The Forest Banshees

They all live in a mediocre size camp. Not big but not really to small. All of the dens are made from old tree leaves and branches. The floors try to use as much moss as possible but during different times, sometimes they will have to sleep without it. The only dens that always get moss are the elders, just for extra protection. In the middle of camp there is a huge tree with all of its branches burnt off. It is great for sharing messages through The Forest Banshees.

They hunt in a long strip of area full of trees. Animals have been seen to thrive there, so it’s just where they have hunted forever. The rabbits live in small groves, the birds live in low nests, and the deer live pretty much everywhere.

They heavily rely on rabbits and deer to get them through their lives, even considering they are easy to get, compared to other animals. All of the clan thinks they taste great so it was an obvious decision on what they eat.

They don’t really relay on cats or mice for food. The cats always taste gross and they can be hard to get considering they have the ability to fight back if wanted. One other food that they can’t rely on is mice. They are way too small and are way too bitter for the dogs, but like everything else, they might not be able to have first picks.

Most of the dogs in the clan can be very spiteful. They are very secretive and sneaky especially when trying to get their way. But some can also be very nice and helpful. Though they are rare, they exist. They will mostly help out with the elders and den mothers, but there is no such thing as too much help in their eyes.

The most common breeds are golden retrievers and any big types of dogs. They just seem to survive better in leaf-bare and such. There are less medium dogs like akitas and fox terriers but once again, they are still there. The least common dogs are the smallest like pappions, yorkies, and maltese.

Their ancestors will send proficiencies most commonly through a weird system of dreams called ‘Star Marks’. The ancestor(s) will come up to the dog and talk to them. Sometimes great news like a relative of theirs has made it over to them or a huge rain will come for the plants. But, there is always the possibility that they can be bad, as if like a drought will come or something unfortunate will happen.


The dogs do have one but they really don’t express it. They kind of worship the Greek gods like Zues and Persephone. They will either go to their ancestors or to the gods for their help on what to do. But after few days of getting nothing back, they go to the special den far from camp they call ‘The Ancestral Den’.

It is currently fall. The air grows cooler, and there is a hauntingly familiar chill in the breeze. The trees are a
brilliant array of reds and oranges,a new layer of leaves coating with ground with each passing day. Birds are
migrating to warmer climates, and prey of all kinds are less frequent, growing scarce.
The kennels should expect less prey, higher chance fatalities, more chances of sickness, less dogs discovered
on patrols, less herbs, more difficult birthing, more stillborns, more predators, and more human encounters.

After the ceremony last moon, Martha reflected on her family. Someday, she wasn't going to be around to protect her offspring, so it was important that they all knew each other and could rely on their siblings. Martha walked up to Stark, who was eating his portion of the boar. She sat next to him and he tried not to take notice. Martha spoke up "Hey Stark. It's still weird to call you that name. I was thinking of taking a walk with your siblings later today and wanted to invite you to come with us. It could be a family thing."
Stark stopped gnawing on the bones of his meal and looked at his biological mother. "I'm not interested."
Martha whined and said "But you barely know them. I'm really glad you and Alexander were able to bond some. I almost thought my request would be ignored by the council."
"You requested that I mentored Alexander?!" Stark huffed.
"Well I wanted you to become closer with your siblings."
"I only mentored Alexander because Kalta asked me to. And I listen to my mentor, commander, and beta. Don't go thinking that I did it to get closer to that brat! He's so cocky and thinks he knows everything! He is so difficult to deal with!"
"Don't talk that way about your brother! He was always so excited to show me what he learned from you and he looks up to you." Martha growled. Stark didn't say anything. "And is it too much to ask for you to get to know your other siblings as well? You are family after all."
"Family doesn't mean anything. Being blood related isn't my choice. I didn't choose to have siblings. They aren't my responsibility."
"You are the oldest. You have a responsibility to care for then whether you like it or not! When I'm gone, you will be all they have left!"
Stark glared at his mother in disgust. "What about the kennel?! Does this kennel mean anything to you? While you were running around with your mate and having the time of your life, I was left abandoned in the cold! When Brutus found me and brought me here, I found my actual family! Stella raised me, Brutus was like a father to me, and Kalta taught me everything I know. All while you forgot I existed and raised your new litter like I was nothing!"
"Stark! I told you that your father and I were being hunted! The dog pack already killed your sister and I couldn't risk them getting you too! I was going to come back for you when it was safe, but when I returned you were gone. I never meant to abandon you!" Martha cried. She tried to rub against Stark but he jumped away.
"Tell it like it is Martha! You and your mate crossed into kennel territory and were stealing prey from the kennel. When they found you two they chased you off their territory. You left me behind because you could only carry one pup! Brutus saw it all. You chose to leave me behind!" Stark looked so powerful standing over his mother growling. His teeth bared in agitation. "You deserved to be run off the territory. Leave me alone!"
Martha stood up and walked away, her tail hanging lowly.
Stark stormed off to find Kalta. She was always there to talk to him. He found Kalta talking with River and Bronze. They walked away and Stark got his mentor's attention. "Kalta, are you available to talk with me?"
Kalta nodded her head and replied "Of course. What would you like to discuss?"
"Martha came up to me and wanted me to get to know her pups."
"Don't call your mother by her name. Give her some respect. "
"Why, all she did for me was give birth."
"And that took many moons of carrying you and your siblings. It's hard being pregnant. Ask any of the pup-mothers. Please give her some respect."
"Fine. But she thinks that she can just show up in my life and order me around. She didn't raise me. And I never asked to have younger siblings to take care of either. Marth- I mean my mother, thinks that because Stella is gone, she can take the role of my mom. Well, she's too late! She had that chance and she blew it!"
"Stark, maybe you should just calm down. Think about it from her perspective. She got a chance to see her pup who she thought was dead moons ago! The ancestors blessed her with this reunion. And she wants to take this opportunity to rekindle her relationship with you. I think you should give her a chance."
"But I don't want to! I hate looking at her! She was just a scavenger, a loner who trespassed and didn't think twice about stealing from kennels. And I bet she stole from many kennels! She deserves what she got. If I was a Guardian instead of a hunter, I would run off any loners trying to steal our prey."
Kalta looked at the ground sadly. "You and Niko have similar views about loners. But most of our members were loners at some point. And they found a home in this kennel, just like you did." She sighed. "I think you should give your mother a chance. She loves you and has only ever wanted the best for you. It's not an order, so you don't have to if you don't want to." Kalta left to talk to the council. Stark was left wondering what he should do.

