The above from Div is correct! When things are reported they're brought to our immediate attention. This answer may come across vague but that's really all there is to it, lol. I promise there's no conspiracy regarding which users are affected, it's just whichever topics are seen first.
(I don't have any answers for any other questions I've seen at the moment but relevant staff members will be along to reply when they can ^^)

I have two theories regarding why everything suddenly got locked:

From what ive heard, some users will target a certain artist and then go and report everything that might break a rule. Or, someone just, really, really, does not like off oekaki art and off oekaki c4c entries, like you said.

either way, that would be a pretty scummy user ngl

Apologies, I had to shower and do a couple chores to prepare for bed, because I work tomorrow. I'm back with you guys for now.

from what desmond has said, it sums up to the fact of time and the post being reported
of course you have to go back through the form, as this has been,, vaguely i’m my opinion, addressed

Yeah, as I've said, we're only a handful of volunteers with jobs and school and lives outside of CS, we don't get to see everything. What we do see gets taken care of, but a fair part of it slips notice. That's where reporting comes in - users who report rulebreaking content that they see seriously help us out.

Yeah, the answers posted haven't really cleared it up for me, and I just kinda decided that "the mods say it is, so it is."

Bumping is fine, as long as it's not done too often. We do take action on bump spam.
The Oekaki is meant for art drawn on the Oekaki. Art drawn elsewhere belongs in another part of the boards, and there have been a few suggestions as to how to help gain visibility for artists in that board, since they don't enjoy the luxury of being visible from the board page view, and that's been a large reason people post non-Oekaki art on the Oekaki boards, thus breaking that rule.

So drawings can be locked right? But...is there a reason why theres usually no warning given before the thread is locked?
I definitely can see it being on the side of taking too much time to warn someone since for that one person theres 20 other people doing the exact same thing. But I feel like locking someone whos unknowing and making them unable to retreive that art without a help ticket is a bit unfair and might need some addressing- esspecially since every art peiece is perceeved differently by everyone who looks at it.

In cases like these, there's a couple reasons. A quick reason is the sheer amount of reports we may get, as you said. We may also lock a drawing because the amount of work required to make a thread follow our rules is far too much to ask -- we don't like the idea of demanding that people redraw an entire art piece just to put it on an Oekaki canvas so it can be in that board. That's a lot of work. We get it.

I just had this idea, but in response to desmond's idea of the thread preview, another addon maybe some sort of way to like a post or react to it with the emojis? even if just in the art threads
it's been suggested a lot, but i think it'd be useful
i imagine it could work like polls and be at the top of the thread. Or, at the bottom at the post (where the editing the post goes, mayhaps??) It'd be a lot easier and a good feature to add. We already do have a way to like oekaki posts, so something maybe even as simple as that.

I think the oekaki / chickenpaint itself of course needs more features and an update, but i'm not sure how that would work out. We really only have one coder, (Nick), and haven't gotten an update to chickenpaint. I think an update to it could cause less off-oekaki art on oekaki posts and help the artist and oekaki artist population, but i'm not sure entirely how coding works. I imagine it'd have to be tested and everything.

(which, does, however lead me back to my point about possibly hiring/getting another coder. I think it could be extremely beneficial, but only tess and nick can make that decision)

I feel like This whole situation has escalated quite a bit,, if it has a cover that has a sketch or drawing not just writing or arrows showcasing the adopt/drawing should be fine cause it was quite fine for years and now things are being locking for reasons that weren’t this huge of an issue until now.

I agree with locking drawings for regular things but for the c4c thing and other challenges I feel as though rules should be bent so everyone can participate. everything is just extreme now with the locking of all drawings even if they have a drawing cover,, the oekaki is the only program I use but for others it is limiting to what they have and if they can’t participate it just makes it hard and trapping

Apologies if this has already been said bc I honestly skimmed 90% of this thread, but a primarily off-oekaki artist and as a newer user (I joined just over two years ago, I believe), I wasn't even aware that the off-oekaki/art gallery/whatever they're called forums existed. So I don't think it's far that off-oekaki artists should have to be confined to the desert of the site just because the art program provided is borderline unusable if you work on mobile/don't have a tablet/browser that oekaki happens to like.

When I am looking for adopts to spend my c$ on, I go directly to the oekaki boards as where else can something catch my eye enough that I click on it/I get a preview of what I'm potentially buying.

As a primarily mobile user as well, I'm very rarely in the forums if I'm not setting up a thread of an arpg (and now I use toyhou.se for hosting my characters, so honestly I'm never in forums anymore.

wow..... i just read through the whole thread, a couple of things i want to add as someone who has been drawing for years but only started using oekaki very very recently

- the non oekaki forums related to art are pretty inactive and clunky to navigate. when i started posting things like adoptables and art on oekaki i was shocked by how much attention they got compared to art i used to post on the text forums. a lot of people have said this is because oekaki forums are a lot more visually helpful and cleaner to navigate than other forums in regards to art, and i definitely agree. at the very least i agree with desmond that a visual preview section or something needs to be added to text forums, which honestly is like a first step compared to how much easier to navigate oekaki posts are

- i am more concerned that the lock feature is applied to art without immediate ability to take a picture of the art or save it (without submitting a help ticket, but those take a while to get replied to and i have seen some people in the thread say they haven't gotten a picture of their back even after a ticket). this is i understand a new feature meant to show that mods have done something about the post without clicking on it directly but this is as simple as only displaying the lock on the thumbnail and not the actual art in the post. the rule about off-oekaki art that the lock is in place to address i mostly agree with, it's the not being able to access art with the huge lock that i think is not a good way of handling things at all.

-i'm very glad some of the mods have made an effort to talk to the community in this thread, i know this is a holiday but i think this is an important issue that needs to be addressed and im glad people are having a discussion about it

Honestly I'd prefer if staff members did something like this this more often instead of locking something;
In this screenshot, you can clearly see an oekaki piece, but if you look at the forum, it shows it's not in the oekaki threads, but in the adoptable forums.

Clicking the image will bring you here, moving the art piece to a place where it doesnt "break rules" but also notifying the artists followers of an artpiece. Maybe if the piece is "colored in" itll still show an image until you click on it and itll link to the character adoption forums.
It would be so nice to be able to submit our thread into that forum in the same way a staff member is doing it to this art piece.

My least favorite part about moving "covered" adopts & designs to the forums is there would be no notification for the artists art or designs, it wouldnt show up in the oekaki feed and unless you stalk the character design forum you might never see it!

Also, please clean up the design art forums, the one forum is so hard to navigate, it should be separated into atleast 3 ways; character design shops (for custom made characters), character folder trades & sales (like advertising your toyhouse or sta.sh for trade), and one-off adopts for the oekaki "covered" adopts. So you can have as many adopts as youd like and you dont have to recycle the same thread over and over- itd keep your posts neat like oekaki ones do.

Adding into this even though Desmond answered it above, why aren’t the ‘give me a palette, get a character’ Oekakis considered spam? Usually when one is posted the recent drawings are filled with these. I genuinely don’t mind them, but if I did then I would find them more of a nuisance then the off Oekaki art! Most of the time there isn’t even art on it!
