Ive decided after thinking on it for most of this year to start looking at “flipping” horses. There are a lot of cheap, well built, and healthy projects by me and ive been wanting to get one now for some time. I have two horses of my own that are on my own property, but id have to board a third as I dont have the best space to train in and for other reasons.
I bought my horse green and have trained her to ride tackless and she moves off of pressure very nicely. The other mare i dont do much with, she just gets to be a horse most of the time. Shes an arab and very hot so most of what i do with her is desensitizing. Shes a great trail horse.
I also when i was taking lessons would ride and help train my trainers green babies and she had some real problem horses. Not sure why she bought them for a lesson program tbh :lol:
Anyways my point is i have experience and am pretty efficient as long as i can spot a good horse out.

I have a couple questions though.
Im thinking buy grade-at least the first one? The idea of papers stresses me out. There are some cheaper registered horses but let me know. I know papered brings in more $$ but im not sure if thats the type of horse i could produce?

Also, how do you buy a project? I am not sure what to expect. I wanted to rescue when I was looking for my personal horse, they let me ride and we talked a while. It was a very chill shelter that had me meet her and walk and trot her around in a field. I dont really care how a green horse initially rides, my pony was a wreck when i tried her ofc and after training shes amazing. Can i just go to see their temperament and how they handle on the ground? Or watch someone else ride them?

Any other information or tips would be great. I would love a winter project and the barn i have in mind is very lowkey. I am out literally in all kinds of weather especially if i have an indoor arena. I go when its almost too cold to go. Even without cover so its reasonable for me to get one in the winter and that is not an issue.

I can go into depth of what skills id train if someone can help me with general pricing. They vary a lot around here, I personally have never ridden a finished horse. The closest one i have is my own pony who has a lot of buttons but idk what qualifies for finished. So to ME comparatively she is worth a lot if she didnt have poor confo
Thank you in advance for any help and advice!!

Hi there! I looked into this very recently (two friesian mares) and actually decided against it.

My biggest concern was the risk of the horse NOT selling, for whatever reason (lack of a market, recession, injury, etc.). Would you be able to shoulder the loss, if you had to pay the expenses for the horse for longer than you'd anticipate? Or forever? For me, the answer was no, so I didn't go through with it.

I'm not going to pick a side either way, but I'd caution you to be aware of ALL the risks, especially of working (on the ground as well as under saddle) with an under-trained, green horse. I had the skill, the time, the supervision and the support to do it all, but ultimately the risk of ending up with one or both mares unsellable for whatever reason, and needing all of their expenses paid, put me off much more than it would have if I'd be looking to buy a personal horse.

The previous answer is very correct and always something to consider.
We just sold my horse who was initially bought as a project, but we ended up keeping him until we had to sell for personal reasons. I had the support system and knowledgeable people to help me out, so we took into great consideration what kinds of horses are in demand and aren’t for our discipline (eventing and hunters, some differences but we got a horse that could go either way). Because we kept this in mind and with some luck, he sold to the first people who tried him and our large horse facility neighbos said they wished they acted faster!
Aside from a personal anecdote, I definitely suggest browsing horse sales pages and seeing what other horses are selling for, and what kinda get people interest. You sound like you can pick a good horse, which is a great place to start! Know what build and temperament your discipline wants. Though if you’re in an English discipline and want any advice regarding that I can offer my two cents.
We tried tons of project horses, and that process just depended on How green the horse was. A few we just looked at on the ground (fresh OTTBs), and some I got to w/t/c and do some cross rails. Depends on what youre looking at. One pony was a monster and we decided against even trying it after we watched someone else ride, so I’d recommend watching the owner ride them first lol. Do what you’re comfortable with!
Because we ended up keeping our project, we didn’t profit overall after grain vet etc. but if you can flip that horse quickly you definitely can! I’ve watched the process of a low 4 figure purchase be trained and sold in the 5 figures (usd) with profit!

Id look for a sound horse with a sound mind, and a cute face helps too

Edit- I don’t know anything about papers, but everyone I know has done fine flipping horses without them : )

Hi! I was wondering what experiences people have had with the GreenGuard and Flexible filly grazing muzzles are. Preferably from someone who has had both, but I would welcome any input. Especially if there was anything you didn’t like.

I have two horse size boys who are getting rubbed with the regular nylon basket type muzzles. Plus I don’t like how heavy they get when wet and how they start to smell pretty quickly. Neither of them are escape artists and they’ll wear the muzzle pretty willingly.

Really hoping to get some input before spending another chunk of money. Thanks!

( let me know if this is not the right group for this )

        @northfalls
        personally haven't had any experience with greenguard but i did buy one a few months ago, just haven't had to use it yet. several people at the farm i board it use it though, and they absolutely rave about it! i imagine rubs would still be a problem, especially if you have a nylon halter or keep the muzzle on for long periods of time, but ime duct tape does the trick quite well. don't have any experience with the other brand, i've only ever used the shires muzzles haha

        competed beginner novice for the first time yesterday! actually my 6th time out competing with this horse but due to one reason or another we hadn't actually done all three phases until today haha. had an atrocious dressage test with a score of 38 - somehow i forgot half of the test? but i'm happy knowing that if i hadn't messed up i would have gotten a 32 - and clear stadium and cross country (which has never been a problem for us but i'm still happy :)) to finish in third. just a nice experience :) he's a 19yr old appy gelding showing me the ropes of eventing as i've really only been able to ride green/problem horses for the past few years (with the possible exception of mr tb, although due to his genetic condition leading to some unfortunate events he still ended up being a bit of a problem haha). nice change of pace for me at least! hoping to bump up to novice by the end of next season, not sure if we'll go training as he and his owner were never able to go clear when he was younger but we could definitely do a few combined tests.

