again at the crackling sound of a shock not far away, glancing towards Ophelia with wide eyes. It must’ve been one of Zeus’ kids, but if they were using their powers someone from the other team must also be nearby. He stayed silent, hazel eyes scanning the trees for any sign of someone approaching.

He heard a faint scuffling of noise behind him and spun around, eyes widening as the flag was lifted from its hiding place, though there was nobody there. “Uh...” He looked to Ophelia, face twisted in confusion. Was this normal? He’d suffered through quite a few games of capture the flag in his years at camp but he’d never seen a floating flag before. Before he had time to freak out or question it further, Teilo was standing there, blood smeared across his chin, looking terrified and frozen. The fear in Jamie’s eyes melted to confusion and concern as he looked at the other boy, trying to see what it was that he was staring at, or where he had actually come from for that matter. “Teilo?” He asked, voice shaking slightly.

Augusta Reynolds|17|she/her|Hades|Forest, Zeus’ fist|tags:CTF group, Orin, Maria|Team 2
Auggie eyed the two guards around Zeus’ fist. She recognized one of them as the boy who had made a big show of yelling for his team earlier, and the other appeared to be a hunter. They didn’t seem too concerned about what they were guarding at first, they seemed to be chatting calmly, but of course drawing her sword caught their attention. Good, she thought, it’s no fun if I catch them totally off guard. She watched as the huntress said something to the other boy, then quickly disappeared up a tree. Auggie knew she’d have to be careful, she didn’t want to turn her back on that tree and get stuck through with an arrow. Only moments after she’d had the thought, an arrow came flying towards her, landing a few steps away. She didn’t know how the girl knew where she was, but missing by only that much had to have been deliberate. If she’d just made a wild guess it would’ve been much farther or much closer to the mark.

Her confidence shaken slightly, Auggie skirted wider around the pile of boulders, keeping to the shadows cast by the trees so it was harder to spot her, and so she could duck behind one if the huntress shot again. She rolled her eyes as Orin started talking, sounding like he was trying to taunt her. If Auggie could keep her mouth shut and head down every other time she wanted to knock someone’s lights out, she wasn’t about to reveal herself at his jeering.

Deciding it was a better idea to be stealthy than to run up and start attacking, she made her way to Zeus’ fist as quickly and silently as she could, going around to the side so neither of the guards would see her footprints in the snow. She climbed to the top, careful not to slip on the wet rocks. The flag was right there, it was almost too easy. Something was wrong. There’s no way they would put their flag in such an obvious place and have it so weakly defended. Her powers gave her quite an advantage over the other team, but this just seemed weird. She reached for the flag and plucked it from the place it was wedged in the rocks, blinking a few times as she had trouble focusing on it. It looked totally normal to her, had she actually gotten it this quickly? After a moment, she realized why the flag had been so difficult to focus on, the mist was being manipulated around it. It was a fake. She dropped the fake flag to the ground, her camouflage faltering for a moment in her surprise as her face hardened into an angry glare.

if only i could keep you in my pocket
to give me some diagnosis of why i'm so hollow
please give me instructions, i promise i'll follow
i tripped on my ankle and fractured my elbow
but doesn't that mean that the tour's gonna sell, though?
i try to explain the good faith that's been wasted
but after an hour, it sounds like complaining
wait, don't go away, can i lie here forever?
you say that i'm better, why don't i feel better?
the universe works in mysterious ways
but i'm starting to think it ain't working for me
doctor, should i be good, should i be good this year?

Ophelia Rogers | 16 | She/her | Aphrodite/Cabin 10 | Location: Forest | tags: Team 1/ Flag guard (real), Jamie, Teilo| Mentions: Mira

She caught Jamie's gaze when looked at her over the floating flag, that's not normal... She inched closer to get a better look.
Ophelia startled when a camper appeared out of thin air. That's a new power, she mused, trying to calm her nerves. The new kid clutched their flag in his hands, but something was off. Oh gods, he's bleeding from his mouth! That thought was all it took to pull her out of her shock, and over to the kid, enemy or no.

Is this a trap? She wondered , edging closer slowly, a blade in hand. If it is, it's a damn foolish one. The camper looked as though he was seeing something, but when Ophelia followed his gaze, she saw nothing.

