yeah I apparently got really lucky w/ doubles and the fact that I had a lot of tokens to spare because TWO people just came sprinting in to my trades, one dumping a bunch of rares on me for tokens and the other dumping like...7 or 8 wishlist pets on me for some cotton candy doubles and a raccoon dog double

I doubt it. Free event pets rarely, if ever, get a rare tag. I've seen plenty of people that got duplicates. I think it's more that it's a more wanted outcome, and not so much that it's harder to get.
