"Blizzardclaw will be keeping an eye on you while I'm patrolling," the leader informed her young ones, giving them each an affectionate lick on the top of the head. "You'd best get back to sleep." Turning to her deputy, she touched her muzzle to his shoulder. "Eat and rest, Blizzardclaw, you need it. I'm sure the kits will fall back asleep and be no trouble to you."

T h e calico twitched an ear to acknowledge the introductions between Artemis and Splashfeather. Her claws slid from her white paws into the ground, but she knew she was still weak from earlier - she was in no condition to start a fight, even with such a...strange looking cat. Instead, she nodded in agreement with her fellow warrior. "OakClan won't treat you very kindly for trespassing," she said. She'd managed to put the dots together from Splashfeather's words - this outsider had a hand in helping Bearpaw return home safely. She wasn't particularly fond of outsiders, but most could simply be dealt with by asking them to respect the Clans' scent markers. Still, it was curious - why did she look like this? And why was she so curious about the Clans? Tipping her head to the side, Dappleleaf cast a side glance at Beestar. "We could always take her back to camp, you know...let her talk to Beestar. I don't think she's a threat to us."

R e l i e f washed through the apprentice as Tigerblaze announced that would be the end of their training for the day. Pulling himself off of his backside and to his paws, the jet-black tom dipped his head. "Of course, I'll do better next time," the young tom promised. Still though doubt prickled underneath his pelt. Would he do better next time? He doubted that no matter how strong he became, how hard he trained, he would ever be a match for his mentor. He shook himself out, loosening dust and debris from their scuffle. He smoothed a patch of fur on his shoulder quickly before turning back to the golden tom. "Should we hunt before we go back to camp?" He hoped Tigerblaze would say no - after all, it was so late, and there should be prey enough in the pile already. Still though, he could never tell with Tigerblaze what they might do.

" I t did hurt," Swiftbadger said, placing his paw gingerly back on the ground. He listened to his friend as she talked about Blazepaw, and his eyes brightened at her offer. "I'd love to come along, if Oatleaf doesn't mind." In truth, he didn't spend enough time around the elders. I should be more attentive to them - like Littleflower, he thought, studying the queen before him. His heart fluttered a bit but he dismissed it as a strong sense of admiration for his friend and Clanmate. "It is a shame, yeah. Blazepaw has been through too much already." His gaze briefly flicked to the tom, who was speaking with Darkpaw, before returning to Littleflower. "Well, I'm sure Southstar has the right cat for him in mind."

A s the medicine cats padded off towards the nursery, Deertail watched them. His paws wanted to trot after them, but the ginger-and-white tom stilled himself. He would be there as soon as he had spoken to Southstar; surely nothing would happen in those few moments. The warriors turned towards the tabby leader. "If you aren't too busy now, since we're both already here...if you've finished your meal, of course! I don't want to interrupt." He shifted back and forth on his paws. Foxcloud had put his mind at ease, but he was still nervous over what he'd say to the leader. He feared Southstar would think he was failing his apprentice and his Clan by hovering around his mate all of the time, even though he made sure Darkpaw was trained daily. With the other warriors and the medicine cat having gone off to their own devices, he assumed now that they were alone it would be an opportune time to get it over with.

Sunflare nodded and padded over to the camp entrance to wait. He noticed that Blizzardclaw had helped bring Beestar's kits back to her own den, and couldn't help but wonder if there was anything going on between them. Blizzardclaw seemed to be one of Beestar's closest clanmates, and being her deputy, it was only natural that they spent a lot of time together. Beestar was a little harder to read, but being a tom himself, Sunflare swore there were times when he noticed a certain look in Blizzardclaw's eye, a look that he often had in his own eye before he confessed his love to Creamflower. "What do you think about your father and Beestar?" he asked Weaselstripe suddenly. Weaselstripe was Blizzardclaw's son, after all, so perhaps things were more obvious to him.

Elmshade's words caught Riverstripe off guard slightly. "Oh, yeah, n-no problem," he stuttered. He paused for a moment, then continued hesitantly, "If you don't mind my asking, what did he want to talk you about anyway? It sounded like it was pretty important, but if it was that urgent I don't know why he couldn't have just said it in front of me. We're all clanmates, but he's been treating me like an enemy the whole day."

