Hawk giggled as he shoved over his brother. "You're it, Lynx!" He called, smiling. He hopped backwards a few paces, ready to run from being tagged.
Lynxpaw rolled his eyes at him. "We're not kits anymore, Hawk. We don't play tag anymore." He hissed.
Blizzardpaw shouldered the stuck up tom. "No, you don't play tag anymore, Chief."
"Better watch yourself, sis, cause when I am chief, I can banish you!" Lynxpaw threatened, grinning wide.

─ This Moon ─

Sagepaw laid in the nest in the shaman's den, boredly looking at the arraignment of herbs. His pelt felt hot, the ocean breeze coming into the cave giving him shivers down his spine. He sat up a bit when his brother, Shiningpaw, trotted into the den.
"You better lay back down before Whitelotus sees you, I'll never hear the end of it." He complained, sighing. He started crushing up some herb with a rock. "Lick this up, it'll cool you off a bit." Shiningpaw ordered.
Sagepaw rolled his eyes, already getting a bit tired of his brother's attitude. However, he was starting to understand how stressful his brother's studies were compared to his own training. He had see the blood that had been coming out of Quietcove after the osprey attack, he didn't even want to know what it was like to have to fix that problem. Shiningpaw had to memorize a million herbs and techniques, Sagepaw felt relieved that his own training was much more interesting. He sighed, licking up the herbs and gulped down the terrible taste. He laid back into his nest, closing his eyes to force sleep.

Clan Tradition:
When an apprentice is ready to become a warrior, they shall go on a week long quest into the Two-Leg territory on the western boarder, where they will look for a monkey by the name of Fitzgerald, and he will make their new clan collar for them. If they succeed then they shall be welcomed back to the clan as a full warrior, if they do not then they will have to train for an additional moon before they are able to try again. If they fail a second time, they are banished from the clan for weakness and a disrespect for clan tradition and law.

"Hey, lemonfoot!"

lemonfoot just about jumped out of their skin, unsheathing their claws and spinning 'round to face—

oh. just mushroomstar.

embarrassed, lemonfoot sheathed their claws and cleared their throat. "hello, mushroomstar. can I help you?"

mushroomstar tipped their head to the left, humming non-committally in what might have been an appropriate reply in a parallel universe.
"not really," they admitted, but smiled nonetheless. "i was just wondering if you wanted to come spar with uhh..." they trailed off and were silent for a moment, mouthing to themselves, before their face lit up again and they spoke. "me, agarictail, and stormfoot!"

lemonfoot dipped their head politely. "yes, of course. thank you for the offer."
"not a problem!" mushroomstar chirped, and trotted off, presumably to the location of the spar, lemonfoot following behind them.

lemonfoot ducked into a clearing along with their leader, and flinched back upon hearing the rather eager greetings of their clanmates.

"hey, lemonfoot!" agarictail said from his place across the clearing. "how's it going?"
"well," lemonfoot said, dipping their head to their deputy. "how are you?"

"good as well," agarictail said, then paused for a moment before turning his head slightly to face mushroomstar.
"hey, mushroomstar. i'm 'fraid I'll have to sit out of this spar. still awful sore from that fox attack."

mushroomstar's smile dropped from their face and their eyes shot wide open. "oh no!" they said, sounding awful alarmed. "should i get babyflop? we have dock and goldenrod and stinging nettle, i think. those are for wounds, right? we might have some other things, too, but i'm not sure—"
"i'm fine," agarictail said, cutting off his leader with a good-natured chuckle. "i've already spoken to her, she said i'm healing just fine."
"thanks to me" stormfoot said, grinning toothily at agarictail.
"yes," agarictail conceded. "thanks to you. in my defence, i was doing alright for myself."
"right," stormfoot said, rolling their eyes. "that's why you were running around and screaming your head off like a headless chicken?"

there was a moment of silence.
"do they really do that?" came agarictail's (extremely hesitant) question.
"who? headless chickens?"
"yes."
"i lived on a farm, i know these things. would i lie to you?"
"yes."
"fair enough. but i'm telling the truth about this, i promise."

