Bravepaw nodded, that was true normally they tried to match how many warriors to apprentices. Crowthorn winced as he was rolled over and he released his grip on the tom to pull himself back up. His shoulder hurt a bit, but he ignored the pain as he lashed out at the tom's face.

"Border patrol," Hawkeye responded simply. She followed the tom's gaze first to Marigoldpaw, then to Ivythorn, and saw his ears flatten when he laid eyes on the she-cat. She knew he wasn't particularly fond of Ivythorn due to her prickly personality, and she could understand why. Still, she wanted this patrol to be enjoyable for everyone. She flattened one ear when Rayfeather mentioned the younger warrior looking grumpy. That's not going to help. "I think we're all just a bit tired still," she offered. "But patrolling will help to wake us up. Come on, let's start heading out." She led the cats over to the camp entrance, but stopped to wait there for Fogsprint and his apprentice.

"Of course she can handle us," Sunpaw defended her mentor as they padded after the warrior. "As long as we don't cause any trouble for her." She allowed the scents of the forest to flood her mouth and nose as they walked along, and stopped when her mentor did. At the mention of squirrel, she nodded eagerly. "Yeah, me too! It must be close by." Not waiting for a response, she began to follow the scent, keeping her nose in the air to guide her.

Foxcloud's words caught Timberfoot off guard and pierced his heart like a claw. He didn't particularly agree with Leopardpaw's sense of humor, but Timberfoot hadn't thought he'd said anything that bad. Did Foxcloud really think he had done a poor job teaching his apprentice? It made him feel like a failure as a mentor. "I know it was just a joke," he told his apprentice gently, trying not to let his wounded pride show, "but just try to think about how they might sound to others before you make them, okay?" He didn't think Leopardpaw meant any harm and didn't want to rebuke his apprentice too harshly, but he also didn't want Foxcloud to think that he was a careless mentor.

Even from the back of the patrol, Darkflower could tell right away that something wasn't right. Her Clanmates had stopped and were looking up at something in a pine tree, and she noticed the fur along some of their backs rise, as well as a hiss from Jaywing. Pushing her way to the front, just behind Southwind, she caught a glimpse of a tail just as it disappeared into the treetops and instinctively let out a hiss. She took a step forward, then another, clearly wanting to go after him.

Southwind scented the tom before he saw him, and stopped next to Swiftstep when she did. "He hasn't crossed the border," he pointed out, but he knew that probably meant nothing to Swiftstep and Jaywing, who seemed about ready to pick a fight at any moment. His ears flattened when he heard his sister's hiss from behind. Not her too! he thought in annoyance. Why did their patrol have to be comprised of some of the worst-tempered cats in the clan? Furthermore, why were there so many bad-tempered cats in the Clan anyway? Everyone needs to settle down, find a mate and have some kits.

Kestrelclaw frowned at the sudden hostility among his Clanmates. He knew it was only natural to be defensive at the sight of a loner, but he doubted this one tom was a threat, however close he may be. "Calm down," he told his Clanmates. "Let's not start a fight unnecessarily." Instead of watching the tom in the trees he simply re-marked the border--to him, scent markers spoke the loudest. Most cats, even those who strayed close to the border, typically turned back if they smelled fresh Clan scent.

Badgerlight purred softly at Waspecho's words, it was part of why she really wanted him as a mate. He was truly wonderful and caring, she loved him and couldn't wait for their kits to love him too. " A l l right," Redfeather said, dipping his head. He bounded off, nearer to the small cottages that sat from this point down to the mountain's base along PineClan territory. Rows of fencing blocked the cottage from the pine forest, and for the most part, their gates were closed. One was open, and there was the dog - it was tied up now, though. His fur bristled as he watched it scratch itself from the underbrush. It was a small dog, and a patrol could handle it if it got loose.
The ginger tom trotted back to Lightningwing. "Found our dog," he said. "Its Twolegs have it tethered to the ground. And it's tiny - we could send it yapping home with a few scratches, if it got loose."

B i r d p a w thought his heart would explode before he arrived at camp, but with a final burst of strength, he exploded into camp. He went tumbling with the kit. He rolled slightly, letting go of his grip on her neck, trying not to hurt her. Once he'd regained himself, he slammed his paw down on her tail, trying to be firm but gentle.
Petalstar leaped from her perch, bounding towards him. "What in StarClan's name is going on?"
Birdpaw sat panting for a moment, trying to regain his breath. "I'm...not sure. We were chasing out a rogue and his kit, but...Crowthorn grabbed her, passed her to me...I didn't know what else to do." His words came out in a wheezing jumble as he tried to tell her what happened.
Petalstar narrowed her eyes at the kit, then Birdpaw. "And you thought the best thing to do was to bring it here? Into our camp? What if it's a rogue with friends, friends that think their kit was just kidnapped?" Birdpaw's shoulders sagged with exhaustion, and Petalstar sighed. "You did what you thought was best. We'll keep an eye on the kit until the patrol reports back." She glanced around anxiously, looking for cats in camp. She spotted Hawkeye's patrol - it was large, and about to head out. "Hawkeye, Rabbitfur!" she called out, beckoning with her tail, urgency in her tone.

F o x c l o u d didn't wait any longer. As Timberfoot fell back with Leopardpaw, she began to lead the patrol out of the camp. She led the patrol towards the river. Once at the bank, she began following it down towards the pool of water at the base of the mountain. She knew hunting was always good there - small mammals flocked to the pool to drink, and birds often fished out the schools of minnows and other small fish. Once at the pool, she stopped. "All right," she said, turning to face them. "Let's split up and hunt."

J a y w i n g glanced at Swiftstep. "What?" He asked her bluntly, moving up from his place near the back, heading toward her side. When he spotted the tom in the tree, he broke into a hiss, the fur along his spine rising menacingly. His back arched and his body lowered into a crouch, ready to fight if he had to. He had only seen the tom's tail as it disappeared further up, but he could scent him, and kept his gaze focused on the pine.
He twitched an ear to acknowledge Kestrelclaw's words, though he didn't take his eyes off of the tree the tom was in, simply staring at it while marking a clump of grass.

Badgerlight purred softly at Waspecho's words, it was part of why she really wanted him as a mate. He was truly wonderful and caring, she loved him and couldn't wait for their kits to love him too.