Splashfeather was surprised by Dappleleaf's suggestion. She hadn't thought her clanmates would be so open to inviting a non-Clan cat to their camp, and she was uncertain about bringing her to their leader after everything that had happened that day. Would Beestar be angry with them? "Well..." she paused and thought for a moment before nodding. "Okay." She wasn't sure how it would go, but Artemis seemed cooperative enough. The worst that would happen would be that Beestar would send her away and Artemis would at least have gotten some sort of answer--although Splashfeather hoped it was a better one than that. "You heard that, Artemis? We're going to introduce you to our leader--if you want, that is."

"I'll hunt myself," Tigerblaze replied to his apprentice, dismissing him with a flick of his tail. "You go on back to camp." He didn't bother to wait for a response before padding away, into the thick of the woods. He was going out to hunt, but he also planned to look for Tinybird; the two had split up to hunt earlier and Tinybird had never returned. There was a chance the younger tom had returned while Tigerblaze and Jackdawpaw had been training, which was why Tigerblaze hadn't said anything about the warrior's disappearance. He didn't want to start a panic over another missing clanmate, especially if Tinybird wasn't actually missing. No, he would simply scent for him while he was out hunting and see if he could find him. If he couldn't, and still wasn't back at camp by the time Tigerblaze returned, well...then there would be more cause for concern.

"Yeah, I'm sure he does too," Littleflower purred. Part of her almost wanted to ask to mentor the young tom herself, but she never liked to interfere directly. Southstar would pick her if he felt she was the right cat for the job, and if he didn't, well, she was sure there'd be other chances in the future. Turning back to Oatleaf, she tilted her head. "That's alright with you if Swiftbadger joins us, right, Oatleaf?"

Southstar cocked his head slightly. Deertail seemed...nervous. He's probably just worried about Foxcloud. "Come on, Deertail, you know me," he purred to his friend, tapping the tom's flank lightly with his tail. "You're never a bother." Though he'd gotten used to it by now, it was still strange to him sometimes, how the clanmates he'd grown up with and trained alongside now treated him like he was above them. He never regretted becoming leader, but part of him did wonder what things would be like if somebody else had, if he had remained a warrior. His role as a leader only made him fear his relations with she-cats being found out even more. If someone found out...He shook his head. "What's on your mind?"

"Lostnight was upset at me because I didn't really stand up for us when Beestar scolded us for going into EagleClan territory." Elmshade shrugged. "We had good intentions, but we broke the warrior code. I think he was having a hard time understanding why we should follow those rules all the time." She wasn't so sure about it herself, anymore. She had grown up with the rules, but Lostnight had joined the clan later. "I don't know why he wouldn't want to talk about it with you around, but maybe he was worried that someone else might think he was betraying the clan or something? For not believing in the warrior code?" She had lowered her voice, not wanting the others to overhear. It certainly was a tough situation. "I'm not sure. Like I said, I'm just sorry you had to get mixed up with all of it."

With that, the leader padded towards the two toms who had gathered. They seemed to be chatting and she hated to interrupt, but she was eager to finish the patrol and return to her kits. "We'll head out, then," she said with a nod to them both. The brown tabby padded towards the camp entrance, her long, ringed tail trailing out behind her. Her ears were alert and angled ahead of the patrol, cautious in light of the recent blight her warriors faced.

A s Tigerblaze's golden shape disappeared into the forest, Jackdawpaw let out a tired sigh. He was always worn out after training with his mentor. Occasionally he wondered what it would be like, to have a gentler, friendlier mentor. He quickly dismissed those thoughts - he wanted to be the best. After all, wasn't Tigerblaze one of the best warriors in the Clan? His skill certainly made it seem so. The jet-black tom lifted his head a bit higher as he entered camp. He opened his jaws, seeking Splashfeather's scent, but realized very quickly it was the strongest around the entrance rather than in camp. With a small shrug to himself, Jackdawpaw headed towards the apprentices' den.

Finding a mate, however, would be her problem - she wasn't particularly good with other cats. As Stagleap mentioned apprentices, she paused. "I don't think I'm ready for an apprentice yet...and I don't know if I will be by the time they're ready. But I bet you'll get one, Stagleap! I bet Streamspot will recommend you to Southstar for one."

