ahh ok so- im super interested in fursuits and all that ish and really want to try making one, but i wouldnt consider myself a furry (if that makes any sense).
im still fairly young so i dont have a job or any source of money just yet so id have to ask my mum about it. shes a really crafty person so im sure she wouldnt have too much of an issue with it but she would want to know why and what a fursuit is etc. id have to explain to her what a furry is and shed most likely ask if i am one which i would answer no- which could confuse her.

ive been putting off asking her for a while now because i dont know if its normal for someone who isnt a furry to make fursuits so im not sure what to do rip

Don’t really have to explain what a furry is. You don’t have to be a furry to be a fursuiter. If you’re uncomfortable with it, just say mascot or costume instead. Several mascotters have a custom suit with a character, but they don’t classify as a furry/fursuiter. But since you’re young with no money source, you should just wait a few years or however long it is until you can get your own job and support your own interest. No sense using someone else’s money on a costume/fursuit you will grow out of. Fur suits can be super expensive to make,
But you can also make them with household items.
If you REALLY want to make one you can use items around your house such as old fur blankets, memory foam mattress pads, old pillows, etc. just to learn. And if you don’t want to do that, I recommend setting up an Instagram to sell art/items you make until you have the money for fursuit supplies.
If you’re too ashamed/scared to explain what a furry/fursuit is you probably shouldn’t be making one.
Not trying to discourage just trying to say the truth. There’s no harm explaining what a furry is, and you do not need to identify as one to own a mascot/suit. However, if you have multiple characters you create and draw or use to role play with, chances are you are a furry. It’s kind a a gray area on what is and isn’t a furry, everyone has their own idea. Some say they’re not but do everything that someone who is a furry would do.

im not ashamed or scared at all, i support the community a lot and actually am friends with someone whos a furry, just thinking it might confuse her and complicate it. as i said she is a really crafty person and was thinking i could suggest it and me and her could work on it together like we do with most projects she comes up with.
i dont roleplay or anything like that, i really only collect and buy character designs that i could base suits off of (because im not very imaginative myself oops) but dont name them or do anything more with them. i have quite a few characters that have just been sitting on my computer for a few months now.

i just think these big cute fluffy suits are really cool and something id be interested in making and maybe selling if i get good at it, to earn some extra money and give me something productive to do in my free time. ive been stalking this thread for a long time and love seeing all the suits you guys work on. theyre all really creative and individual in their own way and id love to be able to make something like that ❤

Honestly, I don't really see how that doesn't make you a furry? Not every furry roleplays, not even every furry has a specific character they consider a fursona. Broken down to its absolute basics, being a furry is having some sort of interest in anthropomorphic animal characters. That's really about it. Which is why you see so many different types of people in the furry fandom - some of them are roleplayers, some of them are fursuiters, some of them are interested in furries because they liked the anthro characters in disney cartoons and some of them are interested in furries because they liked the characters and fursuits they saw online or at cons.
At the end of the day the issue of calling yourself a furry vs not calling yourself a furry is way overblown imo. It's not an issue of identity or aligning yourself with a certain group of people or anything dramatic, it's just using the best word available to describe a hobby.

But moving on from that -- If you do, for whatever reason, feel the need to explain to her what a furry is, I'd just keep it short and sweet and relevant to your project. You could just mention it as a hobby where some people create custom mascot-like costumes of characters they created, like a halloween costume they wear to events year-round, just because it's a fun style of wearable art.

If your mom likes the idea, I'd say go for it! If you both create arts & crafts together, it could be a fun project for you both to work on, and she could help you get the hang of different techniques that could start you off on the right foot to start making suits to sell, if that turns out to be something that interests you. The other person was right that making fursuits can be pretty expensive, but a simpler design isn't unrealistically pricey. For your first suit, I would definitely try to simplify it as much as you can - don't use a lot of fur colors or designs, because this will mean more fur to buy and will be more difficult to sew. If you can, look for people reselling foam, fur, or even parts like eyes that they decided they wouldn't be using for their own suits. You can also save money by using scissors instead of clippers to shave, but that technique is a lot harder to do well. And definitely use tutorials! If I were you I would start looking through tutorials now, before you even commit to the project; find a tutorial you want to use, figure out which design you want to make, and start looking into where you would buy the supplies and mark down what you would need. That way you can have a rough price estimate in mind when you talk to your mom about it, so the two of you can decide if that's within your budget or not.

i understand that, i was just trying to mention specifically the different points clover brought up. my friend is a furry and doesnt do a majority of that stuff either. when i started looking into fursuits i did consider that i might be part of the fandom, but it just isnt something that really interests me. i am a major animal lover but not really to that extent i guess? just all these big, fluffy, colourful, teddy bear looking suits are really cute to me! i really hope all this makes since rip. not great with my words if you hadnt noticed from my last two posts aha-

but other than that thank you, that really helps a lot. im not the best at explaining things and tend to complicate stuff so i was just nervous itd confuse my mum and shed say no to the idea because she didnt fully understand, but ill keep all that in mind if i do ask her. ill definitely look into it some more and try and save up some money if i do decide to go ahead with it. thanks again ^^;

I haven't posted here in a while and never made any real posts, so here i goooo
I'm getting a fursuit head! I searched a bit on Etsy and managed to get a $48 head. It's a rat, although my favorite animal is an opossum, so i'm probably gonna change up the species. It comes with art, and the listing creator has some cute art from what i saw, so i am excited. It should be coming on about June 18 at most i think, and i'll be out of school by then so it'll be fun to be able to vibe with it in the summer! (even if i can't go outside (Ｔ▽Ｔ) )
I'll post a photo of it when i get it. (ㅇㅅㅇ❀)
