I like the Impressionists. Renoir and Cassatt mostly, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec also. The way that he--and all the Impressionists--used colour is so genius and I marvel at their work, really. But I also like the pre-Raphaelites, I think that Waterhouse is my favourite. He had a very recognizable style and I think that his depictions of women in harmony with nature communicate something so beautiful that I don’t think I can vocalize. Klimt and Schiele inspire me a lot too, the Vienna Secession. Schiele’s work is obviously very acclaimed but I think it’s so fascinating--his work is so personal and I think that it really truly shows you exactly who he was, all his self-portraits and his interpretation of the human body, of movement. Also American artists like Leyendecker and Rockwell. Leyendecker especially. He influenced Rockwell a lot but his style appeals to me more. And I like art like theirs because a lot of it was commercial, yes, but it showed this very--idealistic version of American life, it reflected ideas of what society then wanted to be, and I’m very enamoured by that. Oh and--I don’t like realism very much, but as a portraitist and an impressionist and also for his skill in depicting character and personality so well on canvas, I love Sargent. Sorry for talking this much. My taste isn’t very consistent. I think I like art a bit too much.
