I'm getting water!

Art/writing: Alastor narrowed his eyes as he settled the buckets on his back. He was quick to go on his way, stepping down into the woods. The flight comment made Alastor frustrated, his tail whipping behind him. Winged Lambicorns had it so easy with the ability to fly. Alastor was always left on the ground, having to figure out ways around things where others would just shrug and fly over. Perhaps that gave him an advantage, though. He's used to being on the ground, so it'd be easier for him than the winged lambies forced to not use flight. Alastor paused when he came to a steep drop on his path. He stood there for a moment before carefully lowering a hoof onto a more stable looking part of the cliff. He was doing good for a few minutes before the ground crumpled under him. He fumbled, one of the buckets falling off his back and down. Thankfully on the way back it'd be easier to get back up. He eventually made it down, picked the bucket back up, and carried on his way. The forest around him was obviously meant to be scary with random rustles and eyes peering from dark shadows. Alastor didn't feel very phased though, he knew he had more eyes than anything out there watching him. The next challenge he faced was a large wall of brambles. Alastor trotted around some of it, trying to find a path to get through. After a bit, he just decided to tough it out. He walked very carefully through the brambles, not enough to avoid scrapes but enough to where it wasn't too uncomfortable. He finally came to the large lake, taking a few steps in to fill the buckets with the spring water. The water soothed his scrapes some, giving him the energy to make the trip back. He had to take a few minutes to properly balance the now full buckets on his back, but he eventually got it and started on his way back. Back through the brambles, the dark twisting paths, and the sudden drop. As he scaled the same cliff, very careful not to tip the buckets, he noticed that none of the other lambies had gotten back yet. He puffed out his chest with pride as he made his way up to Grimm, gently placing the buckets on the ground in front of them and dipping his head to the larger lambicorn.

Sunfire looks up to the other much more imposing lambicorn a moment, pensive. "Well, nobody ever expected you to think us worthy just for showing up! You want water, you've got it!" With the magic stored in her horn she positioned the empty water buckets onto her back, careful to shimmy a bit right, then a bit left, until she could feel the center point of balance. Taking in a deep puff of air, she started on her way.

She thankfully did not have wings either, but rather hard hooves designed for long and hard travels! Still, this place was filed with sounds she had never heard before, things she had never smelled before, and sights which frankly made her pause in her steps to take a second look to assure she still had her sanity! Still, there were paths if one knew where to look, where creatures had actually traveled before. She tried to keep to that path, once or twice readjusting her buckets until finally she reached her destination!

Filling up her buckets, she found the load was not much heavier and twice as awkward. Still, she would not let her chosen patron down! She was Sunfire dang it, and she never backed down from a challenge! If some strange creature looked at her wierd, she looked right back at it with a weirder look! Strange sounds? She would make a stranger one! And the smells? Well she could not do anything for that one really. Ah well, two out of three was not bad!

Finally she arrived back, setting her buckets down and finding only one other before her. She gave the other lambicorn a bow of respect, before looking back up at Grimm. "Two buckets delivered!" She remarks, curious where the next task was going to lead them.

Water. Novaria could get some water.

‘You will not be able to fly,’ the Elder had said, and that suited her just fine. Her wings were for show anyway, and turned off for the moment either way- true, they were a good source of light, but she didn’t want to attract any unnecessary attention.

That said... she hadn’t really felt all that frightened? Novaria steadied the yoke holding the buckets before trotting along the marked path, looking all around to take in every detail. She’d lived in a cityscape, most of her life- areas towering, true, but with shining glass and rough stone; beautiful in their own right but utterly alien, compared to here. Foreboding, even. Not frightening, but... well, one couldn’t help but at least feel somewhat awed, even humbled, by the sight of such ancient trees and such. A land that was here before she had ever been but the dream of a dream, and would still be there long after the last shimmer of her Stardust remains twinkled away.

Perhaps that was a... a little scary. Something so ancient, so... unfathomably old? Novaria swallowed, freezing dread creeping over her body as her paws slipped, briefly, over the mass of dead vegetation on the ground; it was sheer luck that she managed to catch herself before the buckets fell. Something told her Grimm wouldn't be pleased with half-composted leaves and muck in the buckets. Her progress was slow, but steady- the light had been faint at the center of the ring to begin with, here it was even fainter. Barely a scrap of moon, and the glow that suffused the forest ahead was... unsettling; somehow dark while still giving some light, a strange cobalt... mass?

