With the sun high in the sky, Akida lie basking above his family's den. The weather was starting to warm which meant the valley was busier than normal. When summer came around it would only get busier. The herds would be passing through for this or that reason and would stop by the central pond Kamwe Kuisha. The pond never emptied so it was a hot spot for travelers and caravans for a refreshing drink during those warmer months. The prince looked over the land spotting a large bird flying over the plain. Whether it was a crane or heron, he couldn't really determine.
His eyes continued to wander over the region moving from visitors to residents. The lions that lived in the valley were many. It was so many they had started to branch out into the surrounding regions. One of the founders sons, Kamili, held rule over the snowy region of Msitu wa Baridi. Akida supposed that Kamili was a prince in his own right being the son of the founding queen. The second region under the prides control, Kikoa cha Zamani, was under the rule of the newest lord, Elewisa. He was the youngest son to the healer and one of the knights. The prince felt having other families holding lordship over the surrounding areas was better than having himself or either of his siblings running it. If something were to happen, there wouldn't be anyone left to take over. He looked out again at those wandering the region and smiled gently.

Kamili sat beside the lake as the sun lowered. His thoughts ran as he tried to sort them. A few nights ago he had talked with Chausiku in this very spot. They spoke about why she snuck out in the night and slept well into the day. That and he offered to help her adjust. He still wasn't quite sure how to go about that but it seemed it didn't matter much as they hadn't talked since. His chest seemed to tighten as he remembered that fire in her gaze. Even in the pale light of the moon he could see the bright flickering behind her eyes. What could that look have possibly meant...?
"My lord?"
He blinked hard as the voice pulled him out of his thoughts. Turning he spotted his scout, Tishala. She nodded her head in greeting before stepping closer. "Tishala. What can I do for you?"
The lioness took a moment to gather her thoughts and catch her breath. "There's something you must see. During my scouting, I happened upon something rather unusual."
He didn't like the sound of this but nodded his head. "Lead the way."
She led him up the far mountains, the snow piled high and trees bare except for the blanket of flakes on exposed branches. At a rather large open area on the mountain side, they stopped as she pointed out her concern. His head lifted a little higher. It was like the ruins but more complete. "How close did you get?"
"Not much more than this. I didn't want to risk getting caught."
"Good. For now, let's keep the pride away from these mountains. I'll send Tambika to the valley with a message requesting advice from the king."
"Understood."

Mosiyah glanced at her reflection in the lake, her mane falling over her face to just barely cover her eyes. She wasn't expecting to grow a mane as she got older. It seemed to be a surprise to her mother also. Well, the mother who was here in the pride. Tishala. She didn't really know her other mother and when she asked about her, Tishala would simply push it off as nothing more than a fling. The maned lioness looked around the lake at the trees and snow. It was cold but it was home. She grew up here. She'd been to the valley once or twice, the last time being just before her run through the coming of age ceremony. Being used to the colder side of things, she found the valley to be unbearably warm.
She started walking around the lake when someone caught her attention. Kito, the head knight which ultimately made him her boss, stepped passed the treeline. She raised an brow at him. "What brings you out here?"
"Am I not allowed to wander my own home?"
She rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress the grin. "That doesn't exactly answer my question."
He hopped onto one of the rocks in the lake closest to the shore. "I wanted to check on my newest recruit."
"I'm your only recruit."
He hopped another stone. "I suppose you're right. Still, I wanted to check on you."
She watched as he jumped another two stones nearly to the center of the lake. Some part of her wanted to see him fall in merely for amusement. Undoubtedly the water was freezing so there was also a part of her that hoped he could keep his balance. "You plan to check on me from all the way over there?"
"No. Just doing this for fun."
"Or showing off."
At that he glanced up in her direction with a cheeky grin. That got him another eye roll and a shake of her head. Such a boy. They hadn't worked together long. He had obviously gotten used to doing things by himself. Even so, he was quite the flirt. Nothing she couldn't handle. She was quick to turn it back on him, usually. Sometimes she'd catch his bluff. He definitely liked things done his way. Anything else, he wasn't really committed to. She liked him. Not in a romantic way. She thought he was a fun guy to hang out with. She could tell they were going to be good friends.

