a flash of light blinding light, the grumbling earth and the smell of fire - it was all too much. it happene
d so quickly and ended just as such. when the felines opened their eyes, everything around them was g-
one. they stood in what seemed like a pit of darkness, with a single puddle in the center which reflecte
d the moon above. bewildered, the felines approached and the moon shifted into what appeared to be-
a cat just like themselves, made of the moon's very surface. the feline spoke in a voice unlike any othe
r, claiming moonclan had been banished and in order to save them, the cats must find the twelve zodia
cs before the next full moon. if the succeed their clan would return, but if they failed they would be l-
ost forever. it is up to the last remaining felines to save their missing clan, before it is too late. xxxxxx

as expected, many of the cats were hesitant to believe in this mysterious spirit, nothing like the starry-
cats of above. nonetheless, it wasn't like they had much of a choice. the strange feline spoke once mor
e, this time about blessing them in ways beyond their own imagining. they are vital for them to be abl-
e to complete their quest. the feline warns them of the dangers they will face - many horrors and mon-
strous creatures. claiming a zodiac won't be easy with so many challenges - and challengers - to overco

moonclan's territory was once among a rather large plateau, which overlooked the sprawling rivers bel
ow, along with a nearby mountain range. the felines often had to travel down into the land below to h
unt if they wanted the richest prey and to forage for the best herbs. the camp was in the center, main-
ly underground, hidden by thick shrubs and undergrowth and surrounded by stones. there was a single-
pool of water in the center of the camp, making it easy for cats to quench their thirst. now the platea-
u is much like a crater in the earth, burned to a crisp and as dark as night itself. somehow the pool of-
water managed to survive though, which is a mystery to the surviving felines. | rabbits, birds, eggs, s-
mall reptiles, fish and rodents are common prey. foxes, badgers, hawks, eagles and snakes are threats

[ ─ zodiac chronicles | introduction ]

Postby wildsight » Sat Oct 03, 2020 2:29 pm

      INTRODUCTION

Stars above they shined so bright, yet the world below might as well be cast in everlasting darkness. The world seemed bleak, rather unsatisfying. The ground was rough and just as dark as the night sky above, the only sign of light was the silver light cast by the precious moon, while the stars danced around it. The trees towered above those who dwelled below them, like skeletons reaching up to scrape the sky, tear it apart like a crazed animal does its prey. With a single glance, one couldn’t tell the sky from the earth, as they both were scorched black. The only difference was the silver disk and the many stars that claimed the sky above as their home. One would deem that this predicament was unfair, especially with the fact that their loved ones deserved nothing of the sort in their mind. Some were of course, weren’t as phased as others, but all of their minds bore the same question. What had they done to deserve this? The felines awoke in time, though for some it took more effort to do so than others.
XXXWhy bother to wake up in an empty world, with no one there but the few that survived with you? Perhaps there’s a friend or two that changes your mind or perhaps there’s no one there at all. Still you arise, pelt once bright now stained dark, as if you’ve become the darkness yourself. Darkness. It seemed to lurk everywhere now, but nonetheless there was a light. A single light in the center, just as it always had been. The mere puddle one never paid much attention to otherwise, it now served as the only light in the darkness. The felines all came near, though some stayed farther back than others, though none dared to touch its surface. The water was surprisingly clear unlike its surroundings and it seemed to hold a gentle glow as the moon reflected off of its surface. XXXMoments of silence passed, as if the cats had been put into a trance, but it was broken by the shifting. The shifting of the moon. There in the water, where once it sat so round and bright as always, it shifted into one of them. A cat made of the moon’s very surface. It looked at all of them, eyes brighter than the stars above, it was almost painful for one to look at. But it's not like they could turn away, no. Something drew them in regardless. And at last, as if they could bear the tension no longer, the cat spoke.

