All summer long, Maisie had been longing to be back to school. She missed doing magic, and her friends, and the castle. From her first year at Hogwarts, it had been a haven for her. Her parents were wonderful, her family was great, she lived a normal life...but Hogwarts had mystery and intrigue and more magic than anywhere else on the planet (or so she was convinced.) She was one of those people that had fallen wholeheartedly in love with the grey stones, the warmth of the fires, the smell of books, and the feeling of electricity, of pure magic in the air. She was known for her temper, and had, on more than one occasion, to her chagrin, literally exploded. She was trying to change that, though. When McGonagall had made her a prefect, she was shocked, everyone was. She had gone to McGonagall in disbelief, and questioned it, only to be met with "There will be no argument, Ms Hawthorne. I've made my decision." Now she got it. As she watched over the first years, a smile spread over her face. The excitement was tangible as old friends reunited, and new friends met. As McGonagall spoke, the whispers grew slightly louder at the mention of a ball. Nothing like that had happened the entire time she'd been there. As the speech came to an end, she cheered loudly. The headmistress may have been a Gryffindor, but she was almost universally liked.
Maisie grinned as the food appeared, and laughed at the awe on the first years faces. Even the ones who were acting unimpressed widened their eyes. She glanced around, looking for a familiar face. She hadn't really made any close friends. which...sucked, honestly. Well, that wasn't entirely true. Winona- Winnie had been one of her closest friends since she could remember, their parents were close. But that didn't help her much with her own house. She sat up a little straighter, trying to catch her eye. Winnie jumped up, and beamed, waving. Maisie grinned back, waving. She settled back in, grabbing a plate and loading up on her favorites.

Winnie had let out a laugh as soon as she stepped off the train, spinning around in Hogsmeade station. The air felt cooler, the world felt brighter, and her mood had instantly lifted. She scooped Alvin out of his carrier, and put him on her shoulder. "Welcome home, buddy." She grinned. The overcast skies relaxed her, as she headed towards the carriages. She pulled the meat out of the sandwich her mother had given her, stopping by the two thestrals pulling her carriage. "Hi guys." She said, feeding them. She stroked their necks, thanking them for pulling her, before hopping in. A few more students joined her, and so they set off. Winnie had hoped to see Maisie before the feat, but she'd catch up with her later.
Entering into the hall, she grinned at the line of first years, hugging one of her neighbors, and wishing them luck. She remembered everyone had been so bung up on getting a certain house, but she'd never really had much of an opinion. Everyone who knew her had been shocked she'd ended up a Gryffindor instead of a Hufflepuff. She found a seat, waving wildly at Hagrid, who gave her a wink and a smile, hidden by his bushy beard. She couldn't wait for the year ahead, she'd been selected to work with the unicorn foals, and was terribly excited. She fell silent as McGonagall spoke, exchanging excited glances with the girl next to her at then mention of the ball. She whooped at the end of McGonagall's speech, giving a loud whistle. As the food appeared, she grinned, immediately diving into the desserts. She glanced up, and jumped up to wave as she saw Maisie looking. She sat back down, and glanced around for anyone she knew.