𝐀 chill in the air brought great discomfort to Aegeus as he struggled to make himself comfortable against Zsofia's warm back. He could hear the muffled sounds of the Maid, Diem, snoring away as Aiken, the Guard, scuffled around his position beside the stones. Surely the ancestors could have granted him a dog that would be able to stand watch without tripping every two seconds? Alas, Aegeus had grown to enjoy the clumsy dog's company and knew that Aiken was one of the best Guards in Isla Gris. The scattered shifting beside him notified Aegeus that Zsofia had awoken. "Aegeus?" The female whispered. "Aegeus why are you up?" The leader sighed, he wished not to share is thoughts with Zsofia, so he said the one thing that he actually enjoyed thinking about. "Zsofia, I have enjoyed your company from the moment we met." Aegeus grumbled. "So I hope you understand when I ask, will you be my mate?" Two large green eyes filled with love peeked out from beneath a mop of grey fur. "Yes."

Rocky smiled as he looked out over his kennel, smiling as he looked at how big it is. There was so many pups, and soon to be promoted, and Syn and Kimber were still expecting. He could see that Lodurr and Hel were connecting well, a large thanks to Gersemi to bring them together. He was glad that Hel was so willing to adopt Gersemi, and that Gersemi's father was found and willing to let Hel keep taking care of Gersemi. He recognized that Gersemi needed a mother, and did not let his worry and loss prevent him from letting her have that.

He watched as his own pups proved that they are an asset to the kennel, and his mate was more that willing to try for more, which he was thinking they would do. He also saw all the budding relationships developing between kennel members, which meant even more pups and a continuation of his kennel.

He left his kennel behind as he walked to where he would talk to his ancestors. He could feel in his bones that there was something big that was going to happen. The walk seemed to talk longer than ever for this trip, but he was not exhausted when he reached his destination. He laid down and closed his eyes, allowing himself to be taken into slumber.

Rocky walked through the forest, hearing a gentle sound of music around him. He looked around carefully, smelling to see what was happening. He could hear voices ahead of him, and followed the sound quickly. He reached a large hall filled with various sized dogs of a variety of species. He carefully approached, only to see a huge mastiff approaching him.

"I see that you finally found your way here, young one." the large dog said.

"Yes, sir. It is an honor to be here with all you great dogs tonight." Rocky responded, "But, I must ask, am I dead?"

The large dog chuckled at his question, "No, no, you are not. This is Valhalla, a restful place for warriors before they move on to Asgard or Helheim. I have brought you here to explain to you what changes need to be made."

"Changes, what do you mean?" Rocky asked.

"You are a group of noble fighting dogs, betrayed by the ones who you thought loved you. You found each other, developed a pack, found love in comradery and family. That is honorable, to rise above your strife and mangled past to become something noble. It is worthy of any Viking today." The large dog explained.

Rocky listened to what he was saying, slowly starting to understand.

"Asgard is the noble heaven for good dogs, while Helheim is the dark underworld where evil dogs go to either repent and join the heavenly warriors or stay in banishment for all eternity. For you to join with our noblility, there will need to be a few changes made. You will no longer be called Ragnarok, as noble of a name as that is, you will now be called Odin. Your kennel shall not be referred to as Nevermore, but now called Nui-Heimer." The large dog said as the two of them walked through the gorgeous place.

He went on to tell more to Rocky, now called Odin, on how to change his kennel for the better. Odin promised to implement the changes immediately, as soon as he returned to his kennel.
