Background: maybe a dark turquoise? unless it's possible to do a very simple somewhat water based background, or the colour blends too much with him, then do whatever works as long as its a cool/cold colour

Anything Else?: if he isn't doable would i be able to switch characters? also his eyes go from a dark blue to a dark green (top to bottom, gradient), and aren't just pure black
