➵ Icarus Matthias of District Two
"They would be wrong to underestimate either of you." Icarus's voice remained measured and stern. Despite his cold, rough demeanor, this was his odd way of showing approval for his tributes.
"Are you ready for the arena?" Icarus looked them both over with a stony stare. If Gloria or Chaska had last-minute questions to ask or statements to make, now was the time to speak up. He trusted they wouldn't hesitate.
➵ Edmund Grant of District Four
Finally calm, Edmund adjusted his crooked glasses on the bridge of his nose. All the Careers had earned high scores this time around. "The alliance is stronger than ever this year. I'm sure you'll all do amazing in the arena!"
When the disrespectful District Twelve girl's score appeared, the mentor suppressed a laugh. That unruly whelp had not a scrap of honor in her. She was a belligerent bully, picking on smaller and weaker tributes every chance she got. Hopefully Caspia, Killick, and their Career brethren would get rid of the horrible girl early on. The look in Reyna's eyes reminded Edmund of Cobalt Carson, the bully who'd murdered his district partner in an attempt to impress the Careers. It'd backfired in his face of course. Traitorous disgrace.
"You must have really impressed them," Edmund said as Caspia explained what she'd done to earn such a score. "I wish I could spar with you, too! But I'm retired from being a Career now and you'd take me down in seconds."
"Now I really sound like an old man," he chuckled with a shake of his head.
➵ Gleam Winston of District Six
Gleam raised an eyebrow at Colby. After a moment of silence, she burst out laughing, horrid cackles that shook her thin body. "When you betray them, make sure nobody sees you do it. Your surviving allies will be none the wiser. As for your victim, they're dead anyway so it doesn't matter."
She leaned in close, cold eyes bright with curiosity. "Unless... poor Colby is already getting attached to his allies."
➵ Garry Woods of District Seven
Garry held back a laugh at Sienna's red-faced denial. Of course, her district partner sold her out, pretty much forcing her to come clean about her feelings. She seemed stressed out about it but ended up confessing the whole story anyway, while Garry leaned forward and listened intently. Had his tribute fallen in love with a Career?
"That's so sweet," He murmured, trying not to tear up again. "I promise I'll plant sunflowers for you if anything happens, but here's my advice. Never give up on yourself in the arena, alright? Sacrificing yourself for love might be tempting, but he's a Career."
It took Garry a moment to realize how badly he'd worded things. Eyes widening, he quickly backtracked. "Sorry, my bad! That last bit sounded terrible, but it's not what it sounds like. I just have personal experience with Careers, and..."
He paused for a moment, staring down at his hands. Eleven years had passed and he still expected to see the bloodstains.
"... Not all of them want to go home." Garry looked up at Sienna with an expression like he'd seen a ghost. "Maybe he'd prefer if you survived and made it back to your family."
➵ Jasper Tiberius of District Eight
Jasper noticed the tell-tale blush painting his tribute's cheeks. As Penny talked about how nice he was, the mentor stayed silent but smiled knowingly. It was almost like looking into a mirror. Oh, how he wished Addison from District Four would notice him... maybe one day he'd approach the beautiful victor.
"He's a keeper," Jasper told Penny with a warm expression. "Stay close together in the arena, alright? Other tributes might want to exploit your kindness. But Felix is a good person - I trust you'll look out for each other."
➵ Himaya Hannock of District Eleven
"Hmm." Himaya wore an impassive expression as she sat back down, mulling over her next words. She'd never mentored a set of tributes this young before. It pained her to think about how in a few short days, these innocent children would be thrown into a senseless deathmatch against ruthless murderers twice their size. They'd have to be careful.
"I want to know your plans," She told Zoe and Jay. The bloodbath was a dangerous place and they needed to prepare. From Himaya's experience, Careers often left the small children alone at first, but no such grace period existed for other tributes. People like Reyna and Darius would absolutely target the kids early on.
➵ Maverick Wolfe of District Twelve
Noises of violent destruction continued to sound from Reyna's room, but Maverick had no intentions of trying to calm her. His cheek still smarted from the unprovoked slap she'd unleashed on him. The instant he knocked on that door, she'd fly out and attack again.
Maverick shook his head and returned his attention to Felix. At least one of his tributes this year was a reasonable, rational human being. He genuinely hoped Felix would survive in the arena - the boy had a good heart. It was frankly disgusting the Capitol would cut it short this way. Of course, Maverick couldn't say that out loud under fear of execution. What would the District Twelve tributes do without a mentor? As the coal district's only victor, he had no replacements lined up...
"Good. I trust you'll be a man of your word." His expression softened in a smile as Felix agreed to his promise. "Having hope is no easy task, especially when mutts are nipping at your heels. But it's all that separates us between life and death sometimes."
Felix's next question brought upon flashes of memories. A shelter built too small, forcing all of them to cuddle up together. Flowers woven through a fallen teammate's hair. A Career's blade, a blow that never struck him as Mekwi of District Ten had taken it in his stead. Maverick had to take a moment to breathe before he responded.
"I wasn't alone." A small smile graced his features. Despite all the despair and horror of the Games, sometimes Maverick found himself longing to return to that bloodstained time to see his allies alive and well again.
"And you won't be, either." His expression shifted, taking on a determined edge as he referred to the young lady from Eight. "I've already watched too many solo tributes fall apart in the arena. But there's someone looking out for you, isn't there?"
