The door creaked slowly open to a dark, unseeable interior. The shadows seemed to seep out, lashing and dancing on the floor around you.

An overwhelming sense of dread hung heavy in the air as specks of colour, what seemed like eyes and grinning little mouths dotted the darkness. Faint echoed laughs faded into the background.

One large, glowing orb stuck out from the rest and the point of a porcelain beak poked past the shadow. The decorated mask hovered as if levitating but if you looked close you could see the hints of a form behind it.

A breathy, distant voice echoed from within,

"Trick!"

The plodding clop of hooves resonate thick echoes through the air, eyes glowing a thousand colours, scanning for a target. They lock on a door, the horse's heavy huffs marking its every step.

The intricate patterns of its coat shimmer in the moonlight, wrapped in bandage; a crude mimicry of mummification. The beast halts at the door, lowering its head, and the treat basket in its mouth.

From its back, an excited tiny voice buzzes with squeaks. Seated in the saddle is a little grey and white rat sporting the littlest grim reaper costume. It seems the small one has help from a big friend this year.

He squeaks in approval to the horse. They nudge the door in mock knocking with their nose.

The rat squeaks in the mightiest voice he can muster:

"Trick or treat!"