"Come on! We're almost there."
The energetic little cub bounced ahead of Sanaa. He had made mention about a "really cool place" so now she was following him to this unknown location. She had discovered the cub just a few days ago. She had brought him to her brother, Elewisa as it was his decision on what to do. Of course he had agreed they should take the cub in since there wasn't any sign of his parents nor did the cub remember them. He was still too young to fend for himself no matter what he said. So for the time being, Sanaa was stuck babysitting him. The cub, Jel he said his name was, liked accompanying her on her rounds of the region. Said he liked the adventure. Most if not all days nothing happened but who was she to deny him the opportunity of possible adventure.
The cub led her up to some familiar ruins. She raised a brow at him. "You wanted to show me jaribio ruins?" When Jel gave her a confused look, she explained. "All the cubs come to these ruins when they reach eighteen months old and complete a number of tasks. Some here at the ruins and some in another region, but this is where it all starts. It's the ritual that decides your rank in the pride."
"Oh. So you know about the cool place?"
"I suppose I do."
"Ah. Okay." The cub shuffled his paws a little, his energy quickly starting to fade. "How do you think it glows like that?"
Unsure what he was speaking about, Sanaa looked around. "What do you mean?"
"The place. It glows."
Now she was confused. "The ruins don't glow."
Jel turned to look at her again, his bright eyes seeming to glow a little themselves but with what she wasn't sure. "No, not the ruins. The cool place."
"I thought the ruins were the cool place?"
"No!" She smiled as the child gave a heavy sigh of exasperation. "Ugh. Come on. I'll show you."
She followed him to the ruins but hesitated when he started to lead her down some broken steps. How had they missed this before? The passage was dark with very little light filtering in form above. She listened to his clumsy steps to follow but halted when he did. Now the light was faint just ahead of them. It had to be unnatural. It was hues of pinks, blues, and oranges. She continued forward but came to another halt when she reached a cavern. Lights bounced off the rocks and reflected in what must have been a lake.
"Whoa."
"I told you this place was cool."

