Cloverkit wiggled his behind. His enemy, a leaf with a particularly mean appearance, lay unsuspecting in front of him. Bunching his muscles, he prepared to jump. Suddenly, a shadow soared over the camp as he leaped. He felt two paws shove his side, and he felt Violetkit tackle him to the ground, covering his body with hers.
“What are you doing?” Cloverkit cried, trying to push his sister off.
“There was a bird!” She gasped, burying her face in his neck “I thought it was coming to get you!” Cloverkit rolled his eyes and shimmied out from beneath her hold. Looking up, he saw a little robin perched in the grand willow at the center of camp.
“It was a robin.” He scoffed, but Violetkit was still wild-eyed.
“So?” She hissed “You know what happened to Smallsika, I don’t want you getting eaten, too!” Cloverkit lashed his tail and stuck his nose in the air.
“I’m smarter than that dingbat was! I know to never upset the Guardian like that!” He stated proudly “What was she thinking, killing a sacred bird?” Violetkit shifted anxiously.
“It’s not just birds I’m worried about, Cloverkit!” She urged “You’re so careless. Always exploring places that even an apprentice wouldn’t! You’re going to get hurt one day, and I don’t know what I would do without you!” The young tom’s ears fell in shame. He licked his sister on the cheek.
“I’m sorry, Violetkit.” Cloverkit murmured “I promise I’ll try to be more safe.” Violetkit nodded, but he could tell she wasn’t quite convinced. “Tell you what.” He added “We can spend the rest of the day doing whatever you want! If you want to nap, we’ll nap! If you want to ask Agaricthroat for stories, we can do that too!” The she-kit’s ears perked up and a small smile formed on her muzzle.
“Really?”
“Yea!”
Violetkit tilted her head in consideration. “Can we go see what Weaselstar is up to?” She asked “I know he promised to tell Zinniakit about his time before being leader. She told me about it, and it sounds really interesting!” Excitement bubbled in Cloverkit’s chest. A story about adventure? Of course he would go! He nodded eagerly, the two collected Zinniakit, and the group walked excitedly towards the leader’s den.

“I thought the rain was done.” Newtpaw grumbled. He shifted his weight, and pressed closer to the other apprentices who were huddling under a solid tree.
“I dunno,” Swanpaw mused, pressing herself closer to Newtpaw “it’s not that bad.”
“If we run fast enough, I’m sure we could get back to camp without getting completely soaked.” Greenpaw thought out loud. Featherpaw giggled.
“Not all of us have your long legs, Greenpaw.” She pointed out “We’d better just wait it out.”
“Who knows how long that’ll be.” Newtpaw scoffed. Canispaw, who was in the middle of the group, had a sly smile. “What’s that look for?” Newtpaw asked. The younger apprentice didn’t answer. Instead, Canispaw lunged out of the shelter and skidded through a large puddle, splashing Newtpaw with a burst of water. Swanpaw gasped and burst into a fit of laughter. Newtpaw stood rigidly as water dripped off his angular face.
“You did not just-” He started, but decided to abandon all words and playfully tackled Canispaw into the muddied ground.
“Ah!” Canispaw laughed, worming around in the puddles to escape Newtpaw’s grasp. Greenpaw smirked and dragged Featherpaw and Swanpaw into the rain, hopping around the puddles and seeing who could produce the largest splash. The sound of the rain was competed with by the cries of laughter and fun that rippled through the clearing.
When the rain stopped, the four completely soaked apprentices trudged back to camp.
“Do you think Droserathorn will have a fit?” Swanpaw asked Newtpaw, fur clumped with mud.
“Nah, we were having fun. Not that he knows what that’s like.” He chuckled, receiving a laugh from the rest of the group. As they came into camp, though, it was Oleanderpaw who saw them first. One look and the she-cat was puffed up. She marched up to them, going to Canispaw first.
“What did you do?” She demanded “I thought we agreed you would try to not hurt yourself for a single moon. Do you realize how sick you could get from playing in the rain?” Her gaze snapped to Newtpaw. “I expected this from him, but not from you!” Newtpaw huffed.
“Oh please, Ollie, it’s not that bad.”
Oleanderpaw flattened her ears. “Don’t call me that.” She grumbled.
“What? Ollie?”
“Shut up!”
“Ollie! Ollie! Ollie!”
