"You haven't upset our camp at all." Eden reassured Sienna with the gentlest of smiles. Poor soul, she had so much to deal with after losing two beloved friends in a single day. "I need to apologize on behalf of Madeline and Gloria making you feel unwelcome. Neither of them are acting as a Career should - it's disappointing. I'm sorry you had to deal with their drama." He had to tell the truth, even if it was harsh.
Sienna told him to keep Moses' jacket, which he responded to with a solemn nod. Eden hated to deprive the poor duo of resources they could use, but maybe they had other reasons of not wanting the jacket - like bad memories associated with it.
"Thank you, Sienna. I'll give you two a moment," Eden murmured as Sienna wrapped her arms around him a final time. He held her tight, not wanting to let go. But he had to. "Take care of yourself and Jay, alright? See you tonight."
As reluctant as he was to leave, Eden squeezed her hand one last time and then headed back to camp. Sienna's soothing voice faded into the distance as she began to explain things to little Jay. The poor lad, Eden hoped he'd at least be able to sleep tonight.
Once he arrived back at camp, he took a moment to look over his allies. No one seemed any more injured than when he'd left them. Caspia still looked furious at Gloria, Madeline was stewing in a corner, and Chaska...
Eden noticed the scene, a lone Career scrubbing his bloodstained hands in the waters of the river, and immediately knew something was amiss. A very similar scene had played out earlier this morning, except that time it was Eden washing his hands of blood. He rushed over to Chaska without hesitation. Kneeling down, he gently guided his friend's now-clean hands out of the water just as Chaska had done for him.
"Chaska, I'm here now," Eden murmured, wrapping his arms around his Career brother. "Sienna wants to thank you for helping her friend go peacefully. You did a kind deed, the kindest you could have done in that situation."
But it was never easy. Eden had seen it before, the toll it took on even the calmest and strongest of Careers. Anise, Jess, Reinhold. You never truly end suffering, you relieve them of theirs but carry it on your own shoulders. Knowing this, he couldn't begin to fathom what Chaska must be feeling right now, what conflicting emotions tortured the battle-scarred Career's mind.
"I'm sorry. It must have been difficult. I... I'm not going to let go until I know you're okay, alright?"
