"Watch it!"
A young boy eight years old snapped back the reins. Cillian nearly ended up in a rear end collision with his father's Quarter Horse. Who was notoriously a cranky horse to work with, even for a cowboy like Boot O'Riordan. They were herding the cattle, as every day on the ranch went. Aisling insisted she'd be out with a very special horse. It must've been at least an hour now, considering how far the sun had moved since they'd started working.
Suddenly, a sparkling purple pegacorn galloped past them.
Now that, you don't see every day. His sister was riding it, and he had no idea how she was a better herder than him. She didn't even want to be a cowgirl! With her, they got four times the amount of work done in half the time.
They took a break before herding the rest. He dismounted and cautiously approached the glimmering steed. It was very gentle, and didn't move as he touched its fur. It felt soft as minky. He could cuddle with it all day. They looked each other in the eyes. It touched its horn to his forehead but it didn't feel right. It was soft, not hard.
He woke with a start, to the sound of his sister's laughter. In his hands was his sister's My Little Pony plush. He threw it at her head and flushed. He knew it was a bad idea to let her pick out the movie. Wouldn't be the first time he'd dreamed of unicorns because of his sister. Probably wouldn't be the last either. He sighed and yelped when his sister pulled him into a hug.

"Happy Birthday, Cilly!"
His embarrassed frown flipped. "Happy Birthday, Ash!"
They both got out of their pajamas and into daytime clothes. She carefully looked around the hallways. It was before the roosters started to crow, and their parents weren't up yet. She smiled and tiptoed toward the back door. Her brother winked at her and zipped his lips. As usual, he wouldn't tell on her. Ah, the benefits of being twins.
Once they'd cleared the squeaky door, they walked back to the chicken coop. Her friend was already awake, to her delight. Fawkes paced by the coop's door, the Phoenix rooster's tail trailing behind each strut. The minute they'd gotten him, she fell in love. Though belonging to her parents, everyone agreed he's definitely hers. Especially since she's the only one he wouldn't peck. She opened the latch and grabbed Fawkes. The rooster crowed so loud, the twins both jumped. So much for being quiet.
By the time they got back inside, the lights were on and both parents waiting with knowing smiles. She sheepishly grinned.
"Aisling, you know the rules," Her dad shook his head.
"But, Dad!" she whined, "It's my birthday! Mom said she's let me do anything I wanted today! Right, mom?"
Her dad stared at her mom. "Tierney, did you really say that?"
"No, I told her she could do anything she wanted, with permission. She must not have heard that part."
Boot sighed, smiling. "She never does. My little rebel."

They all gathered in the living room. Boot was relieved. He thought he'd have mutiny, but then his wife suggested they take Charlie out of the dog pen and put Fawkes in there. It was a great idea, he couldn't disagree with that. So they let the golden retriever out to run free and give out kisses, while the clucking thing was relegated to its own space.
He walked over to the record player. No matter how many times he looked through the record cabinet, he couldn't find what he was looking for. Then he found it and laughed. He'd played it so much, it was right next to the player itself! Very convenient if he'd known it was there. He set it onto the turntable and pressed play.
"Not Pretty Woman again!" Aisling howled.
"It's a birthday party! All birthdays need music!" He called back.
Cillian wandered over to him. "Isn't this Van Halen?"
He ruffled the boy's hair. "No, this is the original. It's by Roy Orbison."
The song was very dear to him. He'd always loved the oldies of rock and roll ; as most kids, he latched onto the music of his parents. Not a day went by without the songs from the old legends being played in the background. He came from a family of music lovers. Pretty Woman was especially close to his heart. It was playing over the radio where he and Tierney had their first kiss.
No matter how much the kids grumbled, he wasn't going to shut it off.

While the children objected to their father's choice in music, Tierney went to grab out their presents. She came out with two fairly light boxes. The paper was red, green, and white ; leftovers from Christmas. "Kids, birthday presents!"
They immediately scrambled over to the table to open their gifts. For a moment they were perplexed on how alike the presents looked. Then they tore into them like actually was Christmas. They were mortified when they saw what it was. Matching western clothes. Hats, fringes, chaps, boots, and all. The outfits were covered in their mom's gaudy embroidery.
"Thank you so much, Mom," they said in unison. "Not again," they added, looking at each other mortified again ; they've always finished each others sentences but they'd never both said something at once.
Tierney smiled. She was so happy they both loved their gifts. The image of them both wearing the entire outfits was an adorable one and she couldn't wait to see them standing in front of her with them on. They'd be great little ranchers when they grew up, she was very sure of that.
She never noticed the smiles weren't quite as happy as she'd thought, and that she'd never see them both wear the outfits at the same time. Or in Aisling's case, at all.
