Skylar's expression was nearly as unreadable as Samuel's was. She appeared a bit more taken aback than he was, her eyes doe-like and startled, whereas his was monotonic and blank. His dark eyes followed her twitching hands, raising an uninterested brow as a glimmer of magic dazzled above her palm for a second or so before disintegrating into mid-air. He wasn't proud of his immediate family and their ways of socialization, but he did admit he was glad he had become so bombproof when it came to both internal emotions and words. Her momentarily scowl went right over his head. Scowls and narrowed eyes were what Samuel was most familiar with, after all. It didn't upset him. Surprisingly enough, her lips curved upward into a small smile, and although Sam was unsure if it was completely fake or sincerely genuine, he allows his own to twitch into a tight-lipped smile for a millisecond.
"Most certainly not," he muttered. "Although I do think they should have their fun for the first little bit." His words held double-meaning, and anyone who knew Samuel long enough to know his rather miserable childhood would know such a thing. In his eyes, he considered the newcomers the children, the ones who played to learn. Now that he had learned to relax- as much as "relaxed" went in the Malfrid family- he really did wish as a child he had learned to loosen up and have more fun. It would have made his first few years at the camp much more enjoyable.
A twitch in the eye acted out at her last bit of words. Samuel knew she was only joking, but it felt like a slap to his face. The grumpy boss nobody liked. That was exactly what he had considered his parents to be, but ten times worse. Clearing his throat, Samuel tipped his chin up ever-so-slightly, right-handed fingers gripping his left wrist a bit tighter than necessary. "In that case, I think it's best to leave you to do your thing, even if my reassurance makes me seem like the better person." His dark eyes connected with hers, and although he wasn't angered, the look on his face silently told her that he was being serious when it came to the jokes. "Take it easy on them. They don't need to have a miserable first day." His gaze remained unwavering and intense for a second longer, then he stepped around her, and with a slight tip of his head, he left her to her own devices, deciding to aimlessly head elsewhere for the time being.