"Hey you," started, a little gruffly, but then she softened her voice a touch. "Teilo?" She repeated the name that Jamie had just called him. "Do you, uh, need a medic or something?" She gestured toward his bloody face with a knife.
If he does, do I send me or Jamie...or both? She wondered, sharing a side glance at her fellow guard, without turning away from the opponent. She turned back to observe him, the blood from his chin turned her guts, but that was another thing to blame on her mother. For now, there was a more pressing issue. "D'ya mind telling us where you came from," She added, stepping cautiously into knife range. It wasn't what Mira would do, but Ophelia wasn't going to get a lost game pinned on Cabin 10.

Meanwhile, on team 2...

Henry "Hank" Walker|17| He/him | Apollo/Cabin 7| Location: Forest |tags: Team 2, Guard team, Izzy, Aydan, Valkeri, open | mentions: Juliet

Hank nodded at Valkari, "We'll have you report to Chiron about the quest after capture the flag then," His gaze returned to Aydan, and his eyes widened at the mention of a girl. Could it be? No... but the snow...
He cleared his throat once he had heard all Aydan had to say. "Snow cover sounds great, but can you tell me more about this girl as we head over? Like what did she look like, did she have any powers, basic Camp Half-Blood intro sort of thing?" He said with a smile, taking a step toward the awaiting dog. and fox, but still looking at Aydan.
"As for the holes, I can send Izzy out to locate people, but she can only really point in their directions, no exact coordinates, or anything fancy," He added airily, trying to dance around the topic that scared him.

Agatha "Aggy" Clemson | 15 | She/her | Unknown (Ares)/Cabin 11| Location: Forest | tags: Team 2, Chaos team, Juliet, open | Mentions Juliet,

"You said we'd get to fight" Aggy whined, trudging after the Hermes girl.
While she wasn't opposed to snowmen, it really wasn't what she came here to do. She slashed the air with her cutlass to burn off some pent up steam, before refocusing on Juliet.
While in normal conditions she was fine with strategizing as well as fighting, she was still salty about being misnamed earlier. It was causing her to come up with some ideas of her own for Juliet..but those would wait till later.

**fixed Ophelia's response**

they were talking to him. he heard his name. it was certain. they were speaking to him, but he couldn't take his away from the girl, like they were locked in a battle, trapped in this tale. maybe he'd be stuck here forever. "can you see her?" his voice was little. he knew the answer, but something in him wanted this to be happening to someone else. anyone else, anyone who could understand the amount of emotions that he was experiencing, none of them belonging to him, all of them bombarding at his skull. it was difficult to speak - his mouth felt swollen, voice thick. "no. you can't."
it may have been the aura she held, one of tragedy, or perhaps the shock at being faced with the ghosts again after being certain that he was safe here. there were monsters in this forest, yes, but he had never expected this. this attack, lambasting his field of view. he shut his mouth, clenched his jaw. his eyes were growing darker, but he didn't take his eyes off her. his hands were getting colder, his head swimming, but he didn't move. the flag clattered to the ground. the scythe did, too. something was shining above in the top half of his eyes - and if he looked up, he would have seen the projected image of an inverted torch. he was being claimed and he couldn't even revel in it.
he didn't feel himself fall to his knees, but when he blinked, refocused his vision, finally free of the trap the ghost had set him, he was in the dark.

now on total and complete guard, orin made a show of spinning, looking for any movement, any change. the ramping up of the wind hindered his ability to listen closely for changes - every rustle of leaves against the breeze had his head spinning in their direction, only to find that it was down to nature. he would have to have a word with his father later.
then again, this didn't feel like his father's wind. a strange thing, to recognise something like that, but it felt more biting - more intentional, like someone was manifesting this for a gain that was unbeknownst to him. for a brief moment, he considered the prophecy. the storm broken. this certainly qualified as a storm.

he shook his head, getting back into the game, so to speak, and found, upon hearing the sound of foot to rock, the daughter of hades staring at the flag that had fallen to the ground. "oh... no..." he said, dragging the words out. a grin glimmered. "did you think... oh, really? you thought that - oh, that is quite funny, isn't it? really, if you think about it, that is... that is quite hilarious. i mean, wow." her camouflage faltered just enough for him to get a solid view of her, a focus that would not be swayed by the perception filter of shadows she had been blessed with by her not-quite-heavenly father. "you do have to laugh. or clap. clapping works."

boasting aside, he flipped the dagger in his grip, stepped forward toward her. "so, come on. let's have a good match. i want a fair fight. nothin' on the face. that's my most prized asset. but the rest - well, most of the rest - that's fair game. i don't want to have to frogmarch you to the jail without knowing that you did your best. did your best after being grandly deceived, though. epically deceived."

