Unfortunately, quality fur really isn't very cheap anywhere, or at least I haven't found any place where it is. If you're looking for stuff that's actually good, you can pretty much expect about $20 per yard at the very least, but that's pretty lucky. Sorry about that! I wish you the best of luck in getting started!

I would save up and get EcoShag fur from BigZFabric. It's the best quality for the price I've seen. Very shiny and soft and shaved down very well. It's around 25$ a yard. You only need a yard or 2 for a fursuit head. I would absolutely recommend saving up for it if you want quality that will last a long time.

I can back up that various makers I know are now preferring EcoShag to luxury shag. BigZ fabrics has a wide selection of average priced furs, HowlFabrics is more expensive and not as big but has rare fur colors if you really need a specific color. FursuitSupplies.com is also a nice site with quite a large fur selection and some limited fursuit building equipment besides just fur, and i'd say they're about average price. Both HowlFabrics and FursuitSupplies.com are run by furries, and BigZ fabric has vended at furry conventions before and seems to be taking community advice to better their fur selection(one of those being the recent upgrade in the EcoShag quality). These seem to be the current top 3 sites to get fur from(in the US at least) and i've hear good things about all of them, and i've bought from FursuitSupplies.com before at a couple of cons ^^

I’m not sure in the context to this thread, but the only requirement to be a furry... is to say you’re a furry. A fan may just be someone who isn’t a furry but appreciates the art/culture/etc.
I am a furry. My mom, however, appreciates my art, thinks fursuits can look cool, etc. but would not consider herself a furry by any means. She’s just a fan.

you've already got a lot of feedback but i would like to add on.
if you have a local joanns, visit there on black friday!!! the fur is 50% off AND if you have the joanns app or mailed in coupons there will often be deals you can apply on top of that 50% off. just please make sure you get nice quality fur. choose the softest stuff they have even if its more expensive. once, on black friday, i believe i got two yards of fur for about $20? the yardage price was normally $40 before the deals (which is way overpriced). but they were really nice fur too... i still have a bit of one. softest fur ive bought so far.
i can also back that bigZfabric is the best online place to buy fur. ive tried their long pile ecoshag, beaver fur, and minky before. their customer service is really nice! only really big issue with the company is you cant get half yards & shipping is a bit pricey so make sure you only make one grand order!
i would also look on instagram, twitter, and the dealers den for scrap fur for sale. you can get a lot for cheap. bigZfabrics also has cheap scrap fur boxes.
