That's just not true, though. The summer events have a long history of using a wide variety of items fround in banners as token trade-in currencies, even if they looked very decorative and not like their sole purpose was to be traded in.
personally, I'd even argue that some previous events were a lot more challenging in this regard, considering...

these were all all banner items. and these were also all token items.

Yes, but the day-dream items were added in the first or 2nd day (Early on I can't remember exactly) - and I remember getting a large amount of fireflies (more so than people seem to be receiving bears) at least. It was nearly 7 years ago. The new users that are going to see this and never trade their tokens/banner items aren't going to remember something they weren't here to experience. Or know that In the end you will get more items .

I don't like it. I think there are other ways to make it 'challenging' that make a lot more sense and have less of a scare effect, and impact on long term aspects of the game like trading

It is what it is though, and they didn't ask me.
At least there does only seem to be one outcome.