Oleanderpaw hissed at him and prepared to tackle her brother, but Droserathorn quickly arrived.
“Will you two stop acting like kits and get to my den already?” He told them “Seriously, you’re almost adults; behave!” Oleanderpaw wrinkled her nose at her brother, and he stuck out his tongue in response. Newtpaw, Swanpaw, Greenpaw, and Featherpaw all reluctantly followed the shaman, but his apprentice stuck out a paw before Canispaw could follow.
“I’m personally going to treat you.” She muttered. Canispaw smirked.
“Missed me that much, huh?”
“No, I’m making sure I never have to see you in my den again.” She huffed “Come one, it would be a real shame if you caught greencough and died.” Canispaw chuckled, and Oleanderpaw gave a small grin. “Idiot.” She muttered.
“Jerk.” Canispaw shot back. The she-cat rolled her eyes and led him to the shaman’s den.

Agaricthroat gasped severely as soon as he saw Jaguarslip stumble through the camp entrance. He was struggling to hold down three very rambunctious kits. He knew Ibisheart gave birth to six kits, and using their powers, so all the kits would share both Jaguarslip and Seismicwhisper’s genes. But Jaguarslip wouldn’t let Agaricthroat or Haypelt see any of the kits until they had met their other father. Agaricthroat was sad he couldn’t meet all six, but three would be plenty for Jaguarslip to handle, since he already made sure his friends promised to help him rear his kits.
“You’re back!” Haypelt purred, raising his head from his nap “How’d it go.” Jaguarslip purred and settled down next to the group, gently setting the small kits down.
“Great!” He sighed “I miss Seismicwhisper so much, but I’m so happy we got to meet all of our kits.”
“Have you decided on names?” Agaricthroat asked eagerly, creening his head to get a better look.
“We settled on a fire theme.” He revealed “Meet Coalkit, Magmakit, and Wispkit!” The new father pointed to each one of his kits in turn.
“They’re so cute!” Haypelt squealed “You have little clones!” Magmakit opened her jaws in a wide yawn, blinking her eyes open. “Wow!” the warrior gasped “Her eyes are beautiful!”
“I’ve never seen such a deep shade of orange!” Agaricthroat quipped.
“Yea, that’s where the ‘magma’ comes from.” Jaguarslip explained “Coalkit’s brother is named Charbonkit, which is ‘coal’ in French. Seismic and I thought it would be cute if they matched. Wispkit’s splashes of white reminded me of this old legend I heard. Will-O-Wisps help travelers find their destination. I want this little guy to be courageous and a leader, so Wispkit it was.” The tom looked lovingly down at his three kits, who were curled up against his chest.
“They’re amazing, Jaguarslip.” Agaricthroat gasped “Ibisheart must be really tired.” Jaguarslip nodded.
“They need a nap, but after I was going to thank her profusely.” He chuckled “I can’t thank them enough...they made our dreams come true.” His eyes were still glued to his precious bundles, and the two other toms gave each other a knowing look.
“We’ll let you have a few moments with them.” Haypelt said gently, nuzzling his friend.
“Let us know if you need anything.” Agaricthroat meowed, giving him a lick on the ear.
“I love you guys.” Jaguarslip yawned “Thank you.” He rested his head on his paws, and fell asleep with his kits. The two awake toms smiled at each other and walked away.
“So you’re the last one without kits.” Agaricthroat meowed coyly.
“Shut up.” Haypelt huffed, blush creeping to his cheeks.

The rain had finally let up for a few hours, and Droserathorn decided to make the most of it. He had left Oleanderpaw behind again, since she had needed to take care of “the idiot”, even though the tom had no clue what she meant. He needed to do some herb collecting, and Riversnap had been cooped up in the nursery all day. So, the shaman led his mate and his new kits through the fern-ridden path.
“I found a ravine the other day.” He meowed “There were some plants growing, but they weren’t quite ready to pick yet. They should be good now, though!” Riversnap purred and rubbed up against him, careful not to trip over the small kits racing between her paws.
“Dewkit, please don’t push your sister.” She scolded gently.
“Yes, mama.” The kit responded, but gently nudged Flarekit again. Droserathorn chuckled lightly, and continued on his path.
The gang eventually reached the ravine.