Mushrooms?

Something like Tera would dream up, but nothing Novaria wanted to get tangled with any more than necessary. All she could do was be grateful for the little light they provided, that and a signal that she was near her goal. Mushrooms and shimmering moss became more common as the air grew heavier, the scent of damp decaying centuries almost tangible against her chest; she didn't even notice the lake until she felt the warm water lapping at her chest.

"Guess... well! Guess this is it, right?" Novaria said, looking around. Not that she expected a response, but she'd hoped the sound of her voice would dispel some of the unease. Instead, it just seemed like the marsh swallowed the sound up before it could bounce back. Like it didn't know she was there- or perhaps it did, and she was no more to the bog than a speck of cloud was to her.

Novaria steadied the yoke on her back, wincing slightly as she adjusted to the heavier weight. The return trip was slower, but brighter- for all the creaking and groaning, all the high hums and chirps and distant grumbles and growls, she hadn't seen a hint of anything beyond plant life on the way down, so why not turn her wings back on? The cheery seafoam glow did help, it seemed even an ancient forest couldn't swallow up every inch of her presence. Here was her light, there on the ground the mixed steps of her paws and hooves, a vine or root she'd shifted out of the way. There in the lake, a little less water than there had been before. Absolutely minuscule, of course, but undeniable indicators- someone had been there, things had changed, even if only for a short time, because of her.

"Your water, sir," Novaria said as she finally approached Grimm again. She glanced at the other sets of buckets- clearly she had been on the slower side, and that wasn't the cheeriest of thoughts when one didn't know the exacts of their task. But... hey, she'd gotten it done. No use worrying, right? "And... if I may add? You picked a marvelous area," she said after a moment. "It's like walking through history out there. Thank you for letting us pass."

The wisps around Grimm circle each other getting faster and faster until a green glowing object apears. The wisps return to their master and you find yourself the proud owner of a Box of wigs

@Griff Grimm looks down at your buckets and slowly nods. "You seem to have completed this task somewhat easily, do not expect your next tasks to be quite so simple." The wisps produce a small box, inside you find a pair of earings.

@Makoto Kino Grimm stares at you for a moment before nodding once again. You have successfully completed your task, though flattery will do you no favors" Though Grimm does seem a bit happier after you compliment them. The wisps produce a small bucket with gold swirls on it. You have been given a paint bucket.

Lilac glances at the magic map with the X and looks to Grimm with a determined grin, "I can do this." She takes a more thorough look at the map and takes off. The buckets are light for now and that makes her happy, at least the first leg of the journey will be easy. She makes careful note of where she walks, she'll need to remember it for when she gets on her way back. Leaving the site where Grimm is, the forest becomes more dark. There's glowing fungi on some trees that cast small amounts of blue-green light on to the ground as she walks. But the leaves over head rattle in the soft breeze, making her skin crawl. She decides she needs to try to be smart and scoops up a paw full of the goopy fungus and smears it into an x on the trees as she goes. She has no clue for how long she'll be able to find the fungus so she spends a bit of time filling both of her buckets half way with the slippery stuff. She goes along, walking and marking the trees, and every once and a while jumping at shadows. She hears a growl in the distance and speeds up. Finally, her efforts of collection come to use. The forest grows entirely dark and her mold acts more as a lantern for her steps. The forest is much scarier without the bright splotches at the ground and the moss and vines hanging from trees manage to hit her in the face many a time before she can duck. Then she reaches the lake. It's a wonderful lake and she runs up to it excitedly. She dumps the small amount left of her fungus and cleans the rest out with her paw. the stones at the bottom of the lake glow light blue and she sits for a small moment to admire them. She wants to drink some of the water, but something makes her think it may not be normal. After all, Grimm wasn't giving a lot of information on this, perhaps he had greater plans for a special water. She carefully fills up the buckets and places them on either side of her on a big strong stick. The water is heavier than she had expected and she huffs up the small hill that lead to the lake, looking for her x's. She finds her first one and the second without much trouble, but the third comes with trouble. She had managed to double back on herself and ended up back at the second marker. She tried again and found it, getting back on her way. The rest come as easily as the first two and her fear begins to subside, everything seems to be going alright! She makes it back to Grimm with most of the water with her, having spilled a tiny bit here and there when she stumbled on rocks. "Here you go," she says enthusiastically. She places them down, instantly happy for the relief of the stick from her back. It had been digging into her the whole journey. She places the stick aside and sits down, waiting for Grimm's next command.