The question was taken out of her hands when the boy started rambling, then fell to his knees. Gods, help us! She flipped her knife away into a wing on the pendant, then she was on her knees beside him, reaching an arm to gently touch his shoulder. The glow above his head meant something, but now was not the time. They shouldn't have done that to him

"We'll get you to a medic," She said, working an arm under his shoulder. Crap, he's dead weight.
"A little help, Jamie? We can let the other guards know we're ducking out for a bit. She said, putting on a brave face for those around her. She glanced back up at his claiming, but she frowned when she didn't recognize the glowing symbol. Oh well, I'll just describe it to Chiron or someone with more experience, she thought, her eyes landing on his fallen weapon. They might as well take his scythe with them too, as the Ares cabin was known for cleaning up any spoils of the game.

Aydan Tags: Hank and Val Location: Forest Team: 2

Aydan could tell he peaked Hanks intrest once the girl was mentioned. "She had long dark hair and pale skin, she didn't say who she was related to but she did something to move the snow so we could see and speak to each other. She wasn't a very cheerful person." he said casually. He couldn't speak much about her lack of cheer since he wasn't much of a cheerful person either. When Hank agreed to his plan of snow coverage he took in a deep breath that stung a bit and concentrated on the wind and snow. He closed his eyes so he could concentrate more, he could feel icy wind blow all around him and the sting of icy wind giving him wind burn to his nose and cheeks. "Is it working?" he asked Hank. Aydan couldn't see it but snow was starting to come down harder and was twirling around fiercely as if someone had just shaken the camp in a snow globe. Aydan could feel pressure starting to build up in his head and he knew after he held this long enough for the game he'd probably pass out. He was doing good so far but hadn't practiced this power for long term use yet so he was definitely straining himself. Even so he didn't bring this up to Hank or Val, he just kept working through it as walked mostly steady.

Jamie Wallace|16|he/him|Iris|Forest, real flag|tags:CTF group, Ophelia, Teilo|Team 1
Jamie exchanged a concerned glance with Ophelia, watching Teilo closely as he seemingly stared at nothing. He squinted at the spot the boy was staring towards but there was nothing there. Something was definitely wrong. He opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off by Teilo asking if they could ‘see her’. He didn’t know who he was talking about, there was nobody else there. The other boy seemed to be swaying on his feet and Jamie stepped forward beside Ophelia, prepared to help if he fell. He shoved his knife back into it’s sheath, not as wary of traps as his fellow guard and immediately assuming he wouldn’t need it.

His eyes widened as a glowing symbol appeared above the boys head. He was being claimed, but Jamie didn’t recognize the symbol, and this wasn’t usually what people looked like or how they acted when their claiming happened. Momentarily distracted, he didn’t have time to react when Teilo fell to his knees. He stood frozen for a moment, too stunned to move, but Ophelia’s sharp command snapped him out of his daze. He shook his head and stepped forward, hooking one of the boys arms around his shoulders and helping to haul him to his feet. Ophelia seemed to be trying to maintain a calm expression, though he doubted anyone could really be calm in a situation like this. At this point, Jamie wasn’t even trying to hide the fear on his face, he just wanted to get Teilo to the medic and for everything to be okay.

Augusta Reynolds|17|she/her|Hades|Forest, Zeus’ fist|tags:CTF group, Orin, Maria|Team 2
Auggie stared at the fake flag in disbelief, her jaw clenched tightly. How could she have fallen for such a stupid trick? Her grey-blue eyes drifted to the boy who was now blabbering on, clearly quite proud of his little stunt. She could take his cockiness down a notch. She gave him a cold stare, her eyes blazing with fury as he continued babbling mindlessly. She could hear a rush in her ears that should have been concerning, should have been the first warning sign, but she was too angry to pay any attention to it. She sheathed her sword and slid gracefully down from the rocks, barely landing on her feet before she was stepping towards Orin with her knives in her hands. She shoved him back hard against a tree, one of her freshly sharpened blades held to his throat.

