- πany long seasons have come and gone since the first rabbits came to settle at Watership Down. The brave rabbits who led the fight against General Woundwort and Efrafa have all passed on, but their legend remains exalted among the warren, held in almost as high regard as the tales of El-Ahrairah himself. The warren has since met with prosperity; even with the constant threat of elil, the rabbits of Watership down grew happy and healthy, strong in numbers and empowered by the tales of their ancestors.
π»owever, this prosperity has now fallen under a dark shadow. The chief rabbit of Watership Down, once hailed with the same pride as any leader, would appear to have become corrupt in his position of power. His strongest owsla members have been sent on far-ranging missions to chase out any outsiders who may threaten to compete with his warren - not only hlessil, but small warrens as well have been uprooted and chased for miles. While the chief rabbit claims he is doing what is best for the rabbits of Watership Down and the peace they have enjoyed for so long, some rabbits have made their dissent quite clear. Claiming he was tarnishing the history of their warren, these rebels soon found themselves staring down the warren's most fearsome owsla officers, sent to silence any potential uprising by any means necessary.
πfter several leaders of the dissent mysteriously disappeared, their names never spoken of by the high-ranking rabbits, many others became silenced by fear. Those few who wouldn't be suppressed largely ended up disappearing as well - but this time, the response was different. A round of fervent interrogations ensued, ultimately meaning one thing: the chief rabbit and his owsla did not know what had happened to this second batch of rebels. In reality, a small band of renegades fled to hide a ways south of Watership Down, where they still remain, planning to ultimately find a way to overthrow Watership Down's chief rabbit and free the warren's residents. However, they are small in numbers and are constantly under threat of being found by a patrol of Watership owsla.
π©ow that the chief rabbit back at the down has forbidden any rabbits from leaving his warren, fear has kept most of the rabbits in line, and even those who dissent keep quiet, fearing the consequences of defying their leader. Hushed whispers of a secret rebel warren hidden in the shelter of the woods still circulate among them, but some do not have faith in its existence, and for most, the risks of stealing away are too great. Without allies on the inside, the rebels have relied largely on trying to recruit hlessil before Watership's owsla drives them away, though growing in numbers causes them grow ever more conspicuous. The storm between the two continues to build with every passing dawn, and only time will tell when it will finally break - or who will come out on top.