S1 : Send your lion off on a treasure hunt! Where does their journey take them, and how do they discover something new and grand? Who sent them, why are they going? What are they hoping to find? (500 word or 1 art piece minimum)The sun had set and the moon gleamed in the young lionesses eyes as she looked out over the dark plains. Her paws kneaded the dirt with its claws. She stepped out a little further, the moon making the pale flakes stand out even more against her violet fur.
"Kesi? What are you doing up?"
The lioness gave a soft sigh before turning to her father. "I'm going out."
Instead of saying anything, he simply raised a brow at her. She knew he'd worry no matter what she did. He always did. Even as a cub. She gave another soft sigh before turning completely to him.
"I want to explore the plains."
"You can't do that during the day?" His brow seemed to only climb higher but he had a smirk growing on his face. He was teasing her.
"I'll be safer at night." His smirk was replaced with a grimace. "Don't worry, I won't be out all night. I'll be home before you know it."
Kibwe heaved a loud sigh with a shake of his head. "Alright. Alright. Just... be careful? I don't want to have to explain to your mother how you got hurt if something happens."
She laughed. "No promises."
"I wonder if Avelin gives Sultra this much trouble." At that she turned around with a shake of her head but a grin on her face. Perhaps the next time she visits with her mother and sister, she'll ask them herself.
Wandering further from her fathers den, she crossed the plains towards the strip of valley that passed between the snowy mountains and the jungle trees. She was still fairly new to the area. Her father kept her and her sister together with their mother until they were considered adults. Didn't want to split the family up. They were given the decision of staying with their mother or move with their father. Avelin wished to learn their mothers trade. Kesi wished to explore and that's what she was going to do. Even in the dim light she could make out faint figures moving about in the grass. The grass was taller over on this end of the valley. Crouching low, she crept forward with her eyes focused on the movement. It was slightly smaller than herself, hunched over like a hyena would be. Her breathing grew a bit shallow at the thought. The pride was often warned about hyenas and the threat they bared to the area. She was in no condition to fight a hyena. Pressing closer to the ground, she kept very still. Hopefully they wouldn't notice her.
There was a shuffling to her right that had her turning her head to identify the source. Another hunched shape. Dark spots could just barely be made out. Spotted hyena. They hadn't noticed her. Yet. The identified creature growled as it approached the smaller one and Kesi could see that the second was larger than the first by a bit.
"N-njeri! I wasn't expecting to see you tonight." The smaller one sounded nervous.
"Ayo."
"W-what can I-I do for you?"
The hyena gave a sigh and shook her head. "All you aardwolves are the same. Mind keeping it down?"
Kesi blinked in thought. Aardwolves? That was certainly new to her. She watched the two continue in hushed tones. She couldn't make out any more of what was being said but didn't want to risk getting caught leaving. Except the risk of getting caught if she stayed was probably about the same. She took a slow steadying breath before deciding that leaving would be the safer bet. Surely they'd catch her scent on the wind sooner rather than later. Better for them to catch it when she was gone. With slow deliberate steps, she backed up far enough that she could no longer make out the shapes. Being a safe distance, she turned to head back to the den and muttered about her findings.
"What's an aardwolf? And what'd the hyenas want with them? How many are there?" Her thoughts were voiced out loud but softly. "Just a mystery to solve later."

S3 : Write about an internal argument/conflict within the pride, whether its an argument amongst pride members, political struggles, or otherwise. What happened as a result? How was it resolved? Was it ever resolved? (500 word minimum)The wind was blowing softly through the mountains, the loose snow swirling gently along the tree trunks every now and then. The lioness shivered slightly in the colder region. How her brothers could stand it was beyond her. They were probably adjusting to it. Was it wrong for her to be here? She didn't want to get her brother in trouble. But she couldn't stay with her parents any more. It was coming up six months since the ceremony that decided her future. To say it hadn't gone the way she wanted, or hoped, was a massive understatement. She didn't think about the risks to go against the kings decision. All she could think about was how unhappy she was sitting around with nothing to do, nothing that allowed her to prove herself or better herself. Closing in on the dens where the smaller pride resided, she could see the lions gathered together in small groups or even just pairs. Kito was seen with a maned lioness; one of the newly appointed knights named Mosiya if she recalled correctly. Kamili was seen talking with a few lions. It looked to be the hunters as she recognized Faraji and Marjani but not the third lion standing close by. Not wanting to intrude, she stood back and waited for her brother to finish his meeting.
"I've talked with Chausiku about your concerns and it's being taken care of. For now, go about hunting as normal. Faraji, I trust you to take the lead in her absence."
"Of course." The large spotted lion nodded which was then accompanied by his fellow hunters before they took their leave. She stepped closer to the lord of the region.
"Jahori. It's nice to see you."
"You as well, brother. Lordship doesn't seem to have gone to your head. Yet."
He chuckled. "You haven't talked to Kito yet, I take it? He'd tell you otherwise."
"Oh, I doubt it. Of all of us, you're the most levelheaded. I'm sure you're a great lord."
"I appreciate your kind words." He smiled brightly at her but the way his tail swished told her he was embarrassed. "So, just wanting to visit?"
"Actually..." She tilted her head, starting to feel a little unsure. "I was wondering if maybe you'd take me in." At that, he gave her a questioning look. "I can't keep sitting in the den doing nothing. I want to do something, be something. Anything."
Kamili heaved a sigh as his shoulders slumped. "Jahori..."
"Come on. There's gotta be something I can do. You need a hunter? You know I'm fast. O-or a knight? I'm not as strong as Kito, but I know i could do it."
"Jahori, I can't."
She stared at him, expressionless.
"I can't go against the kings decision."
"It wasn't his decision! You heard mother the day we were assigned. She had father talk to Imamu to rig my role. You know I'm not useless."
"I didn't say you were, but-"
"But nothing! This is your pride. I'm coming to you. It's your decision now."
"You want me to go behind mother's back?"
"I just want to make something of myself. Give me a rank. You know I'm good for it."
He took a deep breath as if deciding or weighing his options. After a moment, he looked up at her, his face solemn. "I'm sorry, Jahori. I can't. Maybe I can talk with mother about it, get her to change her mind and then-"
"Forget it." She turned to stalk away, hurt and angry. "Thanks for nothing."