“You’re right,” She seethed through gritted teeth, her tone dripping with sarcasm and her face much too close to his. “Your pretty face is the only thing you’ve got going for you, since there’s clearly nothing behind it. It would be a real shame if someone were to scratch it up.” She pressed her blade to his throat a little harder, not enough to cause a gash, but almost enough to draw blood. Her hands were starting to feel cold, but not from the snow or the frigid wind. Both of her hands were turning blue and frost was forming on her fingers; the one power she hadn’t revealed to anyone else at camp, and the one that she had absolutely no control over was beginning to show itself.

|Mirabelle Everhart|17|She/Her|Aphrodite|Head Counselor|Location: Forest; River Boundary|Team 1|Tags: Gwendolyn (mentioned)|

As Mirabelle traversed the treacherous rocks, the hairs on the back of her neck rose up. Someone's watching me. She paused, swiveling her head around to see if she could spot the culprit. That was her crucial mistake. When turning, she'd moved her left foot without thinking. The icy rock caused her foot to slip, sending her stumbling. She waved her arms in a rather ungraceful movement, heart racing as she desperately tried to regain her balance.
If not for her heavy armour, she may have just been able to make it. The celestial bronze weighed her down, throwing her movements off ever so slightly. It was just enough to send her careening over the edge.
The shock of frigid water hitting her body sent Mirabelle's head reeling. The spot they had picked to cross had seemed shallow at first, but was quite a bit deeper than expected. She came up sputtering, only to be dragged back down by the weight of her metal helmet and breastplate. Desperate to get to the surface, she threw her helmet off and swam towards the surface.
Cold air filled her lungs as she broke through, gasping for air. She managed to wrap her arms around one of the slippery rocks. Some of the Nemesis campers tried to offer help, but it was all they could do to keep from ending up in Mirabelle's situation.
There's no way I can pull myself up onto a rock; it's much too slippery, she realised. Though her limbs were quickly numbing and her teeth had started to chatter, Mirabelle was still determined to keep playing. Perhaps foolishly so. Hardening her resolve, the Aphrodite head counselor started to swim towards the opposite bank, using the rocks to keep from fully submerging once more.

|Juliet Pratten|16|She/Her|Hermes|Location: Forest|Team 2|Tags: Aggie|

"Don't worry, we will," Juliet assured the younger girl as she sculpted the snowman's middle. With that done, she draped the armour she'd filched from the Armoury over its snowy form. "I'm building a decoy. With any luck, no one will be able to tell the difference with all the snow coming down." It was practically pouring from the sky, she realised. Man. Must've picked up while I was distracted. A sharp wind blew through the trees, howling like a wounded beast. Despite her fluffy coat, Juliet shivered. Maybe Chiron should've cancelled after all. Still, there was a game to win. The daughter of Hermes quickly rolled a head out of snow, and placed it atop the armoured snowman. "There." She stuck the battered sword into one of it's twiglike arms, packing it with snow as to stick there. "Now, all we gotta do is wait. I'll head off and hide in those bushes -" she pointed towards a clump of nearby plants. "Can you take those ones over there?" She pointed to the undergrowth on the opposite site. "When someone comes nearby, they'll charge the snow-camper with any luck. Then, we can pelt them with snowballs. Pack some ice and rocks in there toom if you find any." She grinned. "If there are a lot of them, keep low. They won't be able to tell where it's coming from. The Ares kids are so brick-headed that they might even start fighting themselves. If - no, when that happens, they'll be totally open to attack. They'll never see it coming." She raised her eyebrows at Aggy, hoping the other girl followed along.

Chuck waved goodbye as Niji headed out into the snow. Man, hopefully he'll be okay. He nearly jumped out of his skin when Aiden said his name. Dude, like, get a grip! he mentally chastised himself. "Yeah man, like, what's shakin?" he replied. The satyr listened intently as Aiden aired his concerns, eerily quiet for a change. He felt his own anxiety about the questing demigods rear it's ugly head, but he tried his best to subdue it. "Look man," he stated softly. "I'm not gonna lie to you. It can be pretty gnarly out there." He reached out and placed a hand on Aiden's shoulder, hoping his touch would be reassuring. "But like, from what I've heard, they're like, a tough bunch." His stomach dropped at the mention of Mira. The thought of her never returning to camp... True, unadulterated fear flashed in his mossy green eyes for a moment. "Like, Mira'll be okay, you know?" Chuck was aware that his voice was shaking a bit, but there wasn't really anything he could do about it. He sounded more as if he was trying to convince himself than anyone else. "I've been on a quest or two with her before. She's like, a lot tougher than she looks. She can handle... well, she's handled like, a lot of stuff." His nervous gaze flickered to the side. He didn't want to give away all that his friend had been through - as far as he knew, there were things she hadn't told anyone that he'd been privy to. "Like, anyways, she'll be fine," he bleated. "They all will. Like, if Mira's going, they'll have no shortage of supplies, at least. That girl is like, totally prepared for anything." I hope. Chuck left the last words unspoken, but his trepidation certainly showed on his face. If there was anything he was good at, it certainly wasn't hiding his emotions.