Taking a closer look at the map this time Lilac nods, "just a few rocks shouldn't be too hard. I'll be right back!" She wonders how many blocks there will be once everyone had brought their's back. The sound of the ruins seemed mildly foreboding, what was it that had been ruined? Lilac followed a similar idea as last time, taking fungus from the ground and putting it on trees as to not get lost. She put check marks instead of x's this time however, just in case the two different markers crossed paths. This path is much longer than the first one she had to take and after a half hour of walking she sat down for a small break, leaning against a tree, after all she needed just a quick rest from two trips. She leaps back in surprise, something squishy was against the tree! She wipes it off of her shoulder in distaste, and recognizes the feeling. This was one of her old markers! She feels it out and sure enough the disgusting feeling makes one large x. She feels a squick of panic and instantly gets on her way, she's gotta get going before the glow of her new checks disappears! She goes off at a quick pace, the fungus is no more and she works off of landmarks; a large stone that sorta looks like a cat, a tree that had been struck by lightning, a boulder that scared the tar out of her because it looked like a beast and was covered in shaggy moss. Then her paw hits nothing but air and she tumbles downwards. She looks up in confusion, there was ground but a second ago. She stands and finds herself to be in a small ravine, luckily not very deep. She could already hear the words of her sister if she came back home from the festival with a broken leg. She feels at a loss, how in the world would she get out? Lilac decides to take a path, following the ravine to the left. She steps over and onto sharp rocks and branches, ending up bruised and banged up when she reaches a tunnel in the side of the ravine. It's fairly large and she could feel a breeze coming through it. She decides to follow it, despite the many more words of her sister echoing in her mind. She runs off happily, her braid hitting the side of the tunnel every once and a while. The tunnel ended after a while and her eyes opened wide in excitement. It was the ruins! She trots out of the tunnel and begins her search for the special stones. She looked for the rocks with glyphs and quickly found them. The trickier part was figuring out how to carry them. After a bit of searching she found a large piece of sturdy bark. Carefully setting it on top of her back she somehow managed to get the blocks on it as well. Now she was ready to go. She avoided the ravine and started looking for her landmarks. Scary boulder, lightning tree, cat rock. Then she found her markers, markers eight, seven, six, five, four - and the rest were gone, nothing but a smudge of dark wet plant against dark dry trees. She made the last leg of her journey haltingly, wishing she had looked for landmarks here as well. Luckily there was enough light to get back to where she began, and she eventually was able to follow the voices of the other lambicorns to where Grimm was. she deposited her blocks with the rest of the gathered ones and turns to him. "Alright, I got the rocks, is there anything else?"

Art/writing Alastor spent a few minutes examining the map and figuring out exactly where the ruins were. With the previous task the lake had been much closer, it was easy to just go in the general direction and arrive there. He'd have to be more careful going to the ruins, though. Getting lost while carrying heavy bricks wouldn't be an ideal situation. He glanced up at the large Lambicorn looming above him. Alastor nodded his head before finally setting off back into the woods. The path towards the ruins seemed much more flat than the path he took to the lake, thankfully. It was going to be tough, but not as tough as he thought. The scrapes on his legs still stung, and Alastor found himself having to take breaks on the way. A little over halfway there, he took a few steps off the mossy overgrown path to lay down. He found himself staring up at the sky, the stars very faint. He wondered what those following the Queen of Dreams were doing. They were probably off frolicking in soft clouds, chasing butterflies and happy thoughts. He huffed, rolling his eyes. Following Grimm was hard work so far, but at least it was work. Alastor quickly got back onto his hooves, continuing on his way. Eventually he came up on the edge of the clearing, the ruins jutting out of the ground in the center of it. He cautiously checked around him, just to make sure nothing would run out to stop him from getting the bricks. Soon he stepped out, narrowing his eyes as he stared at the ruins. He wondered for a moment what happened to them. He then noticed the various bricks laying about, strange marks written into them. He grabbed the first brick he saw, settling it on his back. It was just as heavy as the two full buckets. He sighed before moving onto the next. Soon all 3 bricks were stacked on his back, and he slowly set off again. Now chasing butterflies sounded real fun...
Almost two hours later, Alastor finally found himself at the beginning. He let the bricks slide off his back as he laid down to catch his breath. He didn't take the take to see if anyone else has beaten his time, he didn't really care as much as he did in the first challenge.