"I think I preferred the plains to this." The dark lioness thumped her tail softly against the clovers that littered the ground.
"I don't know. I think the trees are really pretty here. These clovers are cute." Kamaria leaned her head down to get a closer look at the leafy greens. "The trees also had some nice color in the fall."
Atiena looked thoughtful for a moment before nodding her head gently. "I suppose you're right. This region does see a lot of color during the seasons. I saw one of the trees starting to show some nice blossoms. Spring is starting to set in."
The soft gray feline rolled over in the grass, stretching out. "These clovers are soft."
"The grass back home was soft too," Atiena said with a laugh.
"Yeah, but small rocks littered the ground. There aren't any rocks here. I could lay here all day." Kamaria wiggled in the grass a bit more as if settling in. Her sister only shook her head with a smile. They'd just been assigned as hunters to the Kikoa cha Zamani region. Right now, they were just enjoying their time lounging.
"You're so weird."
"What? I like it here."
"Yeah. It is pretty here. Being the new region, it's not overly crowded either. It's nice to have some space."
"I like space too. Though, now that we're out here, we'd have to plan trips to visit mom and dad. Or even visit bibi and babu."
The words were met with a nod. "It was nice being so close to them. I'm sure we'll make frequent plans to visit when we're not working."
"I'm sure it'll get better next year when we get more hunters as well."

Russom had just wandered past the last blades of grass of the Kikoa cha Zamani region. The furthest border of the kingdom to the northeast. Just beyond the trees and soft grass was a sandy desert. Dunes with soft wave like patterns over the slopes. He hadn't been over here. At least not this far. His parents, or more specifically his mother, preferred to keep him closer to home. Being one of the heirs to the pride, it was safer to keep him in the plains. But he was curious. He liked to do his own thing. This particular trip was a spur of the moment thing. He wanted to know what else was out there. He knew there was a pride somewhere out in the sands, but little else. They weren't very susceptible to newcomers.
As he walked along the peak of the sand dunes, he relished the quiet. It was peaceful out here. The sun was warm- warmer than he was used to, but not unpleasant. The sand was a little irritating, harsh and gritty against the pads on his paws. Despite that, he was rather enjoying the desert. He'd have to plan another trip out here. Though he wasn't entirely sure where the border of this other pride was he'd be sure to keep aware of his surroundings. He wouldn't want to start a diplomatic incident. It got him wondering what those lions were like. He only knew what he had been told by his parents. Were they really that bad?

In Character Breeding : 250 WordsPair : Shula and RussomThe desert was exactly how he remembered. The grains rubbed harshly against his paw pads and sun was warm on his back. His last visit hadn't been long and he hadn't strayed too far from his prides borders. Leaving a bit earlier, he had more time to spend out and about and wandered a bit farther than he had on his first trip out here. The young prince still had yet to see anyone though if he was remembering correctly, the neighboring pride shouldn't be too far from his current position. He pressed on over the sand, taking in his surroundings. Not that there was much to see. it was called a desert for a reason.
"What are you doing here?"
Russom turned to see an orange lioness with spots of white and stripes of yellow and red. Her words sounded guarded. At the very least, just as surprised to see him as he was to see her. The prince took a moment to look around, feigning confusion though the hint of a smile was no doubt still noticeable on his face.
"Huh. Odd. I could've sworn my tour guide went this way." His smile widened, hoping to put her at ease and display he wasn't a threat. "Oh, well. I suppose I'll have to find my own way around. I'm Russom." He contemplated adding he was a prince but didn't see much point in it. If it came up, then perhaps he would mention it. "What are you doing here?"