XXX“Listen to me. Hear me, hear me clearly.” The voice said, unlike any other voices they had ever heard. “Perhaps this is merely a dream, perhaps it isn’t. You’re now alone regardless and you all are stuck here. Whether this is real or not, you cannot escape from your destiny. Your quest. You’ve all been spared of the destruction of your clan, though the reasons of the cause of this I cannot begin to explain.” Hushed whispers and muttering could be heard among the cats and clearly the mysterious spirit was displeased.
XXX“Silence!” It cried and a blinding bolt of lightning struck the ground, though it didn’t harm them. “You ignorant souls! Listen to me if you even wish to see your clan again.” At this the voices immediately silenced themselves, more so in fear than anything. This wasn’t a mere Starclan cat they were dealing with. “Your clan has not seen its last day yet, but if you wish to see them again you must fulfil this quest: Find the twelve which have the power to save your beloved clan.” At the confused expressions, the feline shook its head slightly, before speaking once more. “The Twelve Zodiacs are your only hope to save your clan. You will face a long journey and many challenges you will face. You’ll see and hear things worse and better than you could have ever imagined, but do not fall for the traps that lie in wait for you. Do not merely trust anything, yet do not run from anything either. I must warn you that one mistake could cost you…”
XXXThe moon spirit trailed off for a moment, allowing these words to sink in before speaking once more. “You have no choice but to accept this quest. And you should not be wasting time, as you have exactly until the next full moon to complete it.” At the expressions that followed the spirit added, “Do not fear. Fear is the worst thing you can bring into this realm.” With a sigh, the feline began to fade away. “I will now bestow on you the blessing in which to survive this treacherous land and the others will do the rest.” The spirit closed its eyes, before a gentle light flowed from the moon itself, casting a glow on each and every soul it fell upon. A warm feeling spread through each cat, though while it was painful to some, others felt nothing of it. It lasted for only a few moments, before the moon spirit began to fade away even more. It then spoke its final words. “Farewell my brethren, may the Stars above light your path.” And with that the cat disappeared and darkness overcame the rest.

XXXSlumber had fallen upon them, though their sleep was anything but dreamless...

Foxshine -- Libra -- Tags; Cinderfrost, open
His unease was clear as the day he was unsure he'd see again as Foxshine gathered around the shallow water just as the rest of the remains of his clan did. {Amberbreeze wasn't among them, he'd sought her out first and could not find her. He was refusing to think about it.} Tail low, ears back, staring as the moon-cat spoke. This had the approximate tone he would have assumed something told only to a medicine cat would have and he managed to pry his eyes away from the being with the intention of seeking Cinderfrost among the familiar-but-too-few faces around him. He needn't have bothered when she emerged all on her own, lunging forward with a ferocity that would have impressed him if he hadn't been halfway through a startled "Wait-!" The action was reckless -- this moon-cat had already shown a volatile... temper? -- and his too-late warning was proven correct when she collapsed.
Any thought Foxshine may have had about that was lost to darkness.
For a time, his dreams were dark, nebulous things. Obscured faces and half-familiar voices. Eventually, though, he found himself sitting in a circle of golden grass, a strange sort of peace falling over his mind. Peace, assurance, confidence. Some part of Foxshine told him that this was a dream, the world beyond the circle nothing but darkness flecked by dim stars, but amber eyes fell upon a pale feline across from him. Larger than any cat he had met and sitting perfectly upright like she were made of stone.
She told him things, he knew she did, but whatever was said slipped away as another voice called his name. Foxshine? That was him, yes. He really did adore his own name, it flowed so nicely -- Oh, Foxshine, please-
"Mm..?" One eye opened a crack as half his body was shoved by the force of the paw on his shoulder. "Cinderfrost, my dear," he mumbled, voice still showing the remnants of sleep as he stared blearily at a shaking point just above her left ear while simultaneously raising a paw to her muzzle, "shhhh."
He held there for a heartbeat before suddenly sitting straight up fast enough to make his vision spin even with no longer being shaken, the events from before his sudden nap returning. Along with brief flashes of whatever he had dreamed. "I'm awake! What..?"

Fogdrift -- Leo -- Tags; None, open
It had been a real struggle to keep her lip from curling as the moon-cat spoke. Destruction of their clan? A quest they had to complete to save them? Who was this... thing to steal their clan from them and force them to do some task? No choice. Until the full moon. Had the medicine cat not lunged forward, Fogdrift may have herself just out of spite for being forced into something she had never asked for.
One second she was among the remnants of her clan, the next she was surrounded by sand, dunes as far as the eye could see. Fogdrift had been standing still but suddenly she was walking beside a massive, brown-maned golden feline -- a lion? was this a lion like in the stories? -- that towered above her yet kept with her slower pace. Images shimmered in the distance, far enough she couldn't make them out but still she felt that she needed to head towards them.
The dream faded slowly to darkness, and noises started reaching her. An ear twitched, and she curled more into herself to avoid the noise. Just a bit longer--

BRIGHTWISH ♓︎
Tags: Open | Mentions: Cinderfrost, MoonClan

When Brightwish’s eyes opened, the first thing he registered was darkness.

He had to be dreaming, judging from the light feeling of his paws as he moved them (a feeling he was quite used to), but it made his surroundings no less eerie. Just as he had been in consciousness, he was shaking, his small body curling into itself, and the words of the strange cat still rung in his ears. Find the twelve which have the power to save your beloved clan, it had said. Do not fear, it had said, and Brightwish gave a half-terrified, half-amused huff at that—how was he supposed to not fear? Right now, he was alone. MoonClan was gone. To Brightwish, there were few things more frightening.