Is it ok to cry over a pony i sold 3 months ago? Im feeling very conflicted by this. Its only just now hitting me that she's really gone. I regret not working with her more, and i had gotten attached to her without realizing it. She wasnt anything special so im not sure why i feel so upset about this. Is it because i got attached? was it her personality? I cant figure out why im so upset about it after 3 months of her being gone. I regret taking her for granted and letting her waste away instead of working with her and getting her to her full potential. If i could get her back, i would in a heartbeat. She wiggled her way into my heart and selling her left a small void that no other horse can replace. She took 2 hours just to get her into the trailer. I think that was her trying to tell us she wasnt ready to leave, and nobody listened to her. The people are very lucky to have such a sweet, smart, goofy little pony. I hope she's doing well in her new home and i hope they're treating her the way she deserves <3

@Deku_is_best_boi
it is perfectly okay to feel that way. I feel that way about certain horses that I have ridden or worked with.

I know for me I worked at a theraputic riding faciltiy and it was so hard not to get attached to the horses there because they eventually would get retired and leave. I did, however, get attached to this crabby, 22 year old QH gelding. He only liked certain people and I was lucky enough to be able to be one of the people that he liked (he would try and bite other people when you were grooming him which led to not a lot of volunteers wanting to work with him). I used to go in extra early so I could spend time grooming (since it took about 30 min. because you would have to go slow) and stretching him. He got retired a handful of months ago and it is still hard. Sadly because of covid I did not get to say one last goodbye. I still remember the last day that I saw him. I walked him out to the pasture and said "love you see you soon" and gave him a hug.

Re: Do You Ride Horses? V.4

Postby sundae cat » Tue Nov 10, 2020 11:04 pm

I've been riding for the past 5 years but I haven't been since January as I wasn't in the best state and I was too trapped in my own head to ride properly, I almost rode straight into a pillar at one point.

My friend recently got a beautiful thoroughbred named Archie and she's keeping him at the yard we have lessons at but nearly all the lesson horses have been sent to another yard until lessons start again which won't be until next year at least.

Not being able to get to the yard and knowing that every day my friend is going down to do whatever she wants with her horse breaks my heart, every time I see a horse I can't stop myself from crying and two of my other friends also have horses, one has five.

I just wish that my parents would actually consider getting me a horse because I'll be able to start work very soon so they wouldn't have to pay for too long and my step dad has already more or less taught me how to drive so once I'm at the legal age I can go get my license without having to take too many lessons so they won't even have to leave me at the yard for long either.

I live out in the countryside surrounded by fields and the original plan was that once I start work I could keep a horse in once of the fields and build a small stable in my garden (which is big enough, it used to be a farm) but since the farmer's dog attacked my dog and the farmer still hasn't installed the electric gate he promised us years ago I don't think him and our family are on good terms.

The yard that I hope to board my future horse at has really good facilities and the owner is always giving my friend tips on how to train her horse as he is only a 5 year old and still a bit green.

In the future I want to go to the nearby horse university with my friend and we may go into business together, if that doesn't work out I'll just become an art teacher but still work with horses in my spare time to earn some extra cash.

I've already added up the cost of a horse and how much I would make working at a part time job and I'm pretty sure I would be able to afford it once I get a job and I'm already saving.

@Hime
Did you ever think about other competition with Ty? :D
driving, jumping, dressage, endurance , trail or real long rides:?:
... or give him to a Trainer or go together, for some full out each day Training..for 1-4weeks? no trot or canter only tolt and pace till he got it. (we once got some nice guy from iceland in our old stable....he was a great rider...a bit to much sometimes for some horses at the beginning, and did ride all the horses he had to ride each day for some h...the farrier had to do more or less new shoes each day as they gone so thin after some day....but the horses there where never more fit and happy and working in all gaits... :lol: )
some horses can learn to tolt and pace without rider or in front of a Sulky/cart...

or selling him to someone where tolt i not needed as they would like a nice trail horse for long rides where he can use his temper and energy....? and buy a 4-5 gaited horses who like to go more tolt a lot ;)

And you still got his younger sister to think about? she needs lot of training and some competition, to be a future broodmare some day...when you think she really is good enough to make good foals.

Did you alreay safe some $1000th for it? you always need to think like this ...half year of money for care and stable of horse and vet-farrier-dentist, some more for new things, and enough money for when it is hurt or sick...

also.... did you also think about the car you need to drive there and all what you have to pay.... :?: also when it got problems,.... and when horse is sick, hurt and all that too? who will take care of the horse when you are sick, working, School, traveling??

that with building your own Little stable and field and Paddock...is all well and nice, and good when it works....
but then you have to think about even more things...Food, water, shelter on pasture, fence shecking each day, you Need a fence where Dogs cant get in when you got one aggressive near you....also you Need to get 2 horses, as you never Keep just one,...what do you do when one is hurt or lost shoe, when they destroyed something, do you know what plants an trees are bad for them and how to destroy them or Keep away from horses...you Need to clean them two times a day, a good farrier, vet, .....manure and pasture and paddock managment..inurance for horse and stable...how to protect from fire, where to keep food for half a year .....and again who will take care of horses when you cant or want too....like raining for weeks or snowing....and so on...you always Need to take care of them alone most of the time or find help.....

so why no wait till the lesson horses come back... :?:
or learn more about horses and alll around them , till then.....there are alway lessons you can take online...
....or ask the friend with the 5horses if they like help with them, like groundwork, cleaning stall and horse, walking it and one day even riding...

What ever you do i wish you good luck, maybe you get a horse one day^^
and that it works with the horse university with your friend and going into business together, or you become an art teacher...nice to keep second way open... ;) . good luck and work hard on dream, then it can work out and when you only go riding :) .
