back to the basics wrote: several moons passed since pigeonheart’s exile. blastclaws was able to visit the moonpool in peace with viperstrike in order to gain his leadership name, and was named blaststar, and despite his pleas, starclan did not answer any questions on pigeonheart and the murders.
flintpaw was eventually named flintstorm, in honor of his original mentor. peace began to restore to riverclan and it’s 5 inhabitants, but this was all to the murderer’s plan. they needed riverclan to settle down, to trust each other. they knew that despite pigeonheart being exiled, there would be tension between everyone; there’d be little trust.
and so, when cranewing was asked to go for a dusk stroll, she thought nothing of it. she happily accompanied her clanmate, glad that life was returning to normal. she missed ottersnap, the two had bonded well together. he was mottlestar’s son, afterall, and being mentored by him felt like quite the honor. her head clouded with grief as she left the camp.
the murderer felt a tingle in their body, excited to get back to work. the last few moons felt like eons, and they were more than eager to finish what they started. as cranewing and the cat moved through the forest, they sensed the she-cat’s sensitivity. she seemed sad, and was more distant now than she was when they left the camp together.
“what’s wrong?” they asked her, moving closer to the young warrior. they knew what was wrong, of course.
“just… thinking of ottersnap, of everyone, really. it’s still hard to think that pigeonheart really could’ve done all that,” she replied, keeping her eyes focused on her paws. she didn’t want her partner to know how hurt she was; she needed to be strong. the two cats then continued to walk in silence, and soon arrived to the oh-so familiar lake.
cranewing watched the water gentle lap at the shore. nobody would’ve even know two cats had died here moons earlier, so brutally murdered by a cat they trusted. she closed her eyes, letting out a deep sigh. she felt her chest clutch. this was the first time she really gave herself time to grieve.
“i’ve avoided the lake for moons now,” cranewing admitted, “i didn’t want to see this area. it’s hard to come to terms with it.” she stayed drawn back from the water, and looked at the cat she had gone with. they nodded as she spoke, feigning understandment. they stood and walked to the shore, flashbacks of their original murder coming to their mind.
they waded into the water, glancing back at cranewing. “you outta come to the water. it may help you grieve with what happened,” they called out, hoping cranewinf would fall into the trap.
she weighed the pros and cons of the offer. she eventually got to her paws and walked to the shore. one way or another, she had to get over the death of her mentor. she closed her eyes and slid into the water, pelt spiking as emotions washed over her.
this was their chance. the killer moved to cranewing while her eyes were closed. they pushed her under, and the she-cat quickly reacted. she thrashed in the water, confusion, shock, and terror flooding her brain and body. the attacker kept her under, and dodged as cranewing attempted to slash their face. no, they would not let her give them an identifier.
cranewing began to slow down as the oxygen left her body. she understood now what ottersnap faced, what terror and pain he endured in his last moments. she tried to look at her killer through the water, her eyes glaring in hatred before soon growing dull. the life was squeezed out of poor cranewing.
her attacker drug her to shore, dropping the soaked body on the shore for all to see. they shook their pelt and groomed themselves, needing to dry themselves the best they could before returning to riverclan. the job was almost done.
riverclan… you’re down to 4 cats. if you don’t exile them now, you’re doomed to fail.