Brightwish perked up his ears, trying in vain to hear anything around him. For a heartbeat, there was only silence—and then Brightwish heard something. A trickling sound, not unlike the rivers and pond he was so familiar with. Water? He looked around, head desperately swiveling back and forth, and finally his eyes fell upon the only source of light in this sprawling blackness: A pond.

Without a second thought, Brightwish padded up to its surface and peered into it. Instead of his own reflection, he came face-to-face with a pair of fish, partially submerged in the water. The two fish swam in opposite directions, chasing each other in dizzying circles. They looked similar enough to those MoonClan took as prey, save for the slight glow emanating from them and the odd symbols on their scaly bodies.

Brightwish leaned back on his haunches and simply watched, tail swishing. Not a moment later, Brightwish found himself doubled over as an immense swell of noise and emotion filled his head.

It was like thousands of yowls echoing throughout the mountains. Feelings and thoughts overwhelmed Brightwish, washing over him like waves, each too strong and fleeting for him to hold onto any one in particular. He hissed through clenched teeth. Unsheathed claws scraped against the nothingness beneath him. Any thought he might have had was drowned out by the sheer force of it all.

Just as suddenly as it had come on, the sensation dissipated, leaving Brightwish blinking spots from his vision as he stared once more down at the pond and the fish within it. He was left with a single thought, a dual-voiced and omnipresent whisper of which he could understand the words but not the meaning. Everything paused for a heartbeat, and then Brightwish’s stomach plummeted as he began to fall. How it was happening, he didn’t know, but he could feel the nonexistent ground give way to send him hurtling down.

His paws flailed out to get a hold on something, anything, but the dream was already fading, a bright white glow beginning to fill his vision. And then, with a gasp, Brightwish snapped awake.

His heart was still pounding in his chest, a distant rumbling still in his ears. But he could feel the hard earth beneath him. His vision was blurry, but he could barely make out the shapes of cats around him—they had to be his clanmates, the ones who’d stood around him as the strange cat of the moon had given its proclamation. Only one was moving, a silver pelt that he recognized. With gritted teeth, he struggled to raise his head and regain feeling in his paws, trying desperately to help.

MAPLEFALL ♒︎
Tags: Open | Mentions: MoonClan

The sun beamed down on Maplefall, bright and warm, as she laid beneath it. Something prickled at the back of her thoughts, a suggestion that she was perhaps forgetting something. She dismissed it—so rarely did she allow herself to rest that sometimes she forgot what it felt like.

A paw batted at her nose. Maplefall sniffed and knocked it away with her tail. “Not now, Bramblekit,” she mumbled, resting her head further against her foreleg. Another paw swatted her swishing tail, and Maplefall’s mouth twisted downward. “You too, Robinkit? Honestly, you two—can’t a cat get a night’s worth of rest around here?”

As soon as the words left her mouth, Maplefall froze. This couldn’t be right. Her kits were warriors by now—lanky, clumsy warriors, from what she’d seen, but warriors nonetheless. And when was the last time she’d even spoken to either of them beyond a quick do you hear that or good catch? Multiple things were wrong here, which could only mean one thing: This wasn’t real.

Dreams had never been all too thrilling for Maplefall, and it was with a twinge in her chest that she recognized this as one. The warmth of the sun faded, leaving her with a cold numbness. She took a breath and forced herself to open her eyes.

She was lying down, but she wasn’t napping in the sun—nor was she anywhere else in MoonClan territory. No, what Maplefall could see in all directions was… the sky. The night sky, dark but alight with stars. Her tail flicked with agitation as she glanced down at herself. Now, though, she could remember: The flash of light. Her clanmates around her, but so few of them, and none she was all that close to. The moon twisting into a cat who had spoken to them. The Twelve Zodiacs are your only hope to save your clan. Whatever that meant.

Maplefall stood. There was no weight beneath her paws, something that likely wasn’t as unsettling as it should have been. After a heartbeat, though, she could feel water start trickling over them.

Jolting backward, Maplefall stared down in surprise—only to find her paws clean, and nothing even approaching water in sight. This was… odd, even by her standards. She narrowed her eyes and glanced around, searching for something, anything beyond the starry void she found herself floating in; and after a moment, her wish was granted when her gaze fell upon a starry cat in the distance, overlooking a stream into which more water was flowing from above.

As soon as Maplefall saw the cat, it lifted its head and turned toward her. An indescribable feeling of warmth radiated between them. Maplefall opened her mouth, but before she could speak, the vision of the cat dissipated into mist, naught but the water below it remaining.

Then true darkness overtook her vision, and Maplefall let out a final hiss as she was thrust into alertness, her eyes squeezed shut and real sunlight hot on her pelt. Her claws shot out to instinctively scrape against the ground, and her wild eyes scraped against her surroundings, finding the forms of her clanmates.

“What,” she spat out, the only thing that came to mind, “was that?”