S3 : Write about an internal argument/conflict within the pride, whether its an argument amongst pride members, political struggles, or otherwise. What happened as a result? How was it resolved? Was it ever resolved? (500 word minimum)The hushed hurried tones grabbed the kings attention. The day was growing late and he wasn't expecting company at such an hour. Stepping out of the cave, he could see a small gathering of lions. His trusty adviser Tendaji was speaking with the newest lord Elewisa. The lords sister Sanaa was also present but standing back with a young lion who was shuffling his paws. Jel, if he was remembering correctly. The young boy had been found by the knight Sanaa shortly after they had put some of the pride in the Kikoa cha Zamani region.
"Has there been any damage?"
"No. Nothing bad has happened, but I don't want to risk anything."
Imamu stepped up to the Lord. "What's wrong?"
"It's Jel." The king looked past him at the cub then raised a brow. "He's... manifested some unique abilities."
"Elaborate."
"It would seem he possess magic."
The words were whispered but seemed to be deafening in the silence that followed. Magic. It wasn't unheard of for lions to possess magical abilities. In a way, Nuru held such powers being able to see glimpses of the future. But that was a light example.
"How so?"
"Well..."
Sanaa stepped up though Jel kept his distance for now. "It would seem he has the ability to create fire."
"Fire?" This was concerning. Fire could be very dangerous. It was destructive by nature. No doubt his worry was easily heard in his tone.
"I don't think it's dangerous." The knights confidence did little to settle his nerves.
"Why's that?"
"If I may?" She looked toward the young lion, asking permission to let him show for himself. When the king nodded, she beckoned Jel over then spoke softly to him with a comforting voice. "Show them."
With rapt attention, Imamu watched as the boys violet eyes burned like a purple flame. His paws also glowed with a purple energy. The onlookers took a few steps back as the flames licked up his arms. Reaching a paw out, the fire jumped from his toes to a stone and danced silently.
"You see?" Elewisa spoke up, fear underlying in his tone. "It's dangerous."
The wince Jel gave didn't go unnoticed.
"No it isn't! Don't be afraid of what you don't know." Sanaa stepped up and lifted a paw toward the stone.
"Sanaa, don't-"
She pressed the paw down over the flaming stone with no hesitation earning a gasp from her brother. The king noticed Tendaji showed little reaction. It was strange, but the fire was different than any he'd seen before. Not only because of the color which burned in the same way his eyes did. The flames seemed to move around the knights paw but more noticeably her fur wasn't burned.
"How... what...?"
"I told you. It's not dangerous. It's safe. I'm not hurt. It doesn't even have heat."
"Well.. that's because I'm controlling it."
"What do you mean?"
"I don't want to hurt you. It's an innocent flame. A simple light trick. But... I can make real flames as well. It helped when I was on my own."
Sanaa moved to look at the young lion. "You've had these powers this whole time?"
The flames died out and his eyes stopped burning. "I didn't want to scare you. I tried to keep it to myself."
"It's a risk if we don't know what the full capabilities are." Elewisa spoke up again.
"Perhaps we could have him see Nuru. Perhaps she could gain some insight."
The king nodded in agreement. "A fine proposal, Tendaji. Seek her out. Jel? I don't doubt you mean no harm to us but I'd like for you to visit with our seer. She may be able to help you better comprehend your magic."