“You can stay up here.” Droserathorn told Riversnap, grunting as he made his way to a lower level. Riversnap shrugged.
“Do you think we could come down?” She asked, leaning over the edge to look at her mate “It looks like it could be fun to explore.”
“I’m sure it would be fine. The walls aren’t that steep, just make sure the kits are careful around the bumps and such.”
The she-cat nodded and picked up Dewkit by the scruff and allowed Flarekit to settle on her back. She slid down the smooth rock and joined her mate. It wasn’t long before the group was at the bottom. The ravine was relatively shallow, but it would be impossible to jump out. Luckily, the bottom was flat and wide, so it gave the kits plenty of room to scurry about. The shaman nosed through green leaves, and nipped them at the stalk.
A loud crash interrupted the family’s activities. A sound as loud as thunder rippled through the air, and all of the cats froze. Suddenly, Droserathorn could feel the rock beneath him start to tremble. The sound of rushing water grew louder and louder, filling his ears. It was only a few seconds until the tom saw a wall of overflowing water rushing through the ravine, headed straight towards his family.
Droserathorn immediately sprung into action. He leaped onto the closest ledge and pressed himself against the wall. Riversnap prepared to throw the kits up to him, but Flarekit slipped from her grasp. The small scrap of fur fell to her paws, and had trouble clinging to the wall. The water came much quicker than expected, and a large wave carried Riversnap off her paws.
“Mama!” Flarekit cried, struggling to keep her head above the water. The mother lunged at her. She bit at the water, and her jaws eventually closed around her daughter’s scruff. She powered through the rushing water, scooping up Dewkit on her way. She pulled herself up onto the ledge below Droserathorn’s.
“Come on,” he urged Dewkit “Come on, reach out buddy I’m here!” The small kit stretched as far as he could, but it was no use. He couldn’t reach.
“Maybe I can come up there.” Riversnap shouted, making her voice just audible above the rushing water. But she didn’t have the time to. Droserathorn watched as a massive wave crashed around the bend of the ravine. He locked eyes with his mate, and pressed himself against the bottom of the ledge, straining his arm to reach his beloved family.
“Please, Riversnap!” He cried “Grab my paw! Please!” But it was too late. By the time she moved, the wave ripped through the canyon. Droserathorn watched in horror as Riversnap and his kits were torn away by the swirling, hungry rapids.
Droserathorn couldn’t believe it. His fur was soaked from the water, but he managed to cling on to his ridge. Every part of him felt numb. As he walked down the edge of the ravine, where it evened out to form a small river, he desperately hoped that somehow his family would be alive. In his gut, though, he knew that couldn’t be true.
His fears were confirmed when he saw three wet masses sprawled out on the muddy riverbank. He paused, instantly recognizing Riversnap’s spotted fur. He felt his lip tremble, and his paws heavily moving, but his brain was empty as he stumbled to his mate’s body. Blood was trickling from the back of her head, from where she must have hit a rock. His legs shook as he looked over her, thudding down on the ground. He felt weak, helpless, defeated, and lost. Riversnap was dead. How could he have taken them there? He should have known better. His heart sank as he realized he would have to go back to camp. Maybe he could run away. No, his other kits needed him. Oh, Guardian, his other kits! What would he tell Oleanderpaw, Newtpaw, and Seedpaw? They would blame him, he knew it, and he deserved it. He was a shaman. He was supposed to save cats, not lead them to their deaths.
A rattling breath tore him from his thoughts. His eyes snapped to where Dewkit was sprawled, his tiny chest barely moving. Hope sparked in Droserathorn’s chest as he leaped to his son.
“It’s okay, Dewkit.” He soothed “Papa’s here, it’s okay, everything is going to be okay.” He furiously licked his fur, trying to warm him up. The father pressed his ear to the kit’s chest, and he could hear liquid in the lungs. Raising a paw, he pumped the kit’s body, trying to force up the water. But it was no use. Dewkit was shivering, and his breaths grew shorter and more spaced out. It wasn’t long before Droserathorn was trying to revive the stone-cold, stiff body of his son. That was the breaking point. He ran to Riversnap’s body and pressed himself against her side, pulling the bodies of his kits to his chest. He felt everything inside of him shatter. Throwing his head back, he let out a piercing wail. They were gone. Riversnap and his kits were dead. And now, Droserathorn had to bury the love of his life.
