The clan had been quiet for moons now. The last killer had never been found, but the murders tapered off, and they could never prove who had done it. Little did the clan know, a new murderer was rising, teeth bared with ambitions and anger. And they were going for Thunderclan’s throat.

Cranekit was outside the nursery, playing with a ball of moss. Across camp, another cat watched, having just come back from the forest. Camp was fairly empty, any others nodding off in the sun or out of camp. They played with the idea in their mind before making it up, nodding swiftly, and padding over to Cranekit.
“Hello, Cranekit!” The cat purred through a mouth of leaves. “I have a surprise for you, but you must be quiet!”
Cranekit looked up from their mossball, eyes darting around camp excitedly. “A surprise? Are you gonna take me out of camp?”
“No, even better. I’ve brought you a treat, but you have to hide it. And you can’t tell anyone you have it. You’ll get in big trouble, okay?” Cranekit looked at the leaves and berries as the other cat dropped them. They were a beautiful bright red, and looked tasty. “Remember, don’t eat them until later.”
Cranekit nodded, scooping the treat up and disappearing to hide the berries.

Several hours later, after what they presumed had been Cranekit’s dinner, they heard coughing and hacking coming from the nursery. They, along with every other cat in camp, scurried over just in time to see the kit heave their last breathe, their mouth covered in red from the yew berries. Otteriris’ sobs racked her through the night, even after the burial and goodbyes.

A sigh rippled out of the young apprentice. He couldn't believe it. The only kit in the clan, gone, by the power of death berries. It was absolutely awful, and Beepaw just couldn't believe it. How could someone do that to such a young, innocent child? It had been almost a moon since Cranekit's death, and the choking, coughing noise and Otteriris' wails were haunting his dreams each night. He curled further into his nest, nuzzling into the warm moss he laid on. He just couldn't stop thinking about it. How had Cranekit even got hold of the berries in the first place? It didn't make sense to him. He sighed again, sitting up and stretching, shaking out his fur and grooming it for a moment. Perhaps he'd clear his mind with a walk?

Otteriris never recovered from the night. She barely got any sleep- if she did manage to bring herself to a doze, she most likely would be plagued with nightmares about Crane's red-filled mouth. The choking. The final breath. It was practically a moon now, but she still kept her sleepless nights outside, staring up at the stars. Thinking about what an accident it was. Or maybe not. She was alive during the last murders, and they always plauged her young times. It was gone now, but she thought about it. Maybe this wasn't an accident. She was sure she saw Crane in the camp. If there were deathberries in the camp, surely they would be noticed and removed. She got up, looking around at the practically lifeless camp. She wanted to protect everyone. If it meant finding the killer, if there was one, banishing one cat to save them all, Otter would do it.
