@Blossom: Okay yeah, it’s a small distinction, but it IS a thing. Essentially this: Alpha's mate's orders trumps Beta in the absence of an Alpha, and essentially acts as a secondary Alpha, while Beta acts as an authority figure all the same, and as an advisor who helps make decisions for the Pack. Alpha's mate does not have much say in making changes and decisions for the Pack. Of course, the exception to this is unless the Alpha has said so. However, after the death or retirement of an Alpha, it is the Beta who succeeds them, rather than their mate.
