- "I'm trying, Olsen!" Eirik groaned, running a hand down his face in frustration. Olsen, seemingly just as annoyed and frustrated as the apprentice, huffed and turned away from the younger Cervitaur. "Not hard enough." He quipped, whipping his back around to glare in disapproval. "Now shut-it 'nd get somethin' to eat." Before the pair could fall back into their usual squabbling, they separated from one other and took seats at opposite tables; the hunter alongside some friends, while the apprentice remained alone.
Those seated among the Gathering Hall peered-up from their meals as the two had entered, some grumbling while others stifled a bit of laughter, finding the encounter amusing. Upon taking their seats, Olsen joked with his friends on how much of a hassle the training had been so far, while Eirik sighed in annoyance, embarrassed of the others' reactions. Though the apprentice would never dare to admit it, in truth, he did have to agree that he had been... difficult to train. He hadn't taken any of his mentors' criticism well that day, and his behavior wasn't helping anyone, especially himself ── in fact, it was probably damaging his ability to learn and prepare for his acceptance into the ranks. And yet, no matter how much he strove to become a strong and skillful hunter as the others, his stubborn tendencies never allowed him to back-down. No matter, the apprentice had shown great progress, and nearing his fifteenth-year, he was fast approaching his year of acceptance. With a resigning sigh, Eirik faced away from the group of adults and began munching of the meal he was served, a fresh filet of trout laid across his dish.
Callelle entered the Gathering Hall only minutes afterward, her hair tied-back in a functional braid, and dirt still wedged beneath her fingernails, the gatherer never really having the time to clean them out after a log day of work. She'd been stuck at her garden throughout much of the day, working and reworking the soil and her crops. Her forehead still gleaming with a sheen of sweat, she quickly wiped-away what she could, though her appearance and the state of her clothing clearly revealed the work she had tended to that day. The wheat seeds, which she had successfully managed to plant, were sprouting short spurts of green, reaching higher from the ground with each day. She was sure the wheat would be fully-grown and ready to harvest within weeks, if not sooner. The other seeds she had managed to gather, those of corn, had been stored in a dry place within her home, until she felt it was an ideal time to plant them. She dug into a patch separate from the wheat, and placed the seeds in holes adjacent to one another. Each day, Callelle emerged from her cabin and rounded to its side, checking each sprout, and watering when needed. To do so, she'd simply trot to the nearest stream ── which wasn't a very difficult thing to locate, in fact ── and fill her pail with the clearest freshwater she could manage, returning into the village within minutes of her departure.
The Cervitaur took a seat in the company of the apprentice, finding herself a meal in which she scarfed-down within minutes; the work of the day had tired her, and she'd nearly forgotten to eat at all, not even for a quick snack. The savory taste of the trout and accompanying side-dishes were welcomed on her tongue, chewing happily. Callelle cast a friendly smile to the apprentice, and though hesitant, Eirik returned with a dip of his head. They both returned to silently enjoying their meals, just as they had before.
The Commander, Helanthe, and Thrud, the General, were among the final members to arrive into the Gathering Hall. Upon entering, the dining Taurfolk glanced up from their meals and addressed them respectfully, dipping their heads in greeting. As the pair made their way to their seats, separated from the others upon a low podium, they finally rested and enjoyed their meals just as the others. They sipped on wine from intricate chalices, the substance smooth and tangy on their tastebuds. Lastly, Thorsten trotted silently through the entrance and took his seat, barely raising any attention from the others. His eyes seemed weary, dark bags forming beneath. He'd had his nose wedged between the books and scrolls of his library, his quill waving in constant momentum as he wrote pages upon pages of notes in a leatherbound journal ── no other beings would ever know what his notes entailed, nor did they have much interest. Eventually, though, a future Shaman would sort through the journals left by their predecessors, and they would take notes just the same as Thorsten had.
Bjor, the large Irish Wolfhound, quite enjoyed the experience himself, meandering from one table to the next. He'd somehow manage to find even the most minuscule scraps dropped by the Taurfolk as they feasted. Eventually though, in curiosity, the dog trotted his way onto the podium, in which the Commander happily offered him a juicy morsel of the fresh trout that made the meal of the night. The dog snatched it up immediately, and spent the remainder of the evening among the Hall perched beside her seat, panting gaily.
Helanthe's lilac orbs scanned the tables of the longhouse; the others had just begun finishing the final bites of their meals, engaged in casual conversation with their fellow Guard. They leaned back on their haunches, hunger satisfied, and sleep creeping to their eyes. The adults continued to work on their wine, sipping the final contents of their cups to the very last drop. The Commander, deciding to take the chance while she had it, slowly rose from her seat and promptly cleared her throat. Almost immediately, the buzzing conversations dimmed and their eyes flicked toward her own, curiosity swirling within. "I am so pleased to have all of you join me here, among our Gathering Hall, for this delectable meal tonight ── cheers to you, Thrud." Helanthe started, her head turning slightly to her left as she shot a smile to the General, who returned it with a simple nod. She quickly returned her attention to the small crowd, her voice loud and clear as it filled the air of the longhouse. "The Guard cherishes the strong and determined warriors of you all ── skilled in your crafts, excelling in your ranks. You give more than ever expected."
Her eyes scanned their seats, catching Eiriks' deep-violet gaze, gleaming with interest. "Let us relish our years' accomplishments ── we welcomed Eirik, the apprentice, who certainly still has much to learn," She began, dipping her head as she prepared to continue, though the young Cervitaur quickly cast his gaze away in embarrassment. "though his true features have already begun to show, and Eirik proves that, even through a few years of training, he harbors the traits and values of a powerful warrior. The Guard is honored to raise and train a young warrior with as much potential as he." Quickly, Eirik's gaze snapped back unto hers, an expression of shock plastered upon his face.
The Commander flicked her eyes from the apprentice and found those of the large draft, Olsen, who dipped his head in recognition, his dark orbs swirling in the flickering light of the lanterns. "And Olsen, his mighty mentor, has proved himself more than expected; he is a hunter that excels in whichever task he is given. He is strong, diligent, and respectful. May we all take example from him ── the Guard cherishes his presence among them." Nods of agreement passed at the Centaurs' words, as the younger hunter, Arkyn, clapping a hand to Olsens' back in encouragement. Their laughter rumbled into the atmosphere, sparking a smile of the Commander's own.
Finally, Helanthe reached toward her chalice of wine and gripped its stem between her fingers, lifting it from the table and just above eye-level while her arm stretched before her. The rest below and beside her raised their cups in unison, even Bjor perking-up in attention. "May we toast; to our newest members, our feast," Taking a moment to pause, she tipped her cup slightly and grinned. "and to the Guard!" A chorus of shouts and cheers rang into the space of the Hall, followed by laughter as the Guard sipped from their wine. They settled once more into their seats, and as time wore into the night, the Taurfolk began to rise from their seats and take to their cabins for rest. The Commander and General were among the last to depart, and as they passed each other on their way, Thrud gently praised Helanthe for her speech, and disappeared into the darkness of her cabin.
The Fenguard would have a restful sleep ── their stomachs full, and their hearts warmed by pleasantries. No one bothered to stand-guard of the gate; it wouldn't be necessary, at least for one spring evening ── not many passed through the fen anyways.