D e e r t a i l was comforted by his friend's pleasantness, but there was still a twinge of embarrassment and shame in his voice as he spoke. "It's Darkpaw," the ginger-and-white warrior admitted as he sat down and curled his tail around his paws. "I don't think he enjoys that I'm spending so much time with Foxcloud, really. When I first became his mentor I have more time to devote to him, but now that I have a mate in the nursery...I've been finding a balance between them. I don't think he's appreciated losing any of my time. Perhaps I'm not doing so well at balancing them, after all." Deertail broke of into a small sigh. "Well, he's requested that we assess him. He seems confident he can pass, and insists that he's ready to be a warrior. I'm not so much sure that's what he really wants - I think he's just tired of me, really. Perhaps another mentor would be better to finish his training..." The tom trailed off. He didn't like the thought of it - he thought his apprentice was a bright, tough young cat, and felt as if he had failed him.

She sighed when Littleflower walked away to speak with Swiftbadger, for a moment she thought that that was her way to say that she is not interest to help her, which could be nothing new. If the help she needed didn't go fast or needed some more effort to the others they usually left her to do her own, younger cats didn't have the patience or interest to waste their times to care for some needless elders. So she was rather surprised when the younger she-cat walked back with the tom "hm? If you still want to, I am not forcing either of you to do anything you don't want to do" she meowed to them silently, giving a look over to the sky then to the camp entrance "It's better to leave now before it gets anymore darker" she meowed, to the way so the two could decide themselves if they wanted to join her or not.

He finished the small meal he had there, looking over to the darkening sky enjoying the sights there and the little chilly evening wind, made him feel good too. He was never being a big fan of too hot days and the chilly wind always felt good at his pelt, as long it was not freezing like in leaf-bares.

Creamflower watches Sunflare leave the nursery and looks back at Poppykit and Dustkit, smiling. I wonder what they will be like as apprentices? she thought. Im sure only time will tell! With that happy thought in her mind, she lays her head down, closes her eyes, and falls asleep.

"Oh, I see." Riverstripe flicked his tail thoughtfully. He didn't doubt what Elmshade had said, but despite her explanation, he still couldn't help but distrust Lostnight. Wanting to talk in private was one thing, but disrespecting authority, refusing to hunt during leaf-bare, and showing unwarranted hostility towards a clanmate and treating them as if they'd interrupted something simply by being there was another. Riverstripe decided it was best to forget about it for the time being though. "Well, it's not your fault," he sighed at last. "Things happen. Anyway...it's getting late now, and I've already eaten, so I think I'm going to head to my nest." Rising to his paws, he stretched each of his legs before turning and starting to make his way towards the warriors' den, only to stop suddenly. "Hey, by the way...Can I ask you something?"

"I--" Sunflare broke off with a nod as Beestar approached, and quickly padded after her. "Kind of late for a patrol, huh?" he observed once they'd exited camp, swiveling his ears as he walked. "Not that I mind," he added quickly. "After all that's happened today, a normal patrol like this is kind of relaxing."

"I see..." Southstar murmured thoughtfully as he listened to Deertail's words, nodding as the ginger-and-white tom went on. But when the tom mentioned giving his apprentice another mentor, Southstar shook his head. "Nonsense," he assured Deertail without hesitation. "It's never easy to balance your duties as a warrior or a mentor with those of a mate or a father...It's one of the reasons I've never taken a mate myself." Permanently, at least, he added silently. "But from what I can tell, you've done a wonderful job of it, Deertail. I see you take Darkpaw out every day for training, so I know you're not neglecting him--and the mere fact that you're concerned about this shows me that you care." He glanced in the direction of the apprentices' den. "Darkpaw's not a bad tom, but he is needy, even if he doesn't think so. The thing about needy cats though, is that they're never fully satisfied unless all their needs are met all the time...and that's just not realistic. I don't think Darkpaw really wants to get away from you; I think it's the opposite. He wants your attention, but he can't have it all the time, and he's too proud to admit that he wants it at all--so he's trying to run away instead." Realizing that he'd gone on too long, he suddenly turned back to Deertail and added, "Or at least, that's what it looks like to me anyway. But you're his mentor, and I'm sure you know him better than I do." He touched his tail to Deertail's shoulder. "That's why I'm going to leave this one up to you. If you think he's ready, both physically and emotionally, then I'll have you assess him. But only if you really think so, not just because he wants it, okay?"

"Of course we want to," Littleflower purred in response to Oatleaf. "You're not forcing us to do anything. What's so strange about wanting to spend some time with you?" She bumped the elder's flank lightly with her own. Following her gaze to the darkening sky, she nodded. "Yeah, you're right, we should get going. Lead the way, Oatleaf!"
