Axolotls rock! I'd like to own one someday, although they're not as high on my list since I can't hold them.

I used to own an axolotl. c': His name was Cthulhu (he went through a few name changes; first he was Carl, then Monster, then Cthulhu). They're super interesting pets and very fun to watch!

As pets, they're a lot of fun to just stare at and observe. Especially around feeding time! Their eyesight is poor so they use their sense of smell to find their food underwater. They thrive on a diet of earthworms, but you can supplement with blood worms and shrimp pellets.

The way they sort of snuffle around looking for their worms is endearing to me. c': That's what makes them fun to look at. Plus they don't really swim, they just sort of waddle around on the ground. They mainly use their tails when they actually do swim, and they're very curious animals, so when you stick your hand or fingers or anything in the tank, they'll swim up and investigate it. They can bite, but they don't have teeth so it doesn't hurt.
As far as treats, you can give them freeze-dried shrimp.

Can you pet them? Do you pat their heads, or rub their scale things, or?

You can gently pet their heads, but you have to be careful because too much petting can mess up their slime coat. They don't have scales, they just have a layer of "slime" that protects their skin from damage. They're more of a "look and don't touch" sort of pet.

and wandering around his tank.
His favorite treat is a bloodworm cube. hehe