agarictail snorted. "yeah, alright. okay. but i couldn't have been screaming like a headless chicken, they can't scream. they don't have heads."
"the heads keep screaming, actually."
"okay, now i know you're lying to me."

after some discussion, the group of them figured out the order they'd go in for the spar.

mushroomstar against stormfoot (stormfoot won)

and then it was mushroomstar against lemonfoot.

things went fine, perfectly normal, until a few minutes into the spar. mushroomstar launched themselves at lemonfoot, tackling the warrior to the ground with a paw placed firmly against either side of their neck.
neck.
blood.
the scent of ash in the air.
the reek of death, the weight of loss on their shoulders

they kicked up, mind flashing with images they never wanted to see again.

they didn't realise until they were already on their feet and staring at a stunned mushroomstar laying on the ground that they were growling, spittle dripping from their gnashing teeth.

they stopped immediately, took a few steps back, then turned tail and ran back to camp.

later that day, mulardnose woke up from their third nap of the day to the uncomfortable truth, that they had...absolutely nothing to do.

with a grumble of frustration, mulardnose dragged themselves to their feet. might as well go for a walk, they thought, stretching and listening to the pop and crack of unused joints. not like there's much else to do.

only minutes into their stroll around camp, however, mulardnose felt their ears prick up at the sound of tense conversation somewhere near then.

in everybody was a thirst for drama. perhaps it was latent, perhaps it emerged as listening to the old wives' tales and half-truths from one's elders, or perhaps it shone through in someone's ability to tell their own stories, true or otherwise.

regardless of how this desire emerged, or how blatant it was, the point remained that everybody had a want for drama. conflict was the spice of life. it made things interesting, made a break from the otherwise dreary uniformity that was life.

all that was to say that mulardnose was a nosey ass, and with nary a moment's hesitation, they dropped to their haunches and listened intently.

they recognised the voices of agarictail, the clan's deputy, and stormfoot, one of their fellow warriors. the two were speaking in hushed tones—not arguing, like mulardnose had thought at first (this, they noted with a twinge of disappointment.) rather, the subject of conversation was a tense one, but they appeared to be agreeing, or mulardnose was positive they would be hearing less of a calm, if terse conversation, and more of a verbal battle, complete with shouting and insults targetted towards the other's mother.

"what do you think that was?" came stormfoot's voice. mulardnose glanced up tentatively, noting that the spotted tabby was pacing around agarictail in a circle, the latter sitting perfectly still on the ground with his eyes shut.
"it's not my place to speak," came agarictail's reply.
"okay," stormfoot said with a long, reluctant sigh. "okay, but, i mean—are they okay? they freaked. hard. should we go after them? i know mushroomstar feels horrible."
"we should wait," agarictail said. "if they're not back by evening, we'll go looking for them, but i think they'll be back before then. let's give them their space, alright?"
"fine," stormfoot said, almost snapping.

the conversation died down somewhat, then, but did not come to a close. mulardnose didn't stick around to hear the end of it, though, instead electing to rise to their feet and trot back to their den, feeling as though they had heard something they were not meant to.

there was stupid, and then there was...whatever the hell that was.

with a groan, lemonfoot flipped over in their nest, squeezing their eyes shut and doing their damn best not to scream their woes to the sky.

stupid, stupid, stupid, they thought, gritting their teeth. you finally find a place you feel safe in and this is what you do? you've ruined it. this tentative peace has been shattered by YOU. stupid, stupid st—

"hey, lemonfoot? you okay?"

lemonfoot yelped and scrambled to their feet, their pelt bristling as they stared down...agarictail. just agarictail.

"hello, yes, im fine." lemonfoot said, and tried to hide the shaking in their voice.
for his part, if agarictail had heard that telltale tremor, he didn't remark on it.

"okay," agarictail said, and flicked his tail in the direction of the centre of camp. "we're eating. you hungry?"
lemonfoot made a noncomittal noise and shifted so they weren't facing agarictail.

"alright," agarictail said. "well, there's always gonna be a spot for you, you know that? ill save you a piece, in case you're hungry later."

lemonfoot's heart swelled as agarictail retreated back to camp.

against their better judgement, they were getting up and heading back into camp within the next few minutes.

agarictail beamed at them, a dazzling grin, and passed them a fish.
